When will we wake up? The bush administration apologists are having to halfclose their eyes in order to avoid seeing. The rest of us are almost as bad as far as letting our alarm be known. On the other hand, I have no idea of how to get the carnage stopped. Any ideas out there?

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.:

"We are living today in a science fiction nightmare, a world where, because somebody gave money to a politician, our children are brought into a world where the air is too poisonous for them to breathe.

"This is a world where, because somebody gave money to a politician, my children and the children of millions of other Americans can no longer enjoy the seminal, primal activities of their youth - which is to go fishing with their father or mother and come home and eat the fish.

"I live two hours south of the Adirondack Mountains. This is the oldest protected wilderness area on the face of the Earth; it's been protected since the 1880s. Today, one-fifth of the lakes in the Adirondacks are sterilized from acid rain which is coming from those same coal-burning power plants, and this president has put the brakes on the statutory requirement that those companies remove the materials that are causing the acid rain.

"I flew recently over the coalfields of the Appalachians. I saw something that if the American people could see there would be a revolution in this country. We are cutting down the mountains, literally cutting them down. The coal companies blow off the tops of the mountains, using 2,500 tons of dynamite in West Virginia alone every year.

Another excerpt:

"Most insidiously, they have installed the worst, most irresponsible polluters in America, and the lobbyists from those companies, as the heads of virtually all the agencies and sub-secretariats and even Cabinet positions that regulate or oversee our environment.

"The head of the Forest Service is a timber industry lobbyist who is probably the most rapacious timber industry lobbyist in American history. The head of public lands is a mining industry lobbyist who believes that public lands are unconstitutional. The head of the Air Division at the EPA is a utility lobbyist who has represented the worst polluters in America for twenty years. The head of Superfund is a woman whose former job was advising companies how to evade Superfund. The second in command of EPA is a Monsanto lobbyist - these are not exceptions, these are the rules across the agencies."

For the Sake of Our Children

The power mongers shot him, Eb. They shot his brother, too. They shot Martin Luther King, and if anyone spoke this clearly and accurately and truthfully on the public stage today they would nullify him one way or another, and if necessary shoot him.

Anyone who wants to remedy the barbarian slide of this civilization is first going to have to fully confront the nature and extent of the barbarism up against which they will be militating. It is too ugly to bear the name of American, but it is cloaked by that name regardless, and it is as ugly as anything bred under Allah's domain, artfully disguised under vast generalizations with glitter on the edges, but a rotten stench in their center -- misguided and distorted versions of patriotism, self-determination, public good and enterprise, thinly layering what is actually greed, self-centered obstinacy, ugly bullying, and an inability to understand multi-dimensional determination.

Why do the lobbyist have so much more power than the people?

When did they come to exist? Isn't their anything in the constitution to protect people from the power they wield over elected officials? It is obvious that they control the politicians and not the will of the people.

When will the Republicans realize that they, too, have been had by greedy power mongers who care nothing for the lives of their children.

Amos, note that is today- this advocate is Robert Kennedy, Junior, a man to keep an eye on; he will be among those who bring us hope. If we are lucky. And if he is lucky. I no longer feel that anyone who is willing to "kick against the pricks" (Shakespeare) is safe.

Amos: are you, by chance, confusing Robert Kennedy, Jr. with is father? RFK, Jr., has been on a environment tear for years. I'm surprised you didn't know that Ebbie. Nothing new in what he said.

"Nothing new in what he said."

Jaysus, Doug, that's the point Ebbie's making. Wake the hell up.
