Subject: Folk at Glastonbury Festival
From: greg stephens
Date: 22 May 05 - 03:53 PM

I am trying to make a bit of a plan to catch some good acts at Glastonbury: I know you never actually get to what you're going to see, because you get waylaid, but it's good to have an aim in life.
Does anyboy know any precise times and stages for folk acts at the festival? I can find listings for some stages, but not actual times.

What a line up - Van the man, Elvis Costello, Coldplay, Paul Brady, Dreadzone, Jools and Glen Tilbrook , Chemical Bros and on and on and on. No wonder you need a time listing. Hope nothing clashes too badly for you!

Which stage for the Oyster Band?
An absolute gem I have discovered is that Biggles Wartime band are on at the Circus Croissant Neuf stage on Sunday at 1PM.(Croisssant Neuf is the very obvious big stripy matquee, up the hill in the Green Field area).
To see Biggles with a Glastonbury audience up the hill with the hippies is one of the unalloyed pleasures of life....totally ridiculous immaculate jugband music, if youve never seen them.Eliza Carthy, and Rory McLeod, are both on at the Avalon stage sometime, but I havent found out when yet.
Glastonbury, I have found over the years, is as good a festival to hear folk as any, both for big names and delightful discoveries. The knack is to find out who is on where(and keep your ears open when wandering aimlessly around).
   Generally speaking

The provisional timings for folk on the bandstand (markets area, just down from the Burrow Hill Cider bus) are:

Thursday, 5pm, Hodmadoddery
Friday, 1.30pm Witches of Elswick
Friday 5pm John Spiers & Jon Boden
Friday 8pm 3 Daft Monkeys
Saturday 1.30pm Jenny Crook & Al Thomas
Saturday 7 pm Hootenanny 3 (featuring Leon Hunt)
Every day 3pm the Demon Barber Roadshow.
Check our blackboards at the beginning of the festival for any changes!

I can also tell you that Leon Hunt & Daily Planet will be performing on the Avalon stage at 3.30pm on Sunday.

All the best,

Kate.

Kate: have you found the Avalon timings on a website?
The Boat Band, by the way, will be on at Croissant Neuf on Friday at 9.30PM, and will feature an array of guests from other Glastonbury bands.

Eddie Barcan (of Cambridge fest fame) is booking the Avalon stage this year, which is why it houses so many folk acts. I believe he was brought in (having been involved in various informal capacities for years) for exactly that purpose - to extend the folk content of the festival.

Whalebone Polly are playing twice - once on the Acoustic stage and once at Crouissant Neuf, but it depends on how strict your definition of "folk" is as to whether you'll enjoy them - I think they're great. Demon Barbers, Oysterband, Eliza Carthy, Rory McCloud and lots of others are on the Avalon stage.

Timings for the smaller stages never seem to be released beforehand, but as soon as you get to the site you can pick up an Observer guide thing in its plastic wallet and get full timings of everything. They hand them out round the JazzWorld stage amongst other places, which is where I nearly always meet up with friends on the Thursday evening.

See you there!

Unfortunately the Demon Barber's will not be appearing on the Avalon stage, they will be appearing daily on the bandstand as I mentioned earlier and also doing a special late night set on the Tadpole stage in the green futures field at 11pm on Saturday night.

Greg -I will indeed pass on your message!

All the best,

Kate.

Just been looking at the Glastonbury website (got to it via The Undertones website).

Most of the running orders for the main stages can be found there, albeit without exact timings.
