Subject: Advertising other people's stuff From: GUEST,muppitz at work Date: 24 May 05 - 11:19 AM Small question. Do folk clubs and such the like have a problem with advertising other people's events even if they don't conflict with their own. A folk club fairly local to me has a table specificly for advertising material for other clubs and/or festivals, however I have heard stories that some people/places who receive advertising for other events will, not refuse as such, but conveniently forget to put it out. Any thoughts? muppitz x |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: Rasener Date: 24 May 05 - 11:28 AM We are all in it together and therefore should support each other as much as possible. All the Lincolnshire Folk Clubs seem to help each other. I don't know of any of them deliberately not putting material out concerning my club. I do the same for them. Can only be good for the Folk world in the long run. |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: Nick Date: 24 May 05 - 11:54 AM If you (or anyone) has anything within reasonable distance of where we are (10 miles north of York - England) by all means PM/send me anything (mudcatATnickblair/co/uk) and I will let our group of people know - even if it conflicts with our Wednesday nights. People are allowed to do what they want after all - attendance is enjoyed rather than expected. |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: GUEST, Jim Hancock Date: 24 May 05 - 12:00 PM As one who both receives and sends this stuff I feel sure its non appearance is not malicious. Every club I know of seems happy to advertise other events. This year more than ever I am aware of the increasing amount of bumff randomly distributed around venues, i'm not surprised that some gets inadvertantly left at home. Add to that the stuff sent direct to venues which sits under the bar for three months before the club organiser receives it and the ones that are sent to organisers who left the club five years ago / moved house / died and the odds on your bumff getting seen are reduced considerably. If you're sending stuff out regularly it's worth an evening or two on the phone every 6 months just to make sure you address book is up to date. After that cross your fingers and hope for the best. All the best Jim Hancock |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: breezy Date: 24 May 05 - 01:23 PM If I want to advertise at a club I usually make a point of going in person and supporting that club, then I feel that I'm not just taking advantage. Likewise if you support my club then I'ld be happy for you to give yours a plug. so Villan if you expect me to give yours a plug then you know what you can do I think its abit cheeky to advertise a club that runs on the same evening, and that can be seen to be in 'competition' so Letchworth, you have been warned, and that goes for Hitchin too!!! Let flyposting wars commence |

Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 25 May 05 - 02:26 PM The only occasion that I have known this be a problem was when a club organiser visited another club and put out a flyer on every seat at the start of the evening without asking. |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: GUEST Date: 25 May 05 - 02:52 PM Its only polite to ask. |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 May 05 - 04:10 PM Pedant alert - Bumf should really only have one F... it's an abbreviation of the Government Office/Military term 'bum fodder' after the fate of most paper in the early days of the services. It can be written as bumph but still only one f. My club never had any trouble advertising others, but there weren't that many in the area to compete with. LTS |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: My guru always said Date: 25 May 05 - 04:14 PM OK Villan, where's the coach going from?? Can it nip down & pick me up from Leatherhead? Surely Ex-St Albans residents qualify? |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: Rasener Date: 25 May 05 - 04:19 PM I will have to talk to me bank manager about that one. I only budgeted a fiver for the whole thing. I have to ask him for another quid. :-) |
Subject: RE: Advertising other people's stuff From: Chris Green Date: 25 May 05 - 06:08 PM On several occasions we've turned up at gigs to find that so-and-so is playing down the road or such-and-such a festival is happening this weekend and consequently the venue is less than full. Luck of the draw, I'm afraid! :-) |
