Beware! There is a terrible new virus going around, Liberal "Twitch" Syndrome. It affects the recipient with extremely violent emotional reactions toward anything perceived as even remotely "liberal". This can include, commonly, things like:

A. Views which: reflect compassion or forgiveness, suggest nonviolence or disarmament or peace talks, suggest that war is not the best way to solve issues, suggest that people should try to get along, recommend a meeting of hearts and minds, etc...

B. Anything that seems to favour or tolerate gays and lesbians.

C. Liking the Democratic Party.

D. Disliking the Republican Party.

E. Sympathizing with Chimpanzee's rights.

F. Suggesting that Ronald Reagan was a poor actor and a worse president.

G. Suggesting that Bill Clinton was not totally evil.

H. Suggesting that socialism is ever justified in any circumstance, even a teeny little bit of it.

When any of the above are detected by the wretched carrier of LTS, he or she bursts into a stream of invective, often accompanied by outbursts of profanity similar to Terret's Syndrom. Ann Coulter, for instance, is a famous LTS carrier. More subtle effects of LTS can prompt lengthy essays sprinkled with a lively and appealing mix of unrelated facts which appear to support the main argument which is that liberals are gutless scum responsible for the breakdown of society. For this, look to individuals such as William F. Buckley or Barbara Amiel.

Carriers of LTS are irresistibly drawn to websites where large numbers of people they perceive as "liberals" may be found. There the LTS sufferer takes up residence and battles daily with the liberals his illness has identified as scum who must be defeated, demolished, and humiliated. He battles them with an unquenchable zeal and hatred.

In so doing, he inevitably comes head to head with sufferers of CTS! Conservative "Twitch" Syndrome, that is...

It works exactly the opposite way, except usually without the profanity. In fact, sufferers of CTS pride themselves on taking the erudite "high road" and looking down their noses at the crude tactics of the LTS sufferer. Each side has utter contempt for the other, and neither one of them will quit until death or exhaustion stops them from further posting.

There is nothing sadder than seeing an LTS victim locked in daily combat with a CTS victim...day after day after day after day...while life slips by!

Oh! The humanity. Something must be done. I recommend frequent viewings of old Star Trek videos to break the chain of compulsive thinking that has these poor wretches in thrall.

I must add .. People afflicted with LTS can't match those with CTS in any heated debate. They always walk away defeated. For some reason CTS suffers have the upper hand when comes to their debating skills. This does not indicate the LTS group are weak, unintelligent or wrong, nor does it mean the LTS group is more intteligent, strong or correct.

I myself recommend watching European Championship Poker.

Little Hawk

How do you dare to use another person's disability or impairment & make light of their neurological disorder all in the name of "trying to be funny to prove a point". In the US Tourette Syndrome (not Terret's Syndrom) affects hundreds of thousand & though it is treatable there is no cure. While I don't care one way or another about your political view point as the father of a Touretter I find your analogy most despicable. Kids live this affliction 24/7 & it's a living nightmare for them to have to contend with the bigotry of others whom look down their noses at a kid that truly is locked in daily combat with this syndrome never mind have to constantly spar with the shallow likes of the unaware that discriminate & perpetuate their hell & think nothing of those who live with this & in doing so continue to make their hell all the harder. Ask yourself if you would've made the same statements of those who are sight or hearing impaired, would you make light of way someone walks who has MS. Please the next time you speak or post, think first so your foot doesn't end up in your mouth.

Barry

Easy, folks. Point well made Barry, if somewhat over-forcefully. After all, Little Hawk was not making fun of Touretters - he used the syndrome only as an analogy. It's like we might say "he stumbled around as if he was blind", without making fun of blind people. But still, I understand your sensitivity, and fair enough for making the point.

You wish. Wouldn't it be wonderful if life was that simple, and everything met your expectations?

Barry - I have plenty of compassion for your child's situation and yours. My joke was in no way intended to ridicule people who suffer from Tourette's Syndrome, it was intended to make fun of people who obsessively-compulsively attack people of an opposing political opinion, and won't stop doing so, and waste a great deal of their lives doing so. The Tourette's reference was simply to help illustrate the behaviour of an "LTS" victim. Period. Is that really so hard to understand? I hope not.

I'm really skinny, Barry. And I'm nearsighted. Do I get infuriated when people talk about skinniness or nearsightedness? No, I do not. I do not even get infuriated when people say that William Shatner is a fat toad with no talent. I only get mildly irritated when people say Bob Dylan can't sing. I recommend not taking EVERYTHING personally, Barry, specially when it was never directed at you or your family in the first place.

LH, I found your original post quite funny - a little clever rant against both sides of extremist behaviour, and as such fair. Perhaps a little too erudite, and therefore obtuse (signs of early onset of CTS?), which led to Barry's misunderstanding it. I know, people should finish reading a text before flying off the handle, rather than see a single word, ignore the context and see red instead. But sensitivity can lead to that sometimes, so cut Barry some slack too.

Anyway, about Dylan's singing.... no, I wont divert the thread any further.

Heh! Yeah, fair enough, El Greko. I'll try to go easy on Barry. I may indeed be suffering the early or partial onset of CTS. I've seen worrisome signs of that from time to time. When I was a newcomer to this forum I was much more vulnerable to the dread virus than I am now, but I have built up a rather good resistance to it more recently.

Knowing DougR helped with that, because although I disagree with about 95% of his politics I have grown to like and respect him as a person regardless. That has happened with quite a few other people here too. Clinton Hammond, for example. I love Clinton Hammond and am a big fan of his, even though I keep hoping someone will "pie" him with a big lemon meringue at one of his music performances.

People who can only extract humor from picking on others reveal themselves as limited in intellect & communication skills. In my opinion, life is too short to waste on deliberate negativity. As it happens, I know Barry personally. He doesn't need me to defend him, but he happens to be an extremely caring person--not by any means pompous or humorless. I'm proud to know him.

Dear Barry,

I am the father of a special needs child. I really DO understand your sensitivity with regard to Little Hawk's comment. However, please think for a sec. Little Hawk is just not the kind of guy to hurt others. He has compassion for people, and I know if he'd thought even for an instant that his words in the first post would have offended anyone who's the parent of a special needs child--well, buddy, he just wouldn't have posted it. It's not in him to be like that.

Years back I came sooo close to smacking a fellow in Safeway upside the head when he asked if my daughter was retarded. He was very close to a nap at that instant. But, when the 'rage' I felt subsided--took about two seconds--I realized he was smiling at her and asking her how she was doing, and she was responding to him. I replied that she was indeed a special needs child and he said words to the effect that she was pretty and he hoped we'd both have a good day, etc. Turns out he was a pretty nice guy. Over the next few years he would stop and talk with my daughter when he saw her in the store, and she got to call him by his first name. What he had said wasn't meant to hurt.

Some people use the word 'retarded' simply because they can think of no other. Most of them are not out to hurt or offend, they truly do not know what else to call special needs children that isn't going to be equally or more offensive, patronising and debasing.

Thanks, Bruce. I truly appreciate that vote of confidence.

Barry, I certainly had no wish to denigrate anyone suffering from Tourette's Syndrome. I was just conjuring up a mental image of a certain form of behaviour to illustrate a completely different subject, that's all.

Martin, the way things are nowadays it almost doesn't matter what you say, it will offend someone. A movie like "A Fish Called Wanda", which is utterly hilarious, could simply not be made now. Too bad. People are trying way too hard to control other people's speech and even their thoughts in order to meet their own special agenda. That is not healthy, in my opinion. It's a form of fascism.

Anyway, if one does get offended by something the best thing to do, I think, is this...take a little time to think about it before flying off the handle. Chances are, you will discover that the other person's intentions were not necessarily quite what you thought they were. Works for me most of the time.

Brucie, what's the matter with "retarded"? My son Hans (now 31) is retarded; "retarded"--slowed up in development. Nothing wrong with that.

Hans could also described as a Down Syndrome person, or trisomy 21, true enough, but that's only one form of retardation.

Nothing wrong with "retarded".    Now, "He's a REE-tard" is a different matter, because there an insult is intended by the deliberate twisting of the word.   And even misusing the expression as a noun, "a retard", without the deliberate mispronunciation, is offensive.

The word is no longer used in education here. I worked in special ed for a number of years and got THAT changed to special needs. The term denotatively may be useful. However, connotatively it has too much charge to it. Opinions may differ.

Brucie:

The expression "special needs" seems almost completely useless to me. Down Syndrome persons have special needs; autistic persons have special needs; persons with attention deficit syndrom have special needs; persons with various degrees and kinds of physical deformity have special needs. For goodness sakes, a kid with an IQ of 180 has special needs!

Wrong, Martin. People only THOUGHT they knew what that meant. Mentally retarded was a term applied to children with 'differences'. Today, many of the areas of difference have been narrowed down so that the teaching and subsequent learning of those individuals can be enhanced. Saying that someone is mentally retarded is as useful to an educator as saying "it doesn't work right" is about your car to a mechanic. I do not need someone telling me I can't handle the truth about my daughter. I live with that truth. If you want to say she has hyperlexia with severe speach/language disorder, that's one thing. If you wish to write her off as being mentally retarded, that's another. One is a helpful diagnosis. The other is an opinion from someone who basically doesn't know anything about the subject.

That is true. And by law in Alberta those children should be receiving special programs also. But under the umbrella of 'special education' they weren't. Under the umbrella of special needs, the newer terminology has helped open a few doors. FYI.

I agree that it was offensive..not intentionally at first...it is the sort of thing most of us can say without really thinking and then go oops when it is pointed out to us. But to then be so rude afterwards...not nice...it is one of the socially more difficult conditions to have, I would believe..perhaps young Mr. Finn can educate us. mg

Well aren't you all big men. Swearing at, and then ridiculing a 15yr old boy just about sums you up.

Barry these morons are a minority. Yes, it would have been educational for the boy to be able to tell us more about the condition, but he was never given the chance. I hope you meet folk who have both tolerance and morals Barry. But you haven't done too well here. Sorry.

"And I find far more victims of CTS here on mudcat than I do of LTS."

Can we find a different accronym please? I'm starting to get paranoid!

LTS

(Besides, my victims are never in a fit state to speak after I've finished 'em....)

Barry and I have sorted things out via PM. I was out of line. And, by not reading the young lad's post thoroughly enough to realize it was him that was posting, being out of line was multiplied to being out of mind.

I would like to repeat here what I said to you, Barry... you, sir, are a gentleman and I am sure your young fellah takes after his father.
