Subject: Folk music in Britain From: GUEST,Alexander Date: 05 Jun 05 - 10:57 PM My friend and I, Americans both, are planning a short tour of Britain this August (2-23). We're not sure where we're going, but we'll probably traverse much of Britain and at least some of Scotland. I love Scottish and English folk music and was wondering where I might go on this trip for some of the best Britain has to offer. My friend's taste in music is quite different, so I'll probably only be able to include a few highlights. I know this question is really quite broad, but such is my situation. Any advice about anyone, anywhere in Britain would be much appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Britain From: GUEST Date: 05 Jun 05 - 11:26 PM There's a folk festival on at Sidmouth in Devon from 29/7/05 - 5/8/05 ("sidmouthfolkweek.co.uk") which has always been one of the best, if not the best in the UK. Don't forgot Ireland as well, if you have the time - but that may need another trip to really do it justice! There's plenty of info available on the internet, try the "mustrad" website for a start. |

Subject: RE: Folk music in Britain From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Jun 05 - 05:55 AM http://web.ukonline.co.uk/martin.nail/regional.htm I think you will find this very useful. It gives the names of clubs all over the regions of England, contact numbers and the rest. Obviously there are things you must see like Shakespeares house in Stratford and Robin Hoods tree and London of course. With this site you can choose clubs round where you are going anyway. Also you should take in one festival.. sidmouth is in Devon which is one of the beautiful parts of England, the south west. Froots is an English folk magazine and they have a list of all the festivals - probably on their website. have a good time! |

Subject: RE: Folk music in Britain From: Mary Humphreys Date: 06 Jun 05 - 02:00 PM You must try Whitby from 20th August for a week- home of a fantastic folk festival, set in the most beautiful surroundings of North Yorkshire. If your friend is into horror stories, it is the place where Dracula landed, so there is plenty for your friend to see and do, while you do the folk scene. Subject: RE: Folk music in Britain From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Jun 05 - 02:08 PM As regards what ....sights or music? you ought to see Stratford and take a trip on the Thames past all the famous London landmarks. Edinburgh is a beautiful city with great art galleries and the weekend of the aug 14th, there is a brilliant arts festival - but it gets crowded, and pricey. Wonderful music all around Edinburgh all that week. Try and get a room in Stirling University they hire out the halls of residence, and that is a beautiful setting round a Loch. |
