Ted, if you read what Max has said, he has managed to get Mudcat almost back to normal, so that most of the missing 6 months of posts have been retrieved, but a day or two has been lost. He still needs to get a few bugs out, but right now, he is catching up on some well-deserved sleep.

Give the guy a break! I think we are very lucky to have got this much back, considering the problem. I'm happy anyway. Whatever we missed on this thread, maybe it's just as well, and if anything is important enough, people can always post again.

Personally, I think the break could be a blessing in disguise, as far as this thread is concerned. It might have given some people a chance to cool down a bit. One can always hope anyway.

Jenny

All the gutter humour about 'plumbing' is gone. Flushed away. Who said what about it being an anal tax return? I recall brucie's thrifty idea of using both sides of the toilet paper. There were a number of others, but they're greywater under the bridge now.

Whats the rest of Mudcat going to do for a "whippin boy" now? (Akenaton)

So early in this thread a good prediction hid in a question.

One cannot but hope this person is gone for good. I cannot understand how anyone can lament his goodbye. Even if I were a conservative as mg claimed to be I would have been embarrassed by the style. I would have blocked his access long ago.

On the other hand, I've never understood the 'take-a-stand' position when it became repetitive. Once or twice it is understandable, but quickly mg has made clear he would never react in a decent way to that approach. Good Mudcatters have lowered sometimes their style and argumentation for a fight with mg. Even if you can win a fight of words with mg in his style would you really want to win such a fight?

The let's-play-with-Martin game has become boring (perhaps even for him). There has been more than one political thread in which mg has been 'invoked' ("soon, Martin will come and tell us..."etc.) before even showing up for the first time. There have been threads in which mg only needed to post a link with a few harmless words and soon some reacted to this link as if mg had already insulted them in that very thread. A reactive anticipation of future abuse which of course invariably did come.

Wolfgang

Oh, Ted - sorry. I'm afraid the tongue in cheek humour escaped me. All I can say is that it's been a long day (it's night time here in Oz).

I guess Shambles WOULD have a field day - heh heh. But maybe we should let sleeping Shambles lie. Shhhh.

I remember some of the toilet humour. I posted something about hearing the flush of a distant toilet - er, or was it the distant sound of a toilet flushing, or something like that.

And someone else said something about plumbing the depths.

Jenny (flushed with embarrassment)

................

Hey you got a pm!

A couple of comments on:

"If PM's are the standard currency of proof of friendship or support I too would be bankcrupt of shared opinion.

There is a practice one could call reverse trollism. I too practiced it many years ago.   You take the opposite position to your own and use the rhetoric to exagerratingly discredit that point of view.

It gets old fast but it is fun in an immature teen age way. Be warned that the current troll in residence is neither conservative or a Jew. "

* I am having more fun than a lot here. Sometimes it is so damn funny!
* You are right. I am not hardly what you would call a conservative.
* You are wrong. I am a practicing reform Jew and about the only thing I do take seriously here is some of the music threads and the anti-semites here.

Hey, you're doing better in the old analyze Martin game than some others. Now, take it easy and lighten up. It's only a BS section in a stupid web forum.

ps. If you respond nicely, you WILL join the ranks of the hundreds just like it. Honestly!

take care.

Interesting, Don. I haven't posted to this thread before, not wanting to tempt fate.

If this past months/year was a ruse, it was a joke that had a life of it's own. The stridency with which some of the insults came through were such that whether real or play-acting, the voice behind them was unhealthy. The schoolyard bully in hyperspace.

I once asked MG why he bothered, and he responded back (PM) that it was all a joke, and a way to stir people up. But who would have the time or interest in such a sustained experiment?

An author I know of once created a persona on a discussion list and kept it going for several months before confessing who he was. There was some alter ego stuff going on, but there was also a chance to offensively yank people's chains without accountablity. He could write it and think "this isn't really me," when of course it was exactly he who was writing that stuff. The alter ego has been quoted in essays since then (this is all American Indian literature stuff, so I won't go into more details or I'd bore the thread stiff). Those posts still come back to bite the original author on occasion, but in the way of computers, unless they were printed out at the time they're probably gone by now.

We can keep our eyes open for a thesis or dissertation by some warped academic in which he describes and analyzes anti-social behavior as forced upon an open society. If it was an experiment, it was in extremely poor taste, and I hope his committee pans the work.

Beyond the above conjecture, I'm glad to see that the individual who called himself "Martin Gibson" is gone, because he was extremely insulting to several of my loved ones. I don't, however, trust that he will stay away. If/when he returns, the form he chooses may be different, but those leopard's spots don't change.

SRS

On the subject of this other slander (boldface lie) against me by Joe Offer...

And then when the trolls attack, they squeal like a stuck pig. Jack does it, CarolC does it, Ron Davies does it, and so does dianavan - and many others.

I have only ever requested TWO attacks against me be deleted (in five years of posting to the Mudcat). I did so after Joe announced his policy of 100 percent review of "Martin Gibson's" posts. On both occassions, I did it for one reason, and one reason only... to find out if the 100 percent review was going to appy to "Martin's" personal attacks against me.

Joe Offer, in posting this accusation to the open forum has breached an important bit of Mudcat ettiquette, because in doing so, he has discussed the contents of Personal Messages and private e-mails in the open forum (and he gave the names of the people whose messages he was discussing). The only way to refute his accusations is to post the exact contents of one of the PMs I sent him in order to request deletion of a personal attack. This is the kind of language Joe has described as "squeal(ing) like a stuck pig"...

This is the first of the two, sent on 19 Apr 2005 01:32 PM:

Hi Joe,

I respectfully request that this post of Martin Gibson's be deleted. Or at least the parts of it that refer to me...

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=80337&messages=99&page=1&desc=yes#1465466

Here's a link to that message, #1465466 (click). I can't figure out how it insults anybody.
And the complaints I've heard in this thread about my failure to delete that message, sure sound to me like the squeal of a stuck pig.
    -Joe Offer-

Later....
Well, it appears that the crash did change the message numbers, so it's possible that message #146566 originally referred to a message from Martin Gibson. Whatever the case, it's unlikely that I would have any reason to refuse to delete a message if it was indeed offensive. I deleted dozens of Martin's messages. Why would I refuse or intentionally neglect to delete that one in particular? I have to say that I don't remember Carol's request at all.
    -Joe Offer-

One bad apple spoils the whole box eventually. He was allowed and often encouraged to rule the roost. Those scared of becoming his next victims hung on his every word. Dianavan summed it up.

The clone(s) who had a delete fest a couple of weeks back, sure found the time to delete criticisms against him. And regardless of how many times they tell you those posts were offensive...they were not.

He either was a clone or was admired by one. Funny they never found the time to delete his many hundreds of offensive postings. Either way a few , a very few members, lost a lot of credibility.

And LH your inane ramblings are an insult to those he derided. He overstepped the mark big time, unless you also enjoy seeing women, children and disabled folk insulted. Don't answer that please, I haven't the time for your views. I find them twisted.

I posted that about 500 posts ago . I can't be the only one who has known for months it was LH? By the time he wrote his recent 'Liberal Twitch' thread, where he took the p**s out of a 15 yr old boy with a speech impediment, LH had lost the plot so much he was writing as MG, but using LH as the name. I pointed that out to him on that thread and got called the predictable (never had much of an imagination eh?) troll guest, but by then it was transparent who MG was.

It was always going to be someone who never had kids, nobody with them could wish another persons child dead, it was also someone who had issues with females, and a good idea about those he targetted, a passable knowledge of judaism and a chicago fixation, plus someone who was probably bullied as a kid.

LH ticked all those boxes. But his dogmatic belief in his own beliefs as LH swung it for me, the same dogmatic stance MG took in his opinions. Everyone else was always wrong and he was always right, regardless of which personna he was using at the time.

I am sorry for all those he hurt too, it made a pretty good detective mystery for a very short space of time. But if I knew him, like some of you did, I would be upset understandably. Donuel's post stating it was LH has been deleted, maybe he requested it to be.

The consolation is he must be a very unhappy indivdual to get his kicks like that. Hope the meds kick in and he finds another purpose in life. But for everytime LH called me a troll guest for pointing out his resemblance to MG, he can well and truely swivel.

Joe Offer,

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I think you should entertain the possibility that the link you provided re CarolC's post of June 15 at 11:50 AM may no longer be linking to the thread to which she originally referred. Since the big crash, the database is, to put it it bluntly, fucked. Posts within threads were restored out of sequence. Just open this thread at the first post. A post by JennyO at 6:52 AM on June 11 is now showing as the initial post to this thread, not MG's post of 7:50 PM, June 10. I've come across similar things in other threads. Some are bad enough that it's impossible to follow the sequence of the thread at all. If there's jumbling in one database field, there's probably jumbling in others.

I take it that LH is Little Hawk, and MG in the post above is Martin Gibson. I checked Martin's posts many, many times. In the last six months, I have spent far more time on the posts of Martin Gibson than I have spent on all other objectionable posts combined in the nine years I have been here at Mudcat. As far as I can determine, he always posted under the name of Martin Gibson. I think there was a time or two when Mudcatter logged out and posted as "Guest, Martin Gibson" - but in those cases, it was pretty obvious that somebody was posting pseudonymously to poke fun at Martin. But, in the thousands of messages posted by Mudcat Member Martin Gibson, it was that individual and nobody else.

There was no impersonation in the "Martin Gibson Affair," and it's unfair to attempt to accuse any regular Mudcatter of posing as Martin Gibson.

But Martin Gibson was prolific. He often posted more than thirty messages in a day. Keeping up with him was a real chore.

If your wife or mother or children had been called "cunts" you would care too. And we would be complaining just as loud. If it had happened to Joe Offer or Max I can promise you these posts would have been deleated. But they were not. But since it "only" happened to someone you and Joe don't like we're just supposed to forget about it ??

There is something rotten at the Mudcat. And let me guess - we should just go away and start our own forums - right ?

Hah! I missed Donuel's now-lost post on the supposed LH-MG connection, but I read discussions about the possibilty here and on Jon Freeman's forum. And as intriguing a possibility as it is, I'd have a hard time believing that he was he. Although LH is probably one of the handful of Mudcatters who, if he applied himself, could conceivably pull off a convincing alternate persona for years (that doesn't sound like a compliment, but it is)... Nah, I just don't think so.

But, hey, go ahead and believe it. Then, at least I'm not MG anymore. >:)

Sidestepping the poop for a moment, there is a kind of profiling that can be done on language to establish connections between one virtual persona and another based on the assertation that it's almost impossible to disguise your word pattern over a long passage. It's quite accurate if you have sufficient input.

OK, as you were.

Well it does. We can't help it if you're an insensitive pig. So shut the fuck up and leave us alone.

But hey - it's OK to say that because this is "such an ephmeral and meaningless medium as an internet message board... "
