Happy Birthday!

John McCormack

was born in Athlone on June 14th 1884
(d9/16/1945).

He won a gold medal in the Tenor Competition in Dublin in 1902 and made his operatic debut in 1907 at Covent Garden, the youngest principal tenor ever to sing at there. He made over 500 recordings and was regarded as the greatest tenor of his day. It is said he did more than any other singer before or since to popularize Irish songs. His recordings are still played regularly on radio. [thanx Fiolar at Mudcat, 16 Sep 02 & also AMG]

        Oh, well__ I remember
When the milking time was past and gone,
        We strolled into the meadow,
Where she swore I was the only one
        That ever she could love,
But ah! That false and cruel one,
For all o' that she's gone
And left me here for to die!

                "Molly Brannigan"
