Happy Birthday!

Admiral Richard Grenville

born 6/15/1540 (d1591)

[The guy that carried the 100 English colonists to Roanoke Island
in 1585 - the ones that disappeared. Did some other stuff, too.]

If Jason of that mind had been,
The Grecians when they came to Troy
Had never so the Trojans foiled,
Nor never put them to such annoy:
Wherefore who lust may live at home,
To purchase fame I will go roam.

                "Sir Richard Grenville's Farewell,"
Oxford Book of Sea Songs, Palmer

I thought he was most notable for his desperate fight against the Spanish ships. Al Stewart even wrote a song about him.
