Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Amos Date: 30 Jul 05 - 04:39 PM Bruce: I had this CD rolling over and over on my iTunes this sunny Saturday. I told my wife the guy who sounds a little like Dylan on my computer was my Mudcat buddy Bruce Murdoch. She wasn't impressed with my name dropping, but she wandered over to have a listen and caught the last half of Snowden. Her remarks: "My god--that guy is so much better than Dylan, it isn't funny!! It's an insult to compare him to Dylan!! What a goddam shame Joanie didn't fall in love with HIM!!!" Other than concurring happily, deponent further sayeth not! :D A |

Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 30 Jul 05 - 07:24 PM I am very flattered (and humbled) by these kind words. However, Dylan IS the man. I could never come close to his eloquence with imagery, metaphors, similes. I strive to do so, but I ain't there--yet. (A song I finished lately comes really close. To quote Paul Newman in the movie 'Hombre', "That's to find out.") Dylan was my inspiration to become a song writer, and while I know that occasionally people find his voice and vocalization a little hard to take, a better singer has seldom come down the pike. I hope to meet you and your missus someday, Amos. Please ask her not to get her hearing checked until after I leave. LOL. Besides, you promised me we'd co-author a few songs, and that is something I'm looking forward to very much. '. . . What a goddam shame Joanie didn't fall in love with HIM!!!"' Thank Mrs Amos for me. If I ever have occasion to meet Ms Baez I will quote those exact words. Hey, I look like I'm 80, but the cold weather up here gives us a long usefulness. Hell, we are frozen for half our lives, so reality I'm barely approaching the tender age of 40. Just a kid, really. Thank you all for the encouragement and kindness. I think maybe this thread has run its course and served its purpose, so if it's not too much trouble, could someone please close it? Thank you very much. BM PS Thanks, Freda. |

Had time to listen to the whole album in my truck and I am grateful for your kind gift. I found it eminently listenable and a bit reminiscent of the era from which it dates. Keep me in mind if I can render you some digitizing service in the future. I can offer acceptable quality, protection of the source material, and relatively fast turn around. And, of course, the price will be right! Robo |

Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 12:57 AM ROUGH NIGHT IN JERICHO From the seaport down to this dirty town, skyline's lost its glow; I beat my feet to the city streets and man I'm up to here with snow. You can't subtract all the friends you've been from the friends that you do not know; Take a message to Joshua: rough night in Jericho, baby, rough night in Jericho. The Bible didn't save me man I did it mostly for myself; Salvation's not the kind of thing you ought to leave for someone else. You can't divide all the things you've seen by the things you cannot show; Take a message to Joshua: rough night in Jericho, baby, rough night in Jericho. Take a message to Rahab, tell her to show; Take a message to Joshua: rough night in Jericho. From the seaport down to this dirty town, Skyline's lost its glow; I beat my feet to the city streets and man I'm up to here with snow. You can't divide all the things you've been by the things you do not know; Take a message to Joshua: rough night in Jericho, baby, rough night in Jericho. Take a message to Rahab, tell her to show; Take a message to Joshua: rough night in Jericho. *********************************** MAXIMELIENNE Maximelienne, the sunset sings, tired ladies go; Restless down the streets of dreams that only prophets know. Max, you know I've heard it said that only children see; Grown-ups like to laugh sometimes, but then how else could it be, Maximelienne. Maximelienne, the morning shines like a million sheets of gold; And I haven't got the words that the poets never told. *********************************** DOWN ON MAMA Bruce Murdoch Wake up in the mornin', gotta go somewhere; Starting with a daydream, and it ended with a prayer. And when I go down on mama, she pick me back up again; Mama, pick me back up again. Sometimes she get me growlin', she make me all mean inside; Then she gets this reaction, the kind that I can't hide. And when I go down on mama, she pick me back up again; Yes indeed, Mama, she pick me back up again. I'm coming home from the tavern, my condition is not pure; Mama found the places that regulate my temperature. And when I go down on mama, she pick me back up again; Mama, she pick me back up again. ****************************************** (CAN I) COME ACROSS TO YOU 1. It's hard to talk when you know someone, baby, and I do; It's hard to come across but when I can, come across to you. Me who's passed through countless hands, I've been that way before; I don't want it anymore, Can I come across to you? Can I come across to you? 2. I'm using space to keep my temperature down, not to get upset; Though I know that's like a hurricane, acting nondescript. On a bankrupt stagecoach line, the line and I are left with these thoughts we can't express. Can I come across to you? Can I come across to you? 3. Your lips are priceless, there's no diamonds worth, the gates of patient prose; It was you who got the door unlocked, when my heart was froze. Jack and ace, they embrace this place, I've got nothing to demand, I'm simply offering my hand. Can I come across to you? Can I come across, can I come across to you? ************************************** |

Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 01:08 AM MORNING PAPERS Bruce Murdoch Take away my morning papers, baby; Take away my radio. Confiscate my information, maybe; Bust me for oregano. You can take away anything that you want to take; You know what I'm talking of. But don't take away my love. Meet me at the corner pool parlor; I'll introduce you to a friend of mine. Hanging out at the local racetrack; Keep us out of jail sometime. You can have anything that you want to have; Do it on my living room rug. But don't take away my love. I used to walk like a man quite freely; Then I found my life in chains. Hooked up to this patient woman; She put me back on the track again. You can have anything that you want to have; I could pass it off with a shrug. Don't take away my love. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 01:10 AM IF I HAD WINGS Like the sound of a poem on the pages of time; Made love to your voice on a telephone line. If your eyes would send a smile, I'd take the songs I sing; And make the mountains ring if I had you, if I had wings. In between the rains and the seasons they send; No pain that a word from you couldn't mend. I would gladly trade away the winter winds that swing; Through all the rites of spring if I had you, if I had wings. Yesterday the sidewalks froze, city fell behind; Fortunately people keep the things that they hold precious in their minds. Built-in rhyme when you talk and the way that you move; Ya oughta know by now that I've got it for you, I would wander through this world richer than a king, With a million gifts to bring if I had you, if I had wings. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 01:12 AM AND THROUGH THE RAIN Your mother she's tired; Now she resents her chains. Features are iron; You know they won't remain. Stormy her eyes get like the sky Before it tries to turn to rain. Your brother and you Both know she can't be blamed. Told her you knew; She started to scream again. Ain't hard to tell she isn't well; It must be hell to go insane. I tried and it doesn't do to Show her that you both you Go through Her pain. I know you must feel Justice can't stay the same. Justice must feel Mother has got to change. Hope that the dawn will soon be gone And rest along the shore in flame. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 01:14 AM SNOWDON The clock's breaking midnight, it might rain, the sky looks in doubt; I feel like I'm uselessly following cracks in the floor, All lost on the high range and Gagnier just showed me the door, And Linda, I owe you a song, 'cause you taught me about Yes Linda, I owe you a song, 'cause you taught me about I'm sitting here counting the things that I can't live without; And I feel like a kid with a crush on a girl he don't know, Like you said in your poems, there's some things too hard to let go, And Linda, I owe you a song, 'cause you taught me about Yes Linda, I owe you a song, 'cause you taught me about Linda, I know what I'm trying to say; And maybe I should. But getting it said with these words in the way; Aw c'mon now, I don't talk that good. We've both got a shyness that's almost religion devout; And that's all that stopped me from asking to see you again, Aside from a feeling of nothing to offer, but then, Why Linda, I owe you a song, 'cause you taught me about Yes Linda, I owed you a song, 'cause you taught me about |
Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 01:16 AM COUNTRY 'TIS OF THEE This is the place I live, this is the place I be; I don't respect the politics of ancient history. Honey, I just try to tell it true. I often walk around here, I cannot find my place; Pirates raped my lover and they slashed her in the face. Just give me words that I might write for you, Country 'tis of thee, country 'tis of thee. It is not true that languages do not get along; They're written down, they're spoken of and sometimes put in songs. I'm just trying to tell it true. I count the blessing that daily that the air I breathe is free; But between assault and battery you'll be brought to your knees. Just give me words that I might sing for you, Country 'tis of thee, country 'tis of thee. Patriots shout promises and fools salute a flag; While the country which it represents is torn apart like rags. It's not just done in fact, it's done in deed. Rich man left you helpless with his bank account intact; Poor folks never had it can't ask us to put it back, Hurts me deep inside to see you bleed My country 'tis of thee, country 'tis of thee. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 31 Jul 05 - 10:12 AM I got to hear Bruce Murdoch perform often in the days when these songs were new. I've always love these songs and practically wore out my copy of the original LP. So I'm very happy to have a CD copy now. Bruce was a very special performer; and a great friend. I've really missed seeing him, and hearing new songs from him, over the past 25 years. Coincidental to seeing this thread, I spent the day yesterday at Branches & Roots, a very small and very nice folk festival in Ormstown, a village about 40 miles southwest of Montreal. Among the performers was Chris Crilly, who played the keyboards and violin on Bruce's album. Chris lived around the corner from me for many years, but now lives out in the country near Ormstown and I hadn't seen him in several years. Penny Lang, who sings "Can I Come Across to You," was there too. Mike Regenstreif |

Subject: RE: BS: Re Promised CDs from brucie From: Peace Date: 31 Jul 05 - 12:41 PM Thank you, all. Mike, a special thanks to you. There are few people in the music 'business' whom I trust completely. You are one I do. My intent is to do another CD of new material. What I promise is that you will have the first copy available. You haven't said how much I owe you for the various club gigs, nothing about the times I was down and you gave me work to make sure I could keep on keepin' on. But then you wouldn't. You always were a class act, and IMO you are one of three people (Gary Eisenkraft, Chuck Baker and you) who ensured that the City of Montreal actually had a folk scene. It was you guys who opened clubs and set up concerts and brought in Paul Jeremiah, Jerry Jeff, Dave van Ronk, Sonny and Brownie (and many, many more), and it was you guys who gave a music home to people like Winchester, Lang and so many other musicians and songwriters. That city's debt to you--and my personal debt to you--hasn't been forgotten by me, Mike. It never will. Chris is a wonderful guy. He is a classically trained pianist and a fiddle player. When he did the stuff on that album he ended up playing rock and roll piano and violin. You will never know the chuckles I have had about that over the years. He took it in stride. I didn't hear the violin work until the album came to me in the mail. It's his work on 'Fool Like Me' that makes the song. I have every intention of getting to Ormstown next year. Beer has suggested I might do some stuff, and I am really taken by his kindness. I hope it provides an opportunity for you and me to park it for a while and shoot the breeze. You have always been a wonderful friend to me, Mike, sometimes a better friend than I deserved, and I want you to know that. Keep well buddy. BM |
