I have learned it with 'krähet', but both versions make sense and I have no idea what came originally at that place.

Reminded me of the words to the 18c. chorale prelude by Johann Krebs, "Wachet auf!" Also the title for a chorale by J. S. Bach.

The choral is: Wachet auf! ruft uns die Stimme des Wächters sehr hoch von der Zinne ... = Wake up! the guard cries from the pinnacle high above; wake up, wake up, Jerusalem and so on.

There's a small error in the translation of the last line. It should say "its golden course," not "Your."

In German the word for your (formal) and her are spelled the same. The sun, being feminine, gets "ihr" for its.

I wish I could find the tune so I could hear the harmonies of this round, but I didn't have any luck.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the link to the Musica Viva site, Guest. I used the PDF file to add this round to my repertoire.

It is interesting that the PDF and MIDI files on this page are somewhat different. I decided to play it one way the first time and the other way on the repeat.

Wilfred, I think you are right about "krahte." I think "krahet" sounds better - that puts the whole song in the present tense. (Please note that there are invisible umlauts on both those words.)

Wait a minute - "betritt" is present tense, isn't it?

Since there are three notes available for "goldene" why bother with the awkward "goldne"?
