Baltimore, in South Munster, was sacked by Algerian pirates on 6/20/1631 & most of the citizens enslaved.

        Then flung the youth his naked hand against the shearing sword;
        Then sprung the mother on the brand with which her son was gored;
        Then sunk the grandsire on the floor, his grand-babes clutching wild;
        Then fled the maiden moaning faint, and nestled with the child:
        But see yon pirate strangled lies, and crushed with splashing heel,
        While o'er him in an Irish hand there sweeps his Syrian steel--

                "The Sack of Baltimore," Irish Minstrelsy, p184;
                H. Halliday Sparling; 1899 & Irish Songs of the Sea,
                James N. Healy, 1967

Baltimore is peaceful nowadays, except on Saturday nights, and is the place to catch the ferry to Cape Clear Island. 'Most' of the inhabitants was probably never a very large number, which of course doesn't make it any less horrible.

Years ago I watched a small dog chase a cat there, up and down the quay, on and off the boats. When the dog eventually caught the cat, well, I won't say too much about what happened, except that I've never seen a cat look so surprised, and the good Catholic parents passing by trying to shield the eyes of all six daughters simultaneously.
