Since I've recently been mucking around with recording Skype calls on line with programs like Pamela, I wanted to put in a good word for Audacity, as well.

The quality of stuff available just keeps getting better and better!

Often when a new thread on a regular topic turns up one of the Mudcat "clones" will add links at the top of the page to the redundant threads. If this happens, you will find a lot more discussion by following those links. Otherwise, do as Guest suggested and search the forum on this topic. There are some great links and reviews, but since we've written so many of them over the years, it gets old looking for them and reposting them. If you find some information you'd like to ask more about, make a link to the page (see the "Make a link ("blue clicky") thing at the bottom of the page) and make the connection. This is a favorite Mudcat topic and we always like to learn about upgrades.

Audacity

- free
- versions for all platforms
- reads and creates WAV or MP3 (and other formats)
- noise removal works a treat on tape hiss

Many mudcatters use different ones, some free, some expensive.
here have been numerous threads asking simlar questions, often with titles such as "Transferreing ?? To CD". It is worth checking back because a lot has been previously discussed. (put a simple search term such as "recording" into the FILTER box, just above the threads, and set it to 3 years, then click REFRESH.
Many programmes will do the digital recording you need, but if you are recording from tape or vinyl records you will get unwanted backround noise (Tape Hiss or Pops and Scratches). For a CD you would usually wish to remove these.
Some recording programmes are designed to filter out specific types of background noise, others just record EVERYTHING and you then have to use a second programme to take out the tape hiss or crackles.
Certain programmes will recors your stuff and also burn it to CD or convert to MP3.
A lot depends on what you specifically require and in some cases how much cash you want to shell out.

I like Cool Edit Pro. You can come straight out of the rec out on your amp into the line in on the sound card. Open a new file and record your track then save it as a PCM WAV. to finish off (I think the newer CoolEdit) does this, I use an old version of CD Creator it works fins and I have an old P166 which is set up for just this and saves me throwing out a perfectly good old computer. A good sound card helps.

Can anyone suggest a sound recording software program? I want to copy many cassettes of our band's ethnic music onto my computer (Windows XP Pro) for eventual compilation onto CDs. I'm seeking advice about which programs are easy to use, not too costly, and do the job well.
