Subject: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Bunnahabhain Date: 22 Jun 05 - 09:17 AM Can anyone explain how to wolf whistle? I just found out I'm supposed to be wolf whistling on stage next week, and it would therefore be helpful if I could... |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 Jun 05 - 09:30 AM Whistling - Start low, rise an octave with a swoop, drop straight back down to the low note and rise back up to the octave, dropping down through the octave. You can stretch the second note out if you like. The pattern you're aiming for is sort of this: _/ _/) LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: *daylia* Date: 22 Jun 05 - 09:31 AM Sure - first, imagine Pamela Anderson leaning over you, in a bikini. Wait for your hormones to kick in (shouldn't take too long) - this will add a bit of oooomph to your whistle. Then, pucker your lips and blow - first time with an ascending glissando, the second time descending. As in "Wheeeeet Wheeeew!!" Here's a dictionary definition, just in case WARNING: use this whistle with great care! My dad wolf-whistled at a lovely lady on the sidewalk once, when he had the car full of us kids (and my Mom not around of course). She ignored him, so he tried again - beeped the horn approvingly instead. Well, the horn stuck! IT was deafening!! He had to pull over right behind her, open the hood and try to fix the thing with the whole neighbourhood watching and all us kids rolling around on the sidewalk in stitches .... |

You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and ... blow." |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 22 Jun 05 - 05:31 PM I can do that whistle through my fingers louder than anyone I've ever met. I can teach anyone to do it in four hours, but I've never had a singele person try to learn. |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Bill D Date: 22 Jun 05 - 07:23 PM ...you've been teaching it to married people? *tsk!* |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 22 Jun 05 - 07:32 PM I used to embarrass my children in large crowds; it was a way to locate them. I also used to call them to supper in the evening when they were playing down the street. One year, a mockingbird started mocking me. Actually, I never "taught" anyone - I just know it took me four hours of practice to perfect it. |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: dianavan Date: 22 Jun 05 - 08:39 PM Mary in Kentucky - How many fingers do you put in your mouth? Do you use one or two hands? I use two fingers on each hand. I have the loudest whistle I've ever heard. I wish we could have a contest. |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 22 Jun 05 - 08:44 PM You're on! As Sorcha says, "Step outside!" I use the pinkie and forefinger of my right hand. When I learned, I practiced with two hands, forefingers of each hand, just under the tip of my tongue. It took four hours to get a consistent sound. Now I can whistle with no fingers in my mouth, but it's not as loud and shrill. |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Fergie Date: 22 Jun 05 - 09:37 PM My mother is 84 and she uses her index fingers, she sticks them into her mouth and she can whistle so loud it makes your ears ring. I have never manage it get it right Fergus |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: dianavan Date: 23 Jun 05 - 02:17 AM My whistle is special. Its really, really difficult to master. You use the index finger and the middle finger on each hand. You roll your tongue in half, backwards and press down with your fingers. Cover your teeth with your lips and blow. I wonder what Guiness has to say about whistles. There must be a world competition or something. Maybe I shouldn't be giving away my secrets. |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 23 Jun 05 - 03:00 AM From many "pecussion shops" you may purchase a round-tube-type device. One inch diameter - perhaps 1.5 in length. Inside is a spinning wheel.
Place it inside your fist and BLOW - (twice) awsome - eartwitching 1950's sound. Much louder and reliable than the fingers-lips-lungs.
Sincerely, |

Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Jun 05 - 12:03 PM What memories you bring back! My father used to call us in from play with a loud clear whistle such as Mary in Kentucky describes. It's fine outdoors, but I hate it when people do that near me at a concert. Hurts like hell. |
Subject: RE: BS: HELP! Anyone know how to wolf whistle?! From: Lighter Date: 23 Jun 05 - 12:32 PM As a historical note, I have never witnessed an actual person giving a wolf whistle, or heard of it happening. Not to say it doesn't ! But nowadays such situations are less common due to political correctness (entirely appropriate in this case, if you ask me). On the occasions when I *have* seen this level of attention-getting from the sidelines, it was entirely verbal: "Hey, where ya goin', baby?" "Hey, chiquita ! / mamacita ! Que pasa ?" "Hey, I think I'm in love !" etc. I associate the wolf whistle with the '40s and '50s. |
