We were out looking at guitars today and I noticed that the shop had a Gibson prototype, #9 out of 10. What exactly does this mean? Does anyone know? Does it increase the value of the instrument or decrease it or not mean squat?

That means it was one of a very limited number of guitars made to a new design. If it was, say, a J-50 prototype, it might be worth a wad -- or not. If it was a model that never went into production, it might be even more -- or not. It might even have a "history," as some prototypes are loaned to well-known players for evaluation. Only someone knowledgable about collectable instruments would be able to say. It might be worthless as a playing instrument and still monetarily valuable, or the other way around. It's a funny business.
But it's a cool find no matter what the value. Did you get to play it? What was it like?

Apologies, Michelle, that last one was me -- my cookie's gone missing.

It's a Gibson Blues King....sounds FANTASTIC....leaps and bounds above the other Taylors and ssuch that were in the shop. The sound was clear with just the right resonance......of course once we played it, chances were slim to none that it was going to stay in tha tstore. It is prototype 9/10...plays like a dream.
