Another song form the Irish songs from old New England CD. It is my transcription and with the exception of the start of the third verse (nothing but a weak attempt at transliteration) I should be close to what is actually sung. I'd appreciate someone making sense of the first line of verse three.

Wolfgang

BARNEY McGEE

On the streets of the town as I walk up and down
There was one thing that I'm sure to see
Though they tell me beware he is sure to be there
By my side making sheep's eyes at me

Chorus: Oh Barney McGee making sheep's eyes at me
At church or wherever I be
he's a nuisance but still I (do) feel such a thrill
when Barney makes sheep's eyes at me

When I go to the fair I find him waiting there
Standing there like a prince bold and free
He is aft for my hand like the knight bold and grand
And he still makes those sheep's eyes at me

(I can not up at sigh) for his love he may die
Just think of how sad I will be
For I'd seek in my dreams all my days so it seems
My love making sheep's eyes at me

So I'll tell him tonight when the moon shining bright
I decided his bride for to be
For I cannot say no could be wrong to do so
When Barney makes sheep's eyes at me.

I don't know the song, but could it be:"I can not help but sigh"?

Snuffy,

thanks, the 'but' sounds like a very good idea, however, I still can't hear a 'help' there (though it would make sense).

No "help" needed! It scans fine as "I cannot but sigh .."?
The rest of the line might well be " ...for is love IT may die".

Regards

p.s the song reminds me of something..... but I´m a long way from home and can´t check.

Bah! "..for HIS love it may die", of course.

It makes sense this way though it's not what I hear. I think I'll have to settle for that. One day, I'll wake up and I'll know without doubt what is actually sung. Well, I could PM Dan Milner or Sandy Paton (his wife is the singer on that CD) but that feels like cheating.
