When I was in High School I bought a bunch of LP's from the cut out records bin at The Family Bargain Center, $ .39 each. Among them was The Corrie Folk Trio And Paddie Bell and The Corrie Folk Trio And Paddie Bell, The Promise of The Day on Electra Records (Bill Smith, Roy Williamson, Ronnie Browne, and Paddie Bell). I remember being captivated by Bothwell Castle and Lock The Door Lariston. This was my intro to Scottish music, a place I have felt welcome for many years.

I did a performance at the Black Bitch in Linlithgow in August 1990. My last song was Flower of Scotland. Not a dry eye in the house, not one.

One of the things on my bucket list has been to stand on Ben Nevis and sing Flower of Scotland, but I'll never be able to do it.
Damn.

Listened to three Corries CDs today on a long drive; didn't even know it was Roy's birthday. What an incredible influence he had on an awful lot of people. So much joy, sorrow, history and imagination wrapped up in the music he and Ronnie gave to us. I raise a glass to you, Roy.

I remember his daughter's remembrance of him as "A big comfy armchair"...what more could a man want?

A Few years have rolled since Roy Williamson left us and was last remembered here. But the man with the enchanting voice and the "educated fingers,"" who led so many people to fall in love with Scottish music is always worth remembering. So happy birthday, Roy, wherever you are.

i didn't realise that was his birthday, the day after the battle of Bannockburn, I was I Australia when I heard that he died, so two of my hereos died that year 1990, Roy and my mother.

Corrie (kôr'y, kör'y) noun: A round hollow in a hillside; a cirque. [Scottish Gaelic coire, hollow, cauldron, from Old Irish, cauldron, whirlpool.] But I first met Roy at Blairgowrie Festival in 1967 when, although I was fairly new in Scotland, I had several drinks taken. In a large sleeping tent in the camp ground, John MacKennon (as I recall) introduced us and then said, "Roy's a Corrie." "What's that?" asked I. Said Roy, "It's a kind of garbage collector." Then we talked about folk music. He was good at it when he wasn't Corrieing.
