Not sure if any of the existing threads would be the place for this, so let me start another....

Some quotes from "Earthlings Go Home!" by Mack Reynolds

"The Moslems take over the chapel on Friday, the Hebrews on Saturday, the Christians on Sunday, the Buddhists on Tuesday and the agnostics go to hell in their own way, all week long." (Talking about the YMCHMZBRAA)

About Martian religion:

"Instead of worshipping their gods, they sort of ignore them. They adopt a sort of hurt, reproachful attitude toward divinity. Kind of a why-did-you-have-to-do-this-to-us approach. They work on the theory that if the gods had to get onto this creating kick, they could have done it better."

There's always room for another religion thread. Can't get enough of them. I'm fascinated by any concept that can continue for any unreasonable length of time, steadfastedly refusing to submit to all efforts made by the finest of Mudcat minds to confirm or deny it.
Call it religion if you will. Call it scientific method if you won't.

I like the Martian stance BTW, but I think it would be even more attractive if it involved an aspect of wry anticipation as to what the gods are going to reveal or expect the Martians to take on board next.

A quote from Karen Armstrong:
There are some people, I suspect who would feel obscurely cheated if, when they arrived in heaven, they found everybody else there as well....Heaven would not be heaven unless those who reached it could peer over the celestial parapets and watch other unfortunates roasting below.
I can hardly wait to see the look on the faces of those people.

Why is it that we translate heaven in such materialistic terms, with faces, musical instruments, gates, clouds, gowns and slippers, and even bird-like wings? How could anyone seriously design a gathering place for souls -- which have none of these things -- and model it after some Medieval boarding school? Why?

For that matter, what's with his portrayal of Jehovah -- presumably the Infinite Spirit that moves on the Unformed Potential of all-that-is....and brings cosmos and all things into being -- as some beefy middle-aged dude with a beard and a bad attitude. What is UP wid dat?

This sort of fixation of material forms gives religion a bad name.

I no more expect to see flying body-shapes in gowns when I die than I expect to see characters with faces like elephants and six arms each! Really, it's risible!

I have it on good authority that when you die, you become a star in the heavens.

I wonder if the bad guys get sucked into the black hole.

Geeze Louise. This sounds like the ramble of intellectual pygmies!!! Stars? Potatoes? Maybe the wrath of the Ur-Goddess is freezing your anima and preventing your brain cells from rubbing together.

OK, I'm sorry. But I WOULD like to know if anyone has an answer to my question about the anthropomorphic and materiomorphic tendencies mentioned above.

My religion is: Keep your religion to yourself unless asked.

My religion is: Keep the wall high and firm between Religion and State.

My religion is: What gives anyone the right to claim they know something metaphysical that no one else knows?

My religion is: Religion has a bad name and needs to clean up its act. Too much blood is on its hands.

My religion is: It's my choice if I choose to believe in it or not.

My religion is: it's OK to have no religion if you choose.

Dinavan:

The problem with being a star in heaven, is that (1) if you are above the critical mass- about twice the sun IIRC- you become a black hole anyway eventually; (2) the stars burn out after about 10 billion years so eternity isn't eternity, it's just long and boring; and (3) stars are not cool.

In any case, even the stars that don't become black holes eventually get lost as the universe (or the tablet) expands, so heaven gets very lonely in the end. Or perhaps all heads back towards the Gib Gnab, and the universe is cyclic and just goes on and on and round and round, like a Leonard Cohen record, which could be a bit depressing.

Unless the Apostronomers find the Missing Mass in the universe-- that's it, the problems of the universe are caused by Missing Mass, just like old Father Tom O'Shaughnessy told us. The trouble is, that the Astropophagists seem to have decided that when they see mass, it's going to be black mass. And it's all made of string anyway.

All sing now:

Oh you won't go to heaven when you die, Mary Ann...
