I just can't swallow the "belle of Bermuda"! Like you, I thought that "belle" must be "girl" at least. Though the whole Bermuda thing still seems doubtful!

Here is the recording on which Abrahams' transcription (posted by Q, above) is based.

I think the transcription needs some revision, but to what, I'm not sure!

That's because it's called "Full Fathom This," the name of Barry Finn's new CD which does include a version of "Finney Brown."

Sung on Nevis. "...'Feeny' perhaps her original name, since she was from Bermuda according to most accounts." In notes, the author mentions other sources of "Sally Brown" or "Roll and Go."

Loofing for words to a sea shanty 'Finney Brown", from the Carribean, a fairly close version to 'Sally Brown' but it's 2nd chours is full leading me to belive it's a capstan shanty. What I have goes lifke this,'Finney Brown was a bright mulada, Hi Ho Finney, Finney Brown was a bright mulada, spent my money on Finney Brown, Give her a dollar and she'll ask for another, Hi Ho Finney, Give her a dollar and she'll ask for another, spent my money on Finney Brown. Thanks
