blast from the past

couldnt find Les C the other night, remind me where it is, thought it was in greek St up on the left somewhere.

Will the old man make the steps?

Not the Molecather and the Hermit again.

Shame it clashes with Windward's final fling in St Albans, at the Duke of marlborough

Just as a matter of interest . who's doing The Tap that Friday ??

Oh for god's sake leave Breezy searching up and down Greek Street for the Cousins (No 49) then we can all watch Davy Graham in peace:

Bush Hall

Actually, it's very posh there now (used to be a snooker hall when it wasn't) so they probably wouldn't let him in anyway. Besides, it costs a tenner . . .

Davey Graham wont turn up. He never does, nowadays. Anyway, Les Cousins closed in the early 70s, I heard.

Davey is coming and is playing most wonderfully as he has always done. He has some great things he is currently performing including "Panic Room Blues" "I once had a Sweetheart" "SMTF" "Hornpipe for a Harpsichord" and "Blame it on my Youth"
Tickets are still available and anyone who genuinely cares about this type of music should buy one.
It really annoys me when people denigrate his repuation when they obviously have no personal knowledge or understanding of his musical importance and intellectual capabilities.
In a room with him, any of you would put your own guitars down pretty quick and just listen. He's that sort of player. Form comes and goes, genius is a different burden altogether.
Best regards

thanks for the enlightenment

mind you at ten quid I'm probably the only mudcatter who could afford it.

muppet,
not the real one though.

Blimey! It doesnt cost that much to see Vin Garbutt! and at least he would be well worth it.

Some of these old names are well past their sell by date, not Derek Brimo though, nor Shep Woolley, but Benbow? dont make me laugh too much.

Breezy
I don't know what economy you live in. It costs 1000 pounds to rent Bush Hall and I suspect that you are the sort of bloke (idiot seeks village) who pays £2.50 for each beer in the local you sink.
So ten pounds is pretty cheap you idiot.
I don't have to justify anyone on the bill to you my friend.

I last saw Davey in Belgium on the Kicking Mule Tour in 1977 and will always support him.
He is a true innovator, unlike so much of the cuurent traditionalist folk establishment.

GUEST, Mark Pavey: Obviously as an open forum we're all able to speak as we feel, but I have to say that I feel you may have over-reacted a little to Breezy & I also feel that's quite a shame. Postings in 'black & white' don't disappear & first impressions are difficult to adjust later.

I can quite see how you may have been riled by previous anonymous Guest postings, but please don't tar us regular Catters with the same brush.

Hope the gig goes well, I'm sure there will be an appreciative audience.

breezy - I think you should reconsider your opinion of Steve. He's still a great musician. His voice my not be what it was twenty years ago, but whose is? But he can still put a song over (Allan Castro sent me a pre-release copy of Steve's last CD for comments on which tracks to keep - I think he'd recorded 29 and they were going to cut it down to about 23; how's that for value?! When I played it I thought his version of Black Is The Colour was one of the best I'd ever heard, aged voice notwithstanding.) and he can make an audience enjoy themselves. He also has a fund of obscure and amusing songs.(Well it's a couple of years since I last played with him or saw him and he has been ill since then, but I can't imagine any of that's changed). You should pop down the Brewery Tap one Friday or Sunday to see what he's like (If you'll forgo your club one Sunday I'll even take you down there myself). Steve's been an important figure on the scene and, as Eel says above, the man deserves respect as a musician (ask Fleggie - Steve employed him for a while) and for what he did to popularise folk music (something you of all people should have sympathy with!).

Allan Castro from Ealing has put a site up for him - check out: Steve Benbow Site

Please Mudcatters,

It will be a great night. I'm trying to establish the club as a place where people can come and relax and enjoy an evening with a bit of history.

THe programme is wonderful but ticket sales have not been very good, despite a listing in the Guardian guide and two page feature coming on Monday in Time Out.

Please come!

£1000 to hire a venue!!

you could have our club for less than that anytime.

Didnt mean to offend, though I do, effortlessly, itb would appear, its a gift

Thanks guru and Mcp for apologising for me, better gig you 2.

Maybe you should look to book Harvey Andrews and Jeremy Taylor as a double header.

Now why havent I thought of that?

Hey I just did.

I used to see S Benbow regularly in and around the Croydon and S. london area during my early days.

learned the Molecatcher from him and it was a hit in me early days at College!

glad to see he's doing it still, but he is youger than Derek Brimstone

$1000 US for a plane ticket! I'm a big fan of Davy's work, would
love to see him play live!!! This is an awesome lineup of performers;
hope it's a success!

Anyone care to post a set list of what DG plays after the concert ?

guys, I had a craking night. Steve was ill and didn't do the gig, so I did it instead! a great night was had by all and there were some great artists on the bill. Davy was in fine form. He went on early and did a set and then came back to play three/four numbers at the end. He was absolutely brilliant and it was a privillage to meet him. We had a jam backstage and it was a true honour to get the opportunity to play with one of my idols.

I did start to hawk Davey's c.d's for him at the back of bush hall. The gent from Rollercoaster records had sent up a box with "After Hours" and another rollercoaster c.d but I was on such a high I wasn't exactly paying much attention. There was aslo "Hat", "Folk, Blues and Beyond" and a couple of others. I can try and find out for you.

Breezy, I will endevour to try and come up to St Albans at some point. However, we have had this conversation before about me not driving - (that is in the process of being rectified but it is seriously anoying at present.)

At the Bush I found the place - not a part of London I know - well I know East Acton and the Bush is just further down the road.. It s a very ethnically diverse part of London. Mark let me in early and Gilbert was doing his sound check. It was really good to see him and have some time to talk - unlike the Lullabies where I was running around all the while.

Davy Graham played a set to end the first half and opened with a tune that Charlie and Lucky Ranku had played at the Lullabies - Blue Bossa. The second set opened with Pamela Wynne-Shannon who was at the Tamworth event last year - she played pretty well but looked different. Then it was Gilbert - he opened with the Lullaby and played the best version I have heard of it - then Parasite and finally a reading of Nuages. It sounded really good to me and complimented DG especially well. Next on was Mark Pavey - I began to realise how his songs work - something that had rather eluded me. They are designed for live performance with acoustic guitar miked through a big PA and come across with great power in those circs. He also played 2 Jackson Frank songs - very well . Davy rounded off the evening and then we all went upstairs for the after hours bar - I stayed as long as I could.

The audience was pretty good. The Guardian article the same day on D Graham must have helped a lot. The article makes out that DG is pretty hard to handle and you can never be sure what he is going to play - and in one sense that s true. But there is another way of looking at it. It seemed to me that I was watching someone who plays 'in the moment' more than most musicians - and in that sense he is like Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor - with those guys you never know what you will get either. There is a sense when you watch/listen that you are watching a sage - but that his ideas are quite often a little beyond your reach - of course you cant be sure.

I gave Gilbert a copy of the 10SS
