Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hey Sandy by Harvey Andrews From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Nov 21 - 07:44 PM Our man Derek at the Tree Inn Folk Club in Bude (long-defunct, more's the pity) is a big fan of Harvey, and I believe (tbc!) that he got Harvey to our folk club on one occasion. I wasn't there that time. Derek was a bit reluctant to sing that song but we did persuade him on a couple of occasions. I've always known Christy's version from his early album Live In Dublin, and cherish it, but Derek sang it more slowly in measured fashion, just him and his guitar, all the more powerful for that. Great song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hey Sandy by Harvey Andrews From: GUEST,Steve C Date: 26 Nov 21 - 07:32 PM I didn't know Christie Moore did a version. I had "Writer of Songs" in 1972, and this was always the stand-out track (though Soap Opera and Soldier are both very powerful songs). Actually, Soap Opera (written, remember, in or before 1972) was 40 years before its time! He also wrote the superb "Death Come Easy". Definitely an underrated songwriter. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hey Sandy by Harvey Andrews From: GUEST Date: 30 Jun 05 - 06:54 PM Michaelr - This is par for the course - So many people are only aware of who sings a song , not its origins and who actually wrote it ! The number of times I have heard 'Black is the Colour' introduced as a Christie Moore song , when I have heard a 'live ' album where Cristie credits having learnt this traditional song from the singing of Alex Atterson . |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Hey Sandy by Harvey Andrews From: GUEST,michaelr Date: 30 Jun 05 - 06:48 PM One of my favorite songs from Christy Moore's repertoire. I didn't know Harvey Andrews wrote it. Well done! Side note: Time magazine's issue reporting the Kent State murders featured the now-famous cover photo of a young woman kneeling by one of the victims, her face contorted in a scream of outrage and agony. This was Mary Vecchio, a girl from my wife's neighborhood who ran away from home in Miami at age 15 and ended up at the Kent State protest. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: Lyr Add: HEY SANDY (Harvey Andrews) From: GUEST,harvey andrews Date: 30 Jun 05 - 08:17 AM Having just been reading Stephen Sondheim on how every word of a lyric is vitally important, here's the definitive original lyric; 1. Well, the sun was hot and the air was heavy As the marching men came by, And you ran to the door to watch them pass And you asked the soldiers, "Why?" But the sound of the steel and the black boot's heel Was pounding in your head, And your freedom's passed they have come at last With the blessings of the dead. CHORUS: Hey, Sandy, hey, Sandy, why were you the one? All the years of growing up are wasted now and gone. Did you see them turn? Did you feel the burn of the bullets as they flew? Hey, Sandy, hey, Sandy, just what did you do? Hey, Sandy, hey, Sandy, just what did you do? 2. In the college square they were standing there With the flag and with the drum, And the whispered word as the young ones stirred Was, "Now at last they've come" And the air was still with the lonely thrill Of now the hour is near And the smell of sweat was better yet Than the awful stench of fear. CHORUS 3. Through the air the shout as you all ran out Was "Why are these things done?" And you stood and you stared but no one cared For another campus bum And your songs were dead, and the hymns instead Were to the burning pyre And the words of youth, like Love and Truth, Just ashes in the fire. CHORUS 4. Did you throw the stone at the men alone, With their bayonets fixed for hire? Did you doubt that they would, say no one could? Did you scream when they opened fire? As the square ran red and your blood stain spread, And the darkness round you grew, Through the fear and the pain did you call the name Of the man you never knew? CHORUS
