I fell in love with this song when first I heard it, sung by Ricky Rackin of our parish, and was amazed to discover that it was apparently commissioned for the stage production of "War Horse." Folllowing up on that thread led me to the production itself, the amazing life-sized'puppets' created for it, and the UTube recordings by John Tams as well as the rousing rendition by the cast itself -- all of which I recommend to Mudcatters for a really good plunge into the theatrical world. Following this thread in retrospect is really satisfying!

"Commissioned for War Horse" is just a wee bit inaccurate, arminia!
Bits of it do get sung in War Horse, but (from John Tams' own website!) the song was written "around 1987", and featured in a TV dramatisation of "Cider with Rosie". Only a few years out, but great song, especialy for rounding off an evening!

I didnt realise that Mr Tams was an American - or he would never have used the word 'laborers' but would have used the English spelling, eh?
(I dont mind in the least when Yanks spell it that way - but you Brits, come on lazy folks. :-)

Well that clears up the confusion from the War Horse programme and the CD (only the first two verses in that). I couldn't understand why I already knew it.

I have been listening very carefully to the War Horse CD, where the gentry clearly have "fine array", and it sounds as if the "feel" the power rather than "steal" it. Definitely no sibilants.

When I attended a John Tams and Barry C concert in 2003 ish , I felt shortchanged when for their final song they sang Rolling Home and left the stage after 2 verses

Now I know why

SSSSTEAL - no question, Penny S! Must be poor reproduction on your CD, or else it's been changed for Warhorse!
He doesn't do the "frost" verse in this clip

I think it must have been changed - the reproduction isn't bad. And sssss's are very hard to obscure. I must say I prefer steal. The tune on that clip seems a bit different from that in War Horse, as well.

Thanks

Penny

Not that I'd be flogging you, DH, but the spelling of the words [UK or AM] is dependent on the transcriber not the writer. If you want to go along and add all the unnecessary vowels, and drop a few 'aitches' as well, feel free.
Blessings,
Barbara

I believe I heard early on in the rise of Rolling Home (like about 10+ years ago) that the 'Frost is on the hedgerow' verse was added later and written by John Tams at Roy Bailey's request, as in, please make the song longer.

These days most folks I know here on the left coast sing the last verse
So pass the bottle round
And let the toasts go free
It's a health to every laborer
Where he or she may be
Fair wages now and ever
Let's reap what we have sown
When we go rolling home (2X)

Blessings
Barbara

The last verse of "Rolling Home" - as written by John Tams - has the non-gender specific

"Here's a health to every labourer
Wherever THEY may be..."

So there's no need to change the original anyway.

This song was used in the 1988 film "The Raggedy Rawney" starring Bob Hoskins, when the travellers were singing and dancing around the campfire.

Is this song related to I've Got Sixpence?

From the DT:

I've got sixpence
Jolly. jolly sixpence
I've got sixpence to last me all my life
I've got twopence to spend
And twopence to lend
And twopence to send home to my wife-poor wife.

CHORUS: No cares have I to grieve me
No pretty little girls to deceive me
I'm happy as a lark believe me
As we go rolling, rolling home
Rolling home (rolling home)
Rolling home (rolling home)
By the light of the silvery moo-oo-on
Happy is the day when we line up for our pay
As we go rolling, rolling home.

I've wondered that, too, oldhippie. Both songs seem to be excellent ways to conclude evenings of drinking and singing....
I wonder if John Tams had "sixpence" in mind when he wrote his song. My guess is that he did.

"I've got sixpence" was indeed popular in the Army during the Great War.
