Happy Birthday!

Charles Zimmermann

was born on 7/1/1862 in Rhode Island.
(d1/16/1916)

Although he was the son of Charles Z. Zimmermann who played in the US Naval Academy (Anapolis) band, as far as I know he was completely unrelated to the autoharpthenous Charles Zimmermann (b1817) or to Ethel "Merman" Zimmerman (b1908) or even to Bobby Zimmerman (b1941).

Second Lieutenant Charles Zimmermann became USNA Bandmaster at age 26. He began composing a march for each graduating class and, for the class of 1907, composed "Anchors Aweigh." (Two verses by Midshipman Alfred Hart Miles, last stanza by Midshipman Royal Lovell, Class of 1926.)

          Stand, Navy, down the field
          Sails set to the sky;
          We'll never change our course
          So Army, you steer shy.
