Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: GUEST Date: 26 Jul 05 - 10:43 PM Barry has continued to improve each day. He was transferred today to Spaulding Rehabilitation long term acute care facility. We have no reason to think that he will not enjoy a complete recovery. His room overlooks the Charles River, with a view of the boats going back and forth. He was a little too tired to appreciate it after the transfer, but I know he'll be enthused about it tomorrow. There is also a beautiful waterfront park that belongs to the hospital. Barry now has the complete Mudcat thread printed out, and is reading a little of it each day. He loves it, and feels very lucky to have all of you. He'll be working hard in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and possibly speech (he's a little hoarse after being intubated so long). If I know Barry, he'll be home well before the rehab predicts. So, good news all around on this front. Thanks for everything, Justine |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: JudyB Date: 26 Jul 05 - 10:32 AM Refreshing and hoping all is going well and that we'll get an update soon. Reading the last few posts, I have a vision of Barry marching (slowly) down the hospital corridor with the requisite tubes trailing behind, singing a shanty version of "Deck the Halls" at the top of his lungs! It's an interesting image! We're thinking of you both often, and sending energy your way. Love to you both, JudyB & Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Pauline L Date: 22 Jul 05 - 10:33 PM I'm refreshing this thread because I really hope Barry continues to feel stronger and better and I really hope someone will tell us about it. |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Pauline L Date: 21 Jul 05 - 11:07 PM Rita, you are so right about the physiological benefits of singing. I had a bad respiratory infection several years ago and I couldn't sing. (I've never been able to sing well, but that's another story.) I called my method Low Impact Aerobic Singing. I started singing something gentle, and when I could do that, I progressed to High Impact Aerobic Singing. I worked for a long time on Mary Ellen Carter, a real belt-it-out song. I learned to pace myself so that I could sing the entire song. That was hard. When I could do it, I kept doing it for a while. Then I worked on singing the same song one octave higher, which took more breath, and paced myself until I could do it. It certainly felt good to be able to do it. I really don't mean to divert the discussion from Barry and his recovery. I just want to say that singing in the ICU is wonderful. I hope it means that his body and his spirirt are both strong. |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Ferrara Date: 21 Jul 05 - 09:32 PM Well it would be grand if Barry could get home soon. If he was still in the ICU last Saturday though, it could still be a while. It varies from person to person, but they may decide to be a little extra conservative. After all, Barry's just had two bouts of major surgery, and had the extra burden of liver failure until the second liver was found. Well I sure hope it's soon. Barry I hope you break all records for a rapid recovery now. |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: JudyB Date: 21 Jul 05 - 09:08 PM Sounds like Mudcat may be stabilizing a bit, so I thought I'd refresh this and see if there was any more news. It sounded as if he might be coming home sometime this week, so I've got my fingers crossed! JudyB |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Ferrara Date: 18 Jul 05 - 02:46 PM Oh yes wow. Barry you're incredible. After I got my heart AND was out of the ICU (I'm not as precocious as Barry ...) they gave me a little tube thing I was supposed to blow into and make the ball bounce I didn't like that tube thing. I decided to sing. I didn't actually belt anything out, because I hadn't had much breath for a long time and also I wasn't sedated any longer, so was aware of the neighboring rooms. But it was wonderful to be able to sing at all after months of not having the breath for it! I tried to find songs that would take a lot of breath, fast bouncy stuff. (It was late October and I remember singing Deck the Halls and God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.) The lady came back and I blew into the tube and she said I didn't need to use it any more, my lungs were doing great. I never did use it.... This proves once again that that singing is good for one's health. Keep singing Barry! Rita F |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: GUEST,MMario Date: 18 Jul 05 - 09:27 AM FANTASTIC! And I agree with the belting - besides - most tom lewis songs require belting. 'minds me of the time I got hauled into hospital after I passed out with low blood sugar one night; and while waiting for the blood tests to come back sat there and sang two hours of renaissance faire pub songs. |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: jeffp Date: 18 Jul 05 - 08:58 AM Absolutely amazing! You can't keep a good man down. Well Done, Barry. Jeff |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Celtaddict Date: 17 Jul 05 - 11:46 PM I love the thought of Tom Lewis songs being belted out in the Unit! Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Barry Finn Date: 17 Jul 05 - 09:58 PM Thank you again for all the support, wishes, and kind thoughts. Barry was taken off the respirator the day before yesterday and has done better everyday since. He immediately began singing a song from a Tom Lewis tape that was playing. It was hysterical. He is still in the ICU, but we expect good things from here on in. He is also still a little confused, but very entertaining. Thank you all, too, for the encouragement you have sent my way. I would love to be able to tnank you individually, but there are so many. And thanks to Mario and Jacqui for the beautiful shawl. I'm not really the type of person to say this, but when it arrived and I put it on, I literally felt a warm embrace from all of Barry's Mudcat friends. Barry is very lucky to have all of you. Justine |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Dani Date: 12 Jul 05 - 09:18 PM Yes, thanks for bringing it up. Had a conversation with my daughter, who knows other folks who've had transplants, both successful and not. We talked about donors and families, and remembered to talk among each other so EVERYONE knows when you're a donor. ALL in our prayers. Dani |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 12 Jul 05 - 04:40 PM Hip hip hooray for Barry's liver! I'm so glad, and join the Mudcat chorus singing songs of joy and relief. Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Anglo Date: 12 Jul 05 - 01:54 PM Well, I just heard the news, and I think it's great. Congrats Barry, Long life and happiness. John |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Ferrara Date: 12 Jul 05 - 01:51 PM Just a thought about something I should have realized days ago: Some of Barry's friends might like to send some healing thoughts, energy, songs, prayers or whatever feels right for Barry's liver donors and their families. The first miracle with an organ transplant is always the fact that someone was generous enough to make the organ donation. I know that even though I'm not a churchgoer I always felt comforted and grateful when anyone told me they had been praying for my donor family. |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: GUEST,Lynn Noel Date: 11 Jul 05 - 09:31 AM Barry, you know how much I love your singing of Juliana, and it didn't seem right that our first of a new chantey sing series lacked your voice, spirit, and energy. You were hard at work starting a regular sing when I first came back to Boston seven years ago, even if it meant driving home from the North End to Portsmouth after bar time! We might not have had a Chanteyboat at the Boston Folk Festival at all if you hadn't shared your harbor cruise set with me that first year, and the audience quote is still on the front page of my website: knowing that it belongs to you as much, if not more, than to me. "" I was expecting to get a nice little cruise around the harbor to see the sights, but hearing your voices I had attention for nothing else." (Boston Folk Festival)" I feel the same way every time I hear you sing. I can't count the times we've sung together, from Mystic to Old Songs to the Little Red Lighthouse to the Press Room, but I treasure every one and look forward to the next. You're going to get through this and come sing with us at MIT on the Charles, because I know that having a regular chantey sing in Boston is as much your dream as mine. You are in my thoughts and prayers: with a separate prayer thread for you and the children, Justine! The Finn Family is precious to us all. Please let us know when it's OK to have visitors, and I'll be there in a flash (packet). When you're up to it, we'll mount a Chantey Raid on Mass General, see if we don't! Yesterday we headed over to the MIT Museum and sang for the clipper ship paintings, and I know you would have loved every minute of it. We needed you, kid: you still have to teach me the Flying Cloud! Love and prayers to all, Lynn |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Micca Date: 11 Jul 05 - 01:29 AM Barry, you were one of the very first singers I heard on my First trip to the Getaway in 2001 ( it was at the Royal Mile on the Thursday evening) and I was very impressed with what I heard, so Get well and your singing can do so again, Much best and healing thoughts from London (UK), Micca |

Barry, you're in my thoughts -- may you come through this with flying colors, and may we all get more chances to sing with you! Justine, thanks so much for keeping us up-to-date. Be sure to take care of yourself, get some sleep, and don't forget to eat! Love to you both, Nancy |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Jul 05 - 11:01 PM I hope all is well with you and yours. Justine That you would be thinking of us as well-- you take my breath away, Justine. Bless you both, and thanks for taking a moment to update us. We will not stop praying! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: JennyO Date: 10 Jul 05 - 10:41 PM His new liver "pinked up" right away Wow, I knew there had to be a reason why I picked the big pink candle to light. I believe a lot of those and all the positive energy really did make a difference. Still burning the candle and sending the energy until he is out of the woods, and visualising that liver staying "pinked up". Love to both of you, Jenny |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: JudyB Date: 10 Jul 05 - 09:50 PM What wonderful news! They do say third time's the charm! We just got back from the first MIT Chantey Sing on the Charles, and everyone there sent their best - in fact, if you had a window open this afternoon, you might have heard the rousing chorus of "Roll the Old Chariot" we used to roll some of the energy in the room over in your direction! I'm terribly fuzzy about names, but Lynn Noel is one of the organizers there, and she specifically asked us to give you her best wishes. Celtaddict was up from Connecticut, Alison Lee Freeman was down from Maine (as were Charley & I), and there was someone from Albany who'd heard about the shanty session at Old Songs. And lots of folks from the Boston area - a really nice session! And a lot of positive energy headed your way from those folks. Thanks again for the news, Justine, and do remember to take a little time for yourself - breathe in, nice and slow; hold for a few seconds; and let the stress flow out with the air. And the peanut butter crackers sound like a great idea! Love to you both (from me and Charley Noble), JudyB |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Tinker Date: 10 Jul 05 - 09:46 PM Justine thanks so much for the up date. Give a few hugs around for the folks at home for all of us. I printed out one of the pictures of Barry singing at Mystic off of his Mudcat photo page and left in in a high traffic part of the house to send back a little of the energy he belts out in his singing back at him each time I passed by today. Like Jeri I found myself singing songs I know Barry sings and thinking about work songs.... well that got me thinking about working ladies so I added a few blues too...just for smiles. Just don't forget to breathe yourself ... Tinker |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Jeri Date: 10 Jul 05 - 08:29 PM Seamus, yuck. Do people really eat fava beans? I want to echo what Tom said. I've been quite worried, and hoping to hear something good. I'm not religious, so what Barry got from me energy-wise was a lot of 'thinking of' and singing. I started singing songs I knew he knew, then figured out what he'd really want me to sing. I was pretty amazed to discover know all the words to Warren Zevon's "Carmelita." "I hear mariachi static on my radio..." Here's to the the Old Man's liver -- may it just keep rollin' along! |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Jul 05 - 08:12 PM Oh, gawd, Justine . . . I know it's not over yet, but the news is good. Barry's got the easy part -- all he has to do is ride that elephant downhill. You, on the other hand, are stuck with all the rest of getting on with life AND dealing with the worry, etc. of the love of your life being in the situation he's in. Been there (last year with Curmudgeon), but you've got it a heck of a lot worse. Seriously, take CARE of yourself. Keep cheese peanut butter crackers in the car for when you've forgotten to eat. Don't sweat an extra glass of wine before you sleep. (Make sure you sleep.) It's taken me until a couple months ago to recover from last year. You're going to be fragile for awhile. Let US do whatever we can -- and don't be afraid to ask. We've got the white light focussed on Barry -- but I know I've got it focussed on you, too. Much love sent your way. Linn |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Ferrara Date: 10 Jul 05 - 07:10 PM Oh this is wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful news! When I was in the hospital about a week after my transplant a woman visited me who had a heart transplant about 5 months earlier. She asked me, "Do you feel that you've been lifted up on a silver platform of other people's prayers?" Well that was exactly how I felt and how I feel today. Justine thank you so much for giving us this news ... Whoops, I am crying ... time out .... We will keep sending those prayers and warm wishes your way, Barry and Justine, and hoping that this time the outcome will be the very best you could ask for. Rita |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Barry Finn Date: 10 Jul 05 - 06:44 PM Good news. Barry received another liver early this morning. The doctors are pleased at how the surgery went. The entire transplant team was on for this one, and it all went without a hitch. His new liver "pinked up" right away, and even made some bile! These are good things. It looks like Barry has been given another chance. I believe in the power of positive energy and prayer, and I thank all of you for the amazing support. I hope all is well with you and yours. Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Janie Date: 10 Jul 05 - 12:02 AM Barry, I remember so clearly when I first met you, at my first Getaway. I am from landlocked West Virgina, and don't know if I had ever heard shanties sung until that weekend. You blew me away with the passion and soul in your voice, conveying the HARD nature of the work of the sailor. I was really nervous at that first Getaway, and unused to singing with or for other people. You were so kind and encouraging to each person who sang. You conveyed real interest in each person's music, regardless of talent or experience. You so valued the sharing and joining together in song. You've got another piece of hard pulling to do. You know about hard work. Use what you know. Our hands are on the rope with you, Brother. And with you also Justine. We'll keep pulling with you. Janie |

The children need you healthy. Stay strong. I keep you and Barry in my prayers. Large candle lit for you tonight. Love, Mary |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: katlaughing Date: 09 Jul 05 - 04:45 PM Justine, thanks so muhc for taking the time to let us know how things are. I echo the others, take care of yourself, too. Also, you probably already know this, but I would say keep reading to him, talking to him, and play music for him, via Walkman or whatever. It all helps one in staying connected while so ill and/or unconscious. Hearing is one faculty which is always *on* so to speak and the words of love, etc. do register deep within. We played Mozart on a cassette when my mom was very ill in ICU, many years ago. It was some of her favourite music. It helped her to focus on the uplifting music rather than the pain and fear of illness. Even when she was in and out of consciousness, she recognised the music. A loved one's voice is so reassuring, too. Sending Love, Light and Thank-givings for a new and compatable liver and complete recovery for highest good of all concerned, Kat & Rog |

Thanks so much for letting us know the news, even though it's not the news any of us wanted. I don't know Barry as well as Charlie does, but from what I've seen, he has a really big heart and a really big soul, and I think they'll get him through this. I know it's hard to think of anything else - but try to remember to eat occasionally, and breathe! A few slow deep breaths can really help. Love to you both, JudyB |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Barry Finn Date: 09 Jul 05 - 12:22 PM Hello friends, Barry is still very ill and in the ICU. He is holding on for another liver, and is at the top of the list. The doctors are hoping it comes soon, because the recent transplant is definitely not working. Barry opens his eyes from time to time, and seems to know he is in the hospital, seems to recognize his sister and me. I printed out the entire thread and read it to him the day before yesterday. It seemed that he took it in. He is at the best facility and we are hoping for the best. Thanks for your messages, Justine |
Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Dani Date: 09 Jul 05 - 12:39 AM Reading the thread on Shenandoah, I am reminded of so many of your contributions and inspirations, Barry. Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Susan of DT Date: 08 Jul 05 - 08:58 AM Any word on whether they decided the transplant is working? (see Justine's [Barry Finn] posting July 6, above) I certainly hope they don't have to do this again. Is all going well?? |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 08 Jul 05 - 08:22 AM I just found this thread. Heard about it in another and had to get right here. I do hope things are going well, Barry. I remember the first Getaway you attended. You and I had exchanged PM's to organize a workshop on Prison Songs having never met face-to-face. When I arrived late Friday night at the dining hall the first thing I heard was your voice ringing out with a sea chantey. The workshop went well. The next year, I think it was, you held a party for the Mudcat at your house. In a blessed moment of insanity, Marge and I drove up from Maryland. That Saturday, I joined a song circle that lasted from 1 PM to 1 AM. So many wonderful singers and players, I barely took time to eat. People wonder from where your music comes. I know it comes from a huge heart secretly hidden in your normal sized body. You are a generous and sensitive person with a lot of love for humankind. I do want you around for many more years. You are in my prayers. Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: RE: Barry Finn in hospital From: Naemanson Date: 07 Jul 05 - 08:21 PM I was just breezing through the site and caught the title of the thread. I jumped on it to find out what was going on. But it sounds like things are going well. Barry went up on the lift for some replacement parts, lube job, and oil change. I remember offering to buy him a beer at the Press Room. His reply was, "Are ya tryin' to kill me?" I paid for his ginger ale. C'mon Barry. You can do it again. Get through this so we can meet up at the Press Room in September. I'll send you my favorite picture, Wakana swinging me in a hammock. |

Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Jul 05 - 12:36 AM Thanks again for all the good thoughts. Barry's hit a bit of a rough spot. Tomorrow is day seven for his transplant, and the doctors need to decide if this one is working or not. If not, they will list him for an emergency liver and do another retransplant. They haven't given up and Barry hasn't either. He is sedated, but fighting. Barry believes in good kharma, positive thinking... I believe in prayer, so whatever you send his way is appreciated. Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: GUEST,Tinker Date: 04 Jul 05 - 03:24 PM Went away for the weekend and just found this message. Barry from the start you've been one of my favorite Getaway people. Your music makes me just have to sing along. And after the close up's of your last scar, I figure I've got an interest in making sure you do this up right one more time and join us belting out a few more songs. Besides, someone has to keep that other Irishman in line. Blessings and Light Tinker |
Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Jul 05 - 02:58 PM Geeziz Barry..........I haven't been around much lately and to come back to this really sucks. I am glad the news is what it is .......... But somehow I feel the need to chastise your ass! So consider your ass chastised for some reason and then get well.....for the long term. Too many people love you around here to do otherwise! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: Ferrara Date: 04 Jul 05 - 01:16 AM Barry, we'll be thinking of you now as you are getting through the second hardest part (the waiting is hardest, not?) I am SO glad a liver was found for you without a long wait. That should help you cope with the recovery. I have been praying all day that you will have a full, complication-free recovery this time and that the next 20 or 30 years will be the best ones of your life! And, selfishly, that Bill and I will get to hear you sing again SOON. Love ya Barry, Rita F |

Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: Barry Finn Date: 03 Jul 05 - 09:38 PM Wow, Barry will love all these posts. I will print them and bring them to the hospital as soon as he is more alert. He is really holding his own, getting stronger everyday. He hit the top of the transplant list on Tuesday at 4:00 pm, after a rapid decline over the weekend. At 9:00 pm on Tuesday, he got the call that a liver had become available. (If you knew Barry four years ago, you may remember he waited over a month at the top of the list for a match.) The surgery was long - 9 hours, then he had a follow up surgery on Friday that was another 4 hours. But now, he looks good, still heavily sedated to keep him resting, and on the road to recovery. Thanks for all the nice comments, good wishes... Barry is lucky to know all of you. Justine Someone asked me for an address Mass General Hospital Blake Building 7th Floor 55 Fruit St. Boston, MA 02114 |

Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: Charley Noble Date: 02 Jul 05 - 02:25 PM Barry's wife is expecting him to come back strong, according to her e-mail to me this morning. Who could hold Barry back? Certainly no force of nature thtat I'm familar with. Yes, Barry was looking a little wane at the Mystic Sea Music Festival but certainly didn't hold back when he was leading songs. He's one of our best traditional style sea music singers and we owe him big time for his distinctive renditions of songs. He's also a damn fine fella. I look forward to singing with him again this summer. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: Jeri Date: 02 Jul 05 - 02:17 PM Jeez. He hasn't been looking that great lately, but I figured that was just Barry. I hope he got a perfect-for-him liver this time 'round, and goes on to heal perfectly too! Maybe he could have his people call John's people. Much love to Barry and the Finn Family. |
Subject: RE: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: katlaughing Date: 02 Jul 05 - 02:04 PM Thanks so much, Tom, for letting us know. Barry's been with us so long and contributed so much and has such a STRONG spirit. I was just transferring addys from one old phonebook to a new one and noticed I still had the last hospital addy from Barry's first transplant. Barry, I am grateful you went to the top of the list, but not that it took getting worse to get there! We love you and send an unending stream of good thoughts and thanks-givings for the best possible outcome for all concerned. The Mudcat has incredible powers for helping one another at such times, as you know. I've just experienced that, myself...coming up to my 8th week after aortic valve replacement and plenty of good energy from Mudcatters helped me through. In Love and Peace Profound, Kat & Rog |

Subject: BS: Barry Finn in hospital From: curmudgeon Date: 02 Jul 05 - 01:33 PM I just learned this morning that Barry Finn, our good friend and comrade-in-song, is in hospital beginning the recovery from a liver replacement. This is Barry's second such procedure. The first didn't take and while he's known for a while that it would have to be redone, he didn't know exactly when due to the waiting list for such organs. a worsening of his condition, however, put him at the head of the list. Barry's wife, Justine, adds, "Second time around is a little trickier, but you know Barry's spirit. " I'll post snail mail for card senders when I find it. Meanwhile, post messages here, send good thoughts, et al, and sing a shanty for Barry -- Tom
