I just learned this morning that Barry Finn, our good friend and comrade-in-song, is in hospital beginning the recovery from a liver replacement. This is Barry's second such procedure. The first didn't take and while he's known for a while that it would have to be redone, he didn't know exactly when due to the waiting list for such organs. a worsening of his condition, however, put him at the head of the list.

Barry's wife, Justine, adds, "Second time around is
a little trickier, but you know Barry's spirit. "

Thanks so much, Tom, for letting us know. Barry's been with us so long and contributed so much and has such a STRONG spirit. I was just transferring addys from one old phonebook to a new one and noticed I still had the last hospital addy from Barry's first transplant.

Barry, I am grateful you went to the top of the list, but not that it took getting worse to get there! We love you and send an unending stream of good thoughts and thanks-givings for the best possible outcome for all concerned. The Mudcat has incredible powers for helping one another at such times, as you know. I've just experienced that, myself...coming up to my 8th week after aortic valve replacement and plenty of good energy from Mudcatters helped me through.

Barry's wife is expecting him to come back strong, according to her e-mail to me this morning. Who could hold Barry back? Certainly no force of nature thtat I'm familar with.

Yes, Barry was looking a little wane at the Mystic Sea Music Festival but certainly didn't hold back when he was leading songs. He's one of our best traditional style sea music singers and we owe him big time for his distinctive renditions of songs. He's also a damn fine fella.

I look forward to singing with him again this summer.

Wow, Barry will love all these posts. I will print them and bring them to the hospital as soon as he is more alert. He is really holding his own, getting stronger everyday. He hit the top of the transplant list on Tuesday at 4:00 pm, after a rapid decline over the weekend. At 9:00 pm on Tuesday, he got the call that a liver had become available. (If you knew Barry four years ago, you may remember he waited over a month at the top of the list for a match.) The surgery was long - 9 hours, then he had a follow up surgery on Friday that was another 4 hours. But now, he looks good, still heavily sedated to keep him resting, and on the road to recovery.   Thanks for all the nice comments, good wishes... Barry is lucky to know all of you. Justine

Any news of how things are progressing? It's pretty complex and extensive surgery as I understand it, so I suspect each step in recovery normally takes quite a while.

Thanks again for all the good thoughts. Barry's hit a bit of a rough spot. Tomorrow is day seven for his transplant, and the doctors need to decide if this one is working or not. If not, they will list him for an emergency liver and do another retransplant. They haven't given up and Barry hasn't either. He is sedated, but fighting. Barry believes in good kharma, positive thinking... I believe in prayer, so whatever you send his way is appreciated. Justine

I was just breezing through the site and caught the title of the thread. I jumped on it to find out what was going on. But it sounds like things are going well. Barry went up on the lift for some replacement parts, lube job, and oil change. I remember offering to buy him a beer at the Press Room. His reply was, "Are ya tryin' to kill me?" I paid for his ginger ale.

C'mon Barry. You can do it again. Get through this so we can meet up at the Press Room in September. I'll send you my favorite picture, Wakana swinging me in a hammock.

I just found this thread. Heard about it in another and had to get right here. I do hope things are going well, Barry. I remember the first Getaway you attended. You and I had exchanged PM's to organize a workshop on Prison Songs having never met face-to-face. When I arrived late Friday night at the dining hall the first thing I heard was your voice ringing out with a sea chantey. The workshop went well. The next year, I think it was, you held a party for the Mudcat at your house. In a blessed moment of insanity, Marge and I drove up from Maryland. That Saturday, I joined a song circle that lasted from 1 PM to 1 AM. So many wonderful singers and players, I barely took time to eat. People wonder from where your music comes. I know it comes from a huge heart secretly hidden in your normal sized body. You are a generous and sensitive person with a lot of love for humankind. I do want you around for many more years. You are in my prayers.

Any word on whether they decided the transplant is working? (see Justine's [Barry Finn] posting July 6, above) I certainly hope they don't have to do this again. Is all going well??

Hello friends,

Barry is still very ill and in the ICU. He is holding on for another liver, and is at the top of the list. The doctors are hoping it comes soon, because the recent transplant is definitely not working. Barry opens his eyes from time to time, and seems to know he is in the hospital, seems to recognize his sister and me. I printed out the entire thread and read it to him the day before yesterday. It seemed that he took it in. He is at the best facility and we are hoping for the best. Thanks for your messages, Justine

Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. Thanks so much for letting us know the news, even though it's not the news any of us wanted. I don't know Barry as well as Charlie does, but from what I've seen, he has a really big heart and a really big soul, and I think they'll get him through this. I know it's hard to think of anything else - but try to remember to eat occasionally, and breathe! A few slow deep breaths can really help.

Justine, thanks so muhc for taking the time to let us know how things are. I echo the others, take care of yourself, too.

Also, you probably already know this, but I would say keep reading to him, talking to him, and play music for him, via Walkman or whatever. It all helps one in staying connected while so ill and/or unconscious. Hearing is one faculty which is always *on* so to speak and the words of love, etc. do register deep within.

We played Mozart on a cassette when my mom was very ill in ICU, many years ago. It was some of her favourite music. It helped her to focus on the uplifting music rather than the pain and fear of illness. Even when she was in and out of consciousness, she recognised the music. A loved one's voice is so reassuring, too.

    I remember so clearly when I first met you, at my first Getaway. I am from landlocked West Virgina, and don't know if I had ever heard shanties sung until that weekend. You blew me away with the passion and soul in your voice, conveying the HARD nature of the work of the sailor.

    I was really nervous at that first Getaway, and unused to singing with or for other people. You were so kind and encouraging to each person who sang. You conveyed real interest in each person's music, regardless of talent or experience. You so valued the sharing and joining together in song.

Good news. Barry received another liver early this morning. The doctors are pleased at how the surgery went. The entire transplant team was on for this one, and it all went without a hitch. His new liver "pinked up" right away, and even made some bile! These are good things. It looks like Barry has been given another chance. When I was in the hospital about a week after my transplant a woman visited me who had a heart transplant about 5 months earlier. She asked me, "Do you feel that you've been lifted up on a silver platform of other people's prayers?" Well that was exactly how I felt and how I feel today.

I know it's not over yet, but the news is good.

Barry's got the easy part -- all he has to do is ride that elephant downhill.

Been there (last year with Curmudgeon), but you've got it a heck of a lot worse.

Seriously, take CARE of yourself. Keep cheese peanut butter crackers in the car for when you've forgotten to eat. Don't sweat an extra glass of wine before you sleep. (Make sure you sleep.)

It's taken me until a couple months ago to recover from last year. You're going to be fragile for awhile.

Let US do whatever we can -- and don't be afraid to ask.

We've got the white light focussed on Barry -- but I know I've got it focussed on you, too.

I want to echo what Tom said. I've been quite worried, and hoping to hear something good. I'm not religious, so what Barry got from me energy-wise was a lot of 'thinking of' and singing. I started singing songs I knew he knew, then figured out what he'd really want me to sing. I was pretty amazed to discover know all the words to Warren Zevon's "Carmelita." "I hear mariachi static on my radio..."

What wonderful news! They do say third time's the charm!

We just got back from the first MIT Chantey Sing on the Charles, and everyone there sent their best - in fact, if you had a window open this afternoon, you might have heard the rousing chorus of "Roll the Old Chariot" we used to roll some of the energy in the room over in your direction!

I'm terribly fuzzy about names, but Lynn Noel is one of the organizers there, and she specifically asked us to give you her best wishes. Celtaddict was up from Connecticut, Alison Lee Freeman was down from Maine (as were Charley & I), and there was someone from Albany who'd heard about the shanty session at Old Songs. And lots of folks from the Boston area - a really nice session! And a lot of positive energy headed your way from those folks.

Thanks again for the news, Justine, and do remember to take a little time for yourself - breathe in, nice and slow; hold for a few seconds; and let the stress flow out with the air. And the peanut butter crackers sound like a great idea!

Barry, you know how much I love your singing of Juliana, and it didn't seem right that our first of a new chantey sing series lacked your voice, spirit, and energy. You were hard at work starting a regular sing when I first came back to Boston seven years ago, even if it meant driving home from the North End to Portsmouth after bar time! We might not have had a Chanteyboat at the Boston Folk Festival at all if you hadn't shared your harbor cruise set with me that first year, and the audience quote is still on the front page of my website: knowing that it belongs to you as much, if not more, than to me.

I feel the same way every time I hear you sing. Please let us know when it's OK to have visitors, and I'll be there in a flash (packet). When you're up to it, we'll mount a Chantey Raid on Mass General, see if we don't! Yesterday we headed over to the MIT Museum and sang for the clipper ship paintings, and I know you would have loved every minute of it. We needed you, kid: you still have to teach me the Flying Cloud!

Just a thought about something I should have realized days ago: Some of Barry's friends might like to send some healing thoughts, energy, songs, prayers or whatever feels right for Barry's liver donors and their families. The first miracle with an organ transplant is always the fact that someone was generous enough to make the organ donation. I know that even though I'm not a churchgoer I always felt comforted and grateful when anyone told me they had been praying for my donor family.

Hip hip hooray for Barry's liver! I'm so glad, and join the Mudcat chorus singing songs of joy and relief. Rita, I've been thinking of the donors, too. My daughter filled out her application for a driver's license today (shudder) and checked off the "donor" box- good girl.

Yes, thanks for bringing it up. Had a conversation with my daughter, who knows other folks who've had transplants, both successful and not. We talked about donors and families, and remembered to talk among each other so EVERYONE knows when you're a donor.

Thank you again for all the support, wishes, and kind thoughts. Barry was taken off the respirator the day before yesterday and has done better everyday since. He immediately began singing a song from a Tom Lewis tape that was playing. It was hysterical. He is still in the ICU, but we expect good things from here on in. He is also still a little confused, but very entertaining.

Thank you all, too, for the encouragement you have sent my way. I would love to be able to tnank you individually, but there are so many. And thanks to Mario and Jacqui for the beautiful shawl. I'm not really the type of person to say this, but when it arrived and I put it on, I literally felt a warm embrace from all of Barry's Mudcat friends. Barry is very lucky to have all of you. Oh yes wow. Barry you're incredible.

After I got my heart AND was out of the ICU (I'm not as precocious as Barry ...) they gave me a little tube thing I was supposed to blow into and make the ball bounce in order to clear out and strengthen my lungs.

I didn't like that tube thing. I decided to sing. I didn't actually belt anything out, because I hadn't had much breath for a long time and also I wasn't sedated any longer, so was aware of the neighboring rooms. But it was wonderful to be able to sing at all after months of not having the breath for it! I tried to find songs that would take a lot of breath, fast bouncy stuff. (It was late October and I remember singing Deck the Halls and God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.) The lady came back and I blew into the tube and she said I didn't need to use it any more, my lungs were doing great. I never did use it.... This proves once again that that singing is good for one's health.

Well it would be grand if Barry could get home soon. If he was still in the ICU last Saturday though, it could still be a while. It varies from person to person, but they may decide to be a little extra conservative. After all, Barry's just had two bouts of major surgery, and had the extra burden of liver failure until the second liver was found.

Well I sure hope it's soon. Barry I hope you break all records for a rapid recovery now.

Rita, you are so right about the physiological benefits of singing. I had a bad respiratory infection several years ago and I couldn't sing. (I've never been able to sing well, but that's another story.) I called my method Low Impact Aerobic Singing. I started singing something gentle, and when I could do that, I progressed to High Impact Aerobic Singing. I worked for a long time on Mary Ellen Carter, a real belt-it-out song. I learned to pace myself so that I could sing the entire song. That was hard. When I could do it, I kept doing it for a while. Then I worked on singing the same song one octave higher, which took more breath, and paced myself until I could do it. It certainly felt good to be able to do it.

I really don't mean to divert the discussion from Barry and his recovery. I just want to say that singing in the ICU is wonderful. I hope it means that his body and his spirirt are both strong.

Barry has continued to improve each day. He was transferred today to Spaulding Rehabilitation long term acute care facility. We have no reason to think that he will not enjoy a complete recovery. His room overlooks the Charles River, with a view of the boats going back and forth. He was a little too tired to appreciate it after the transfer, but I know he'll be enthused about it tomorrow. There is also a beautiful waterfront park that belongs to the hospital. Barry now has the complete Mudcat thread printed out, and is reading a little of it each day. He loves it, and feels very lucky to have all of you. He'll be working hard in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and possibly speech (he's a little hoarse after being intubated so long). If I know Barry, he'll be home well before the rehab predicts. So, good news all around on this front. Thanks for everything, Justine

Had an e-mail from Justine today allowing how Barry's on the mend.

"Barry is not quite yet phone-worthy, but he is making such steady progress
that he's sure he will be soon. His voice took a beating from the tube, but
they assure him it is all reversible. H So, Barry is pushing them to let him come home this week, and finish his recuperationn here with maybe a hospital bed and some visiting nurses... Things are going swimmingly!"

Some fantastic news tonight, Thursday. Barry is scheduled to come home tomorrow a.m. He had a visit at Mass General today and everything looked very good. Spaulding arranged some services for him at home, and he's been cleared to finish his recuperation here. We are thrilled that his ordeal is drawing to a close. All he needs to do now is rest and put some weight on.
