Happy Birthday!

Ethnomusicologist - (the one that recorded for us the tunes of every folk song),

Ruth Crawford Seeger

was born on 7/3/1901
(d11/18/1953)

An excellent biography of her has been written - details of that and of her life are on Peggy Seeger's website www.pegseeger.com. In addition to all that, she was wife of Charles & mother of Peggy & Mike Seeger. [thanx Peggy]

"Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) is frequently considered the most significent American female composer in this century. Joining Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell as a key member of the 1920s avant garde, she went on to study with modernist theorist and future husband, Charles Seeger... Collaborating with Carl Sandburg on folk song arrangements in the twenties, and with the famous collectors, John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, she emerged as a central figure in the American folk music revival, issuing several important books of adaptations (transcriptions and arrangements) and pioneering the use of American folk songs in children's music education. Radicalized by the Depression, she spent much of the ensuing two decades working aggressively for cultural progressivism." Per - Judith Tick, author of Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer's Search for American Music

Happy Birthday!

Song and dance man, songwriter, playwright, and theatrical producer George M. Cohan was born on July 3, 1878, in Providence, Rhode Island.

Oh, I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy,
Yankee Doodle do or die,
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam,
Born on the Fourth of July.

---From Yankee Doodle Dandy by George M. Cohan.

Cohan may have claimed that he was born on the Fourth, but his birth certificate states it was on the Third!

--- Steve
