I thought this might be a good place to relate the news of my mother's death. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on 14th May.

I'm not sure if anyone reading this will have known her or who she was, but she was a great Irish traditional singer with a wealth of songs to go with her outstanding voice. She made a record many years ago now for Sean McCarthy, but beyond that she sung songs from her native Limerick and from all over the country.

These last few years she had been suffering from ill health and had pretty much stopped singing except maybe late at night when the odd verse could be coaxed from her. I knew her of course as my mother, but some of you who'll read this in Ireland or the U.K. might remember her as a singer in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Anyway, God rest her.

Yes, God rest her, Davey. I think I'd be very proud to be the son of a "great Irish traditional singer." There's something magical about the old people who share the old songs.

I don't know you, Davey, but please accept my condolences. It is painful for you to have your mom taken from you, and it's a loss to the world when the 'institutions' around us pass on.

Not sure if you'll remember me David, but I met you a few times on visits to your folks' house in Longford and also in London. I am very sorry to hear of Florrie's passing (as I was of Val's some years ago) and my thoughts are with you. If you're ever in County Cork, be sure to stop in, as I live there now. Florrie's heartfelt love of her music was always inspiring. R.I.P.

Bonnie

Hi David, so sorry to hear about your mother. I am sitting here in Liverpool with some friends from Ballaghadereen and my mother is telling us tales of years ago and the great nights of music she had. Her name is Celia Kilgallon and Florrie and your father Val spent many a great night with my parents. Florrie and Val also spent some time in Thallabawn Co Mayo, my mother's family home.

We were saying what a great singer she was and how attractive she was also! Her singing gave so much pleasure to so many; and we have so many wonderful memories of her.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry I missed this thread in 2005. As one of the old Customs House crowd in Liverpool some 40 odd years ago Davey, I too am sorry to learn of your loss. My condolences. It's been a good while since I saw you.

Hi David, have just come across this. Peter and I were talking about Florrie and Val, and on a whim I 'googled 'her and found this thread. We have very fond memories of both she and your dad in the old Irish Centre. I particularly remember the first time I heard her sing at a comhaltas night. She was wearing a green cape with a gold chain at the neck.Do you remember it? She was very kind to me, and to my sisters, and gave us great encouragement. A long time ago! Not one of us the right side of 55 any more!
Best regards.

I too have only just come across this thread and until now I had no idea that your mother had died. If it's not too late, I'd like to add my name to the list of people sending their condolences.

Keep singing, and gizza call if you're ever in Liverpool.

I too remember Florrie very clearly- I can see her holding the attention of everyone in the room (particularly the men!) at a Fleadh somewhere, with 'She Lived Beside the Anner'. She was always a powerful presence, with her lovely voice and stunning red hair.

I hope Davey still looks in here every so often and will see this thread, so long after he started it.

Unfortunately I've never seen this thread. Seems so long ago now that we used to drop Davey at home after a night out. Florrie was always very welcoming. Her and Val would come and watch us perform. I remember her singing. They were good times.
