It was on the fourth of July, me boys
That we had a noble dam
        Off between the islands there
        As you will understand.
There were brigs and ships and schooners
        Their masters all dandy men
We all dined on board the brig, Traveler
        Joseph Warren in command.

"Come All You Noble Colored Tars"

Jerry Bryant found this song at the Nantucket Historical Society in May of 1998.   It written as some 40 verses in 1822 by a sailor on the all-black whaling schooner Industry.

:-)

More info at The Kendall Whaling Museum Online, Sharon, Massachusetts but they seem to have hidden the reference somewhere

I'd guess it takes longer than most people today want to hear but less than one television program.

I sing "Child Maurice" (#83) as 45 verses but it doesn't take very long. It's actually 46 verses but I usually forget one or another. Those are fast verses, however.

The song was basically the log of the voyage done in verse. No tune given, so Neal Downey fashioned one that fits very nicely.

I don't suppose the whales were bothered what colour folks were chucking spears at them.
say it loud
I'm a white whale an proud!
say it real soon,
cos I've just been harpooned!
say it quick
he got me in the Moby dick!

I am a Yankee Doodle Dandy
A Yankee Doodle do or die
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam
Born on the Fourth of July.

I've always liked this song because July 4 is my birthday. 8-)
