i suppose because she sees a lot of very able musicians who have spent thirty years walking at the pace of the slowest and bitterly resented if they get uppity enough to make a cd.

Ha. weelittledrummer, do you mean when beer was one and tuppence 'apenny a pint and petrol six bob a gallon, the summers were long and we never had to lock our doors ............auctualy I found the people that went to clubs to be the interesting and stimulating part. They didn't all want to make cassetts or LPs when they lacked the experiance, substance, support or confidance of their fellow musicians. Mind you this singer in question, may well have an honors degree in ethnicology, a doctorate in applyed social musicaly engineered studdies and a grant from the Arts Councill for a for ten year studdy into setting up guitar string recycling bins a folk festival sites. But if she can sing?? Why not get out and be heard, drop in a some sessions, festivals and clubs, try doing a bit of walking before the running. The folk music world is full to bursting with CDs made by half ready singers with the gleam of stardom in their eyes.

If this young singer is "an accomplished traditional solo singer" where does she sing? Has she no mates? Does she never go to sessions, clubs or festivals? Seems strange, in my younger days arround clubs any half decent girl singer would have been knee deep in prospective accoumpaniests musical or otherwise.

Met Pete Smith last night (along with his oppo John Buckley). Lovely bloke and superb guitarist (both of them actually). Well worth checking out. He'd definitely add that 'something special' to a track or two for you.

my advice is check all these people out. if you have major record company interest, you are in strong position. at various times in your career, your position to negotiate and ask for what you want goes up and down.


some people never recognise this, and just spend all their lives being snotty and resentful. others recognise too late what they might have achieved.

the only problem with punkfolkrockers plan is that really its only the bitter twisted old farts who can actually play the sort of backings you will want with any verve. Its tricky stuff.

I suppose there are a few breadhead /halfwits in the music world but lets face it - you don't want to marry these guys - just make use of them. and they need to make use of you. Its a symbiotic thing - and you have to be able to handle this - if you always work with second rate and incompetent people just because they don't give you arguments - you won't get far.

When your next album is being produced by Donal Lunny , you will be finished with them. and they will make a living the rest of their lives for having been your original backing band.

in first instance, i'm in agreement the suggestion to contact the head of department of
local university music / music tech faculty.

students can always be easily persuaded to volunteer with enthusiasm for opportunity for 'real world' experience ..

.. also they probably wont carry as much opinionated bitter baggage with them
as older 'wannabes'
who may easily take advantage of inexperienced new singer
to try to dominate the situation and impose their own musical
and mercenary agenda on recording sessions ..

if you go with option of choosing from large pool of good talented hungry uni students..
should also be able to benefit indirectly from experience of tutors
as mediators between the singer and students,
and maybe their direct participation in recordigs as well..

these days even many 6th form college music tech departments
pride themselves on their high standard recording equipment and expertise

..obviously, a mix of compatible students and older experienced positive amateurs/semi pro musicians would be ideal best of all worlds
to produce a high quality marketable CD for this young woman singer to be proud of..

Fairview Studios are among the best in the area, i'm in the libary, so don't have the number to hand, but its in the book, ask for Keith.
He's been at the recording busines for around 40 years, and recently [last year or so?] moved to new purpose built studios, ring him for advice, he's a good bloke , and i'm sure he'll help, or tell you who can.

I've been thinking about your problem. Here is my advice, for what its worth.

Obviously I would volunteer my own services - they are available to you as a guitarist. However I suspect I am somewhat out of sympathy with 'traditional ' music. In my family traditions go right back as far as my parents. I tend to play in standard tuning and major key tunings rather than the fashionable modal tunings.

What I would do in your shoes is phone up a pub in Sheffield called The Red House. Ask what night Patrick Walker has the residency. Patrick and his friends are world class players in the style you want, who frankly aren't going to be picked up unless they are backing what the recording industry hopes is going to be the next Eliza carthy. Go there , make friends with the friendly people there, and hit them with your strongest material and very directly put it to them as a proposition in the way I have outlined.

Take someone with you, The Red House is in a rough area for a young woman to be alone.

Don't lose natural talent by using accompaniment which constrains too much!

Try contacting the Centre for International Music Studies at Newcastle upon Tyne University. They run a course in Traditional music and will have the people there who know what's available in your area.   Good luck with the Cd. Put a post on mudcat and let us know how it goes. It's brilliant to hear of young singers... we hear alot about young musicians, which is good news, but young singers seem few and far between.

The Scarborough Campus of the University of Hull has a recording studio on Filey road ....and they might have a few musicians willing to help out. It was pretty well equipped when I was studying there 4 years ago and they do creative music technology degrees so should be anle to help with space and musicians.

Can someone help me to help someone else? A young female singer based in Scarborough N Yorks, has won some money to produce a CD. She is an accomplished traditional solo singer, but does not play instruments. This will be her first CD and she is would like if possible, a guitarist or multi-instrumentalist to play alongside a couple of tracks. Alhough she has money secured for the recording- she would not be in a position to pay this person as she has no other means of funding. Is this a challenge someone would be willing to take on? Either that or can someone recommend a recording studio in Yorkshire that may provide musicians. If anyone has any ideas or recommendations can they please PM me and I will be hapy to passs these ideas on. Regards Linda Kelly
