Hello People, not been here for a while, hope I'm Forgiven?

Looking for the Lyrics to a song that at some stage was recorded by Billy Connolly and the Dubliners (yes it was done) more likely to be back in Billy's folk singing stage. The jist of the start and chourus goes...

I'm Lying in bed in room 66
Thinking of things that I've done
Like drinking with squaddies
and...................
.........................
These hospital ward is a dreary old place
But The ceilings as much as i see
Could do with a bit of paper and paint
But then again maybe thats me

(Chourus)
Oh sergent is this the exitement you meant
When i put my name down on the line
All your talk of computers, sunshine and Ski's
I'm asking you sergent, where's mine.........

Anyone able to fill the blanks, i think there is about 2 if not 3 or more verses..

Ta Tj

There was a thread on this back in July '98. Sorry I haven't mastered the art of linking threads, in spite of all those recent postings, but going to Forum Search and typing Sergeant in the subject box will bring it up. - Susanne

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M ASKING YOU SERGEANT WHERE'S MINE^^
From: Mick Lowe

Very good Bev...
I had it something like this:-

I'm lying in bed, I'm in room twenty six
Just thinking of things that I've done
Like drinking with squaddies and bullying my boots
And counting the medals I've won

These hospital wards are drab looking joints
Though the ceiling's as much as I see
They could do with a wee touch o' paper or paint
Or then again maybe it's me

Chorus (as per Bev's..) Oh sergeant etc..

^^ I've a brother in Partick wi' long curly hair
When I joined up he said I was daft
He said shooting at strangers just wanna his game
That brother of mine isna soft

But I can put up with most things I've done in my time
I can even put up with the pain
But what do you do with a gun in your hand
When you're facing a hundred odd wains

Chorus repeating the last line twice.

Cheers
MIck

Encouraging message follows : I only have bits of the lyrics in my head, but the song was written and recorded by Billy Connolly in the 70s, and someone else should be well able to help.

As for the question about which army? At the time it was released on Billy Connoly's album "Cop Yer Whack For This", the troubles in Ireland were at it's height. Hence the reference to facing kids only armed with bricks and stones! But I suppose you could pick any fight in the world even today! Look at Palestine. Kids with stones and soldiers with guns.

Well done Andreas! Those are the words! Only one criticism- in Scotland we would rhyme "saft" with daft - and not "soft"! In fact a lot of folks would use it in every day speech! But who's complaining?

It is indeed on the "Cop Yer Whack" tape/vynil LP. I used to have it, in fact if I dug deep enough into the detritus of my life- I may still have it! Good luck anyway!

The original recording of "Sergeant Where's Mine" was on Billy's "Cop Yer Whack For This".. long before the invention of cd's.. Recorded on Polydor ACB 00215. I believe through a reliable source that he has subsequently recorded this with the Dubliners which is something of a paradox, given the nature of the song... but just goes to show music can transcend any religious/political divide... It's a brilliant anti war song..
Chantelle..what exactly are you looking for.. to get the album or just a "taped" version of it.. I'd be more than happy to send you a copy....
Cheers
Mick

Chantelle,

I don't know of Billy Connolly's version, but according to a past thread, the song is available performed by Dubliners, and can be found on their CD from 1992. "30 Years A'Greying". If you want to know more about the song, it has come up twice on the forum. CLICK HERE and you will get the most recent thread. Within that is a link to the first thread.

Good luck with the song!

well, I tell you, it was fast enough :)

O.K, don't think I'm ungrateful, but there are a few more questions that're still bothering me.

I wonder,is there any 'background' story related to this song? I mean, who's lyrics are those, what army is he singing of, etc.

Sorry it took so long, but apart from my work I am supposed to do I had to search it in my big MSWord-Doc of song lyrics and then had to convert to html.
Otherwise I might have been faster...

Here it is,
Andreas

I'M ASKING YOU, SERGEANT, WHERE'S MINE?

I'm lying in bed I'm in room 26
Thinking on things that I've done
Like drinking with squaddies and bulling my boots
And countin' the medals I've won
These hospital wards that old drab lookin' joints
But the ceilings as much as I see
It could do with a wee touch of paper or paint
But then again maybe that's me

Chorus [once after first verse, three times after second verse]

Oh sergeant is this the adventure you meant
When I put my name down on the line
All that talk of computers and sunshine and skis
Oh I'm askin' you sergeant where's mine

I've a brother in Glasgow with long curly hair
When I joined up he said I was daft
He says shootin' strangers just is not his game
That brother of mine is not soft
But I can put up with most things I've done in my time
I can even put up with the pain
But what do you do with a gun in your hand
When you're faced with a hundred odd wains

as performed by
The Dubliners on the 30 Years A-Greying CDs
