The Allies landed on Sicily on July 9, 1943 and invaded the following day. On August 17, the Germans evacuated Messina and the Allies completed their occupation of the island.

Then fareweel ye banks o' Sicily,
Fare ye weel, ye valley an' shaw.
There's nae Jock will mourn the kyles o' ye,
                Puir bliddy swaddies are weary.

The 51st Highland Division left Sicily on 7th November 1943. They were to provide part of the cadre for 21 Army Group in the Normandy landing.
