I already know it was probably sung by Alfred Cruikshank who is listed in the Kilgariff book. He was Grand Master of Chelsea Lodge in 1941. He would have done most of his singing in Music Halls before WWII, and have trod the boards before WWI at a guess.

The aim is to find an author for the song and maybe the words though I have a video of a 100 year old WWI vet singing it - or his version.

There are two possibilities one of which was Welsh with lyrics in Cymraeg, dates 1914 and another unspecified but the asking price to find a dead end is too high. A world-wide sheet music search on the net has produced nothing.

On the suggestion of "the Walrus" I tried the EMI site re the Francis Day & Hunter archive but it seems to tell me little and I have to persever with that but maybe there is a short-cut here.

Tried the BBC forum - what a culture shock. Answers only it seems. Threads are "chosen"

Mr. Red - is this "H-O-M-E spells home"? ca 1917 (is so it was written by John A Glover-Kind). If not, do you have any more info?

Mick

7.33 John A. Glover-Kind
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    d. 1918
I do like to be beside the seaside.
    Title of song (1909)

about all I can find but I have some sites to look at.

The problem is compounded by the word home. even spelling it with separators there are a lot of homepages out there. And a million blackhats. Sites that cloak, report the search word without any visible reference (or actual). Hoping you will buy anything from their site. I can't believe people will bother with idiots like that. Dupe me once can I trust them with money? NEVER.

The music is available at the Bodleian which is where I found the entry. Use this link: OLIS, Press Start, select Both Oxford OLIS and Bodleian Pre-1920 Catalogues, type in H-O-M-E in the Browse For box and press the Submit Search button. Your song is the 6th item returned. Follow the link and it will take you to a short catalogue entry, press the title link there and you will get full information, including the holding address at the Bodleian.

Mick

(that should be 2 pints now!)

I think we spilt one pint jammed in the doorway.

Title H-O-M-E spells home / written and composed by John A. Glover-Kind ; sung by Tom Costello.
Publisher London : Francis, Day & Hunter, c1917.
Notes Song for voice and piano.
First line: Bill was pleas'd as Bill could be.
First line of chorus: H-O-M-E spells home.

I have been to the Music room at the Bodleain but my pass expired years ago. I have to re-apply unless any lyrics come to light any other way.

Farncis Day & Hunter archive is not on line but they wouldn't publish lyrics anyway. BL is not helpful in this context.

Thanx again.

Ah, but I've had that entry since the 11th! (not via H-O-M-E originally, that was just the easiest way to get back to it).

Well you will spot me at a folk festival near you but as rougophiles are not unique it would be wise to see if the red man hands-out flyers for his website cresby.com
