Anyone else trying them.

This link is for those who do not know what a sudoku is:

I find that doing Sudoku while commuting on the London Underground helps take my mind off the prospect of being bombed.... it also helps to pass the time when services are disrupted by security alerts and signal failures!

I do them because the magazine containing my addiction (Pixel puzzles, also called Hanjie) has a few in. ShadyLady was given some to do at school and has become addicted to them.

I've got a book of them that I do on the train coming into work, I'm not really sure what makes some easier than others though.

Why some are easier than others is what puzzles me too. And also, at any given moment, is there only one number you can guess next? I mean, is there a unique path from start to completion, or does it fork?

Is this something like seppuku? If it is, I don't think I'd care for it.

Totally & utterly hooked, can't get enough of them, although I too can't understand why some, although graded the same seem to be impossible while others get done in no time at all.

AOL have one that can be done on line for anyone that uses them, just discovered it today.

We've been sitting up til all hours trying to do some of them.

BTW what's seppuku?

Seppuku is how a samuri commits suicide. He slits his belly open with a knife. Once he's done that a fellow samuri lops off his head (asuming there is a handy samuri around to do this)

LOL @ Rapaire!

These look interesting, but a tad frustrating to begin with...nevertheless, I shall try them! Thanks!

It is deeply humbling to learn, some forty five years after learning to count, that I have not yet mastered the art of counting from one to nine!

I should add that it is even worse on days when Araucaria sets the Grauniad crossword.

I've been buying both the Guardian and the Independent for years so that I could do the cryptic crosswords while commuting (there wasn't room to read broadsheets in the rush hour...). Now that the Independent has Sudoku on the back page, I've been diverted to Sudoku before getting to the crossword.

It took weeks before I could do an easy Sudoku, but then I tried at home. The main problem with doing newspaper versions is the lack of space for writing in the options, so I've finally got round to trying it on computer, which allows different font sizes for possible numbers.

Alanabit - I did the Araucaria crossword today between Harrow and Westminster, and was feeling very chuffed, but then made the mistake of trying to fill in the Independent quick Sudoku too quickly and came unstuck!

I must confess a growing addiction.... and sadly I'm seeing life as one big Sudoku.... that can't go there because that's there.... and that is the only thing that will fit there....like I said... sad!

I tried my first one in the Washington Post Express yesterday - got the middle square filled and then choked - this could be the start of a dangerous addiction...

I subscribe to the New York Times crossword on-line, and feel pleased when I can finish the Sunday one over a single lunch hour, rather than taking two-three lunch hours. Obviously, I'm not in the same class as you British puzzlers - I can't even comprehend the English crosswords, let alone finish them...

Does anyone else get that slightly empty feeling, when you've wasted an hour or two filling one in, check it's right, and then think: "Well, what was the point of that?"

And then try to find another to start!

open mike & leeneia - you're supposed to end up with a grid in which each line across contains the figures 1 to 9, each column up and down contains the figures 1 to 9, and each of those internal squares contains the figures 1 to 9.

On the link I started the thread with there is a guide to doing sudoku.

I cannot seem to get my head around cryptic crosswords so letter and number puzzles are a bit more interesting for me. I also like the letter game that used to appear in the Express, it also appears in the South China Morning Post.

There is only meant to be one solution, and yes sometimes it is hard to see why one is supposedly easy while another is at the other end of the scale.

It is addictive!

Thanks for the explanation. I don't think I should try one. I'm already addicted to Mudcat.
