Hmm, I think I saw an interview in or linked off Chiff & Fipple with her where air whistle is mentioned.

Yup, it's the Otter's Nest track.
I'll play around with my whistle and see what I get trying Jeri's suggestion--I think that might make the sound I'm hearing.

Thanks much!

You didn't say which track you were talking about (it would have helped); presumably you meant The Otters Nest. From the short sound sample I've heard, I'd guess that Jeri is right; though you can get the same sound from all sorts of cheap toy whistles (those bamboo things, for example) if you're reasonably acquainted with the technique.

It's not like an air guitar is it? There's also the trick of blowing over the mouthpiece and fipple instead of through it. Sometimes people practice that way because they can hear the note, but it's quiet. (You also don't get octaves.) I'm just guessing though.

..and please, no insinuations along the lines of

"just pucker up and blow"....(apologies to Lauren Bacall)...

Whistlin' Mudcats--

I was privileged to see 3/5s of Cherish The Ladies (2/5s were delayed in transit by Hurricane Dennis) this past Saturday. Talk about coincidence or divine intervention--Wednesday, I find out that CTL will be performing at a small festival 30 minutes from my house, and Thursday, my Copeland D arrives.

OK, so I'm all geared up for Joanie Madden and inspirational whistling. What a great show! The woman is phenomenal! I have the time of my life watching/listening to her.

So I buy her Song of the Irish Whistle CD (the ONLY choice available in the Band Merchandise tent) and I've been listening to it over and over and over and....you get the idea. On one track, Ms. Madden plays, according to the credits, "air whistle". It's eerie and ethereal--a whisper of a whistle. A google of "air whistle" turns up a bunch of sites selling Federal Cunningham sirens for fire trucks and the like, and I can't believe that's what she's playing, SOOOOOO

what's an "air whistle"?????
