Does anyone know if the song-collecting travel journal of Cecil Sharp was ever published? If so, by who, and is it still available?

Please clarify this question for me. Are you asking for a travel journal, or a published collection of the songs he gathered? In England or in Appalachia?

Oxford published English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, which Amazon says is out of print, but a bookstore in New York (Hacker) has a used copy of the two-volume edition for $125, or thereabouts. (Ouch!) It was later re-printed in a single volume, but I don't find that one listed among the various used-book sites I often visit. You might want to read Sharp's English Folk Song, Some Conclusions, as well. Your local library should be able to get these books for you on inter-library loan. Go for it!

I am asking for a travel journal, not a collection of songs. It records people he met, impressions and descriptions of them, some scrapes he got into while attempting to collect songs, etc.. Any clues of a title/pubisher in the UK?

Ian: You may want to read Maud Karpeles' Cecil Sharp, His Life and Work. As Liam's Brother suggests, you'll find a number of copies listed at various used-book shops if you go to Bookfinder. Maud was the woman who accompanied Cecil Sharp on his Appalachian collecting trips. She would take down the texts while Cecil wrote out the tunes. She describes their work together.

For anyone who's interested, I've discovered that there probably isn't a published journal of Cecil Sharp as such, but his accounts of his meetings and people on his song-collecting travels are included in Maud Karpeles' 'Cecil Sharp - his life and work', available from BOOKFINDER (as above). I've just received mine through the post. Apparently, the collection of songs from the Appalachians also includes such accounts. I'll try to track that down.
