Happy St. Swithin's Day!

His relics were moved to Winchester Cathedral 7/15/971

        St. Swithin's Day if thou dost rain,
        For forty days it will remain;
        St. Swithin's Day if thou be fair,
        For forty days 'twill rain na mair

St. Swithin, Bishop of Winchester, wanted to be buried in the open so God's rain would fall on his grave. To honor him at canonization, the monks decided to move him into the choir on 7/15. But it rained for 40 days & they decided to forget it.

                Per: English Folk-Rhymes, GF Northall, 1892.

We don't do a whole lot of saint's days, of course. We like this one for the old oath "by St. Swithin's purfled chin." (We even looked up what purfling is.) We don't know where & among whom this oath was common.
