If a cat is on a leash make sure they can never jump over something that would hang them up.

Our 1 year old cat Rocky jumps over our 7 foot fence with ease. When he climbs trees he wanders out to branches that could challenge squirrels.

Last night I heard an awful noise. It was like an industrial squeak. After 4 or 5 such blasts I looked to find a full grown white tailed deer in the front yard. Rocky was rushing the deer and retreating over and over.
He held the deer at bay until I turned on the porch light and the deer gave several more squeaky snorts and went across the street.
Rocky likes to be chased and then turns around and chases me. One night he swooded in on me in the dark of night and really scared the nip out of me. He also doesn't mind taking short swims in the pool but I only let when there is virtually no chemicals in the pool since the lick fest after his dip might end up swallowing a lot of water.

I've never approved of 'indoor cats' although I do appreciate that for some areas it's the only way possible and healthier for the cat. If you observe any feline, whether caged, housed, domestic, wild, tiger or moggy, it will always stare intently out of any 'window' and watch the 'food' go past...

He will soon let you know if he feels deprived. Have you thought of trying to train him to a leash? It's been done before.

That brings up a question for y'all.

A month ago I adopted a stately, figurine-handsome 11-year-old coal black cat named 'archy'. (I've thought about renaming him 'Parson'- he reminds me of a parson, kind of starchy, opinionated and jet black, kind of like Ichabod Crane.) His family had to give him up when they discovered their youngest son was allergic to cats. He seems to have adjusted fine. Sleeps with me, is vocal and responsive, runs and plays. One of his habits is running full tilt at his scratching post and then leaping to the platform up top. He's very active and healthy.

archy would like to go outdoors; he's been an indoor/outdoor cat all of his life. He lived next to the forest in his former life. However, I would rather keep him indoors and just let him sun himself at the windows of my third floor apartment and whenever possible enjoy the breezes that come through the screen. The other day I had him with me on the closed-in sun porch- he walked the shelves looking intently outdoors, reminding of nothing so much as a caged panther.

He hasn't been outside in this month- am I being selfish in keeping him in? Will he forget and become content?

It wasn't me saying it, I just quoted it.... I can't even find the source book now....

I would move heaven, earth and 4X4s to get a treed cat down too. I know cats can't read that well and probably haven't all got that book anyway.

Consequently, I keep a careful eye on where Raven the kitten is.... (asleep on the window sill) because he's just discovered how to climb.

Good job, Mr. Red.

Being treed is can be a very serious problem for a cat. I have a friend whose cat was treed for three days. She eventually found sometone with a ladder huge enough to get it down, but the cat suffered kidney damage from being deprived of water for so long.

Meanwhile, listening to its pitiful mews for help was a real strain on the nerves and hearts of everyone in the neighborhood.

Moral: if you have a pet cat, keep it inside.

liz, cats will always attempt to come down however when they land too hard they do occaisionly break their backs or strain their backs with residual paralysis right at the hips. We nursed such a cat back to nearly being able to walk normally again. Its tail however would forever drag.

Cat is a kitten and into every thing. Iy has a gold collar and I am not sure who homes it, but it want to survey it's territory.

Yea not only good for the cat. I did wonders for my self esteem for a few hours. And I do need it right now.

Perhaps they fall from the trees when they lose consciousness? My son found his missing cat under a tree, dead.

Cat skeletons blow out of trees in the autumnal gales, so when the leaves fall, they aren't there.

I'm a hero too. I swung my van to block off a lady who was driving along with a burmese cat crouched on her 4x4. The cat's eyes were OO THIS big!
Then I got out of there before it adopted me.

whilst polishing the caravan I kept hearing a squeek, no brakes on my little "Coupe Tup" so not the 'van. Squinting up the fir tree shows nothing. More squeeks, more squinting, more polishing................

Eventually - having looked in all cars and vans just in case trapped inside, I spotted one paw 20 feet up. Luckily I had a large bag and string to hand and over the neck it went. Talking to the cat all the way up was working. Cat seemed to know I was safety and two tries gets it in the bag. Teeth closed the bag with just a whiff of cat bum. Cat stalked off a bit embarrassed at having such a close inspection of rear end.

The good news is that it keeps returning and is quite affectionate.

Lost phone found, tow bar fitted. It's been a good day.
