General Background.... Martin Browne & Elizabeth Padgett

Martin and Elizabeth joined forces in March 2002 - initially when Martin approached Elizabeth to sing a couple of songs at a singaround - but they have not looked back since.

Although coming from quite different musical backgrounds it did not take long to realise that their respective styles and voices were both compatible and complementary.
Their act is a blend of traditional songs and sensitive contemporary compositions, several of which have been written by Martin.

Martin
Born and raised in Boston, Lincolnshire, Martin's first interest in music was as a choirboy at his local church. (You might not believe it if you saw him now).

He developed an interest in the guitar at the age of sixteen, believing it to possess mystical pulling powers. After playing electric rhythm guitar in a couple of blues groups he forsook performing in public (under orders from his mum) to get on with his "A" levels.

Whilst away at college in Loughborough he was introduced to the intricacies of fingerstyle acoustic folk music when he overheard fellow students in his hall of residence. Won over by the songs of such artists as Peter, Paul & Mary, Gordon Lightfoot, Tim Hardin, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor he set out to practise their various techniques until, after a period of only thirty-five years, and during a period of mid-life crisis, he felt confident enough to inflict himself once more upon an unsuspecting public in July 2001.

Other influences have been Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and, in more recent years, Richard Shindell, David Wilcox, Lucy Kaplansky, Beth Nielsen-Chapman and many others.

Inspired by the array of song-writing talent at Spalding Folk Club he began writing his own songs in September 2001.

If asked who was the most influential of the above the answer would undoubtedly be Gordon Lightfoot.

Elizabeth
hails from Cudworth, a little ex-mining village near Barnsley in South Yorkshire (you might just detect a slight accent).

She started her musical career at the tender age of 7, singing solo children's hymns at Cudworth Methodist Church. By the age of 14 she was singing with her sister Hazel or friend Sandra at various churches in the area, and also putting on concerts for pensioners.

At 17 she was encouraged by her mother to sing in the Working Men's Clubs. However, after accompanying her mother to the local folk club at the 'Fox and Hounds' in Shafton, and, inspired by the passion and enthusiasm for traditional music displayed by the likes of Dave Oldroyd and Ken Hudson, she fell in love with folk music. She has been singing in folk clubs ever since.

At 21 she was encouraged by Derek Elliott to go to BBC Radio Sheffield, where folk programme presenter and performer, John Leonard, recorded and played a couple of her traditional songs.

Her time at Barnsley Folk Club during the late seventies and early eighties fuelled her passion for traditional folk music and she appeared at local venues supporting such acts as Vin Garbutt and The Watersons.

In the late eighties she moved to Norfolk and became a regular at the Norwich folk club at The Denmark Arms (where a young Damien Barber also regularly attended). Here she was given the chance to support Keith Marsden and Cockersdale.

For the last 13 years she has lived in Lincolnshire and she currently organises the guest list and is MC at Spalding folk club.

Her early influences were undoubtedly the local and national folk performers she encountered along the way. Vin Garbutt, Keith Marsden, Isla St Clair. Pat Ryan, Vera Aspey, Derek and Dorothy Elliott and Dave Burland are among those deserving special mention.

Just written it all once but my message just disappeared!! Oh well.. the gist was.. another good night Les. Quite like the self-service style; creating ones own little ambience as it were! Given a couple of new singer names to research which is always good and had a look at Helen's great Casio Privia Stage Keyboard. Very nice... would like one for sure. Anyway been trying to get on this site but computer or site problems most of the day. Anyway, kind regards TT.

Thank you TT.
Yes it was another very good evening with all performers giving us a smashing variety of music. Its still very much a team effort with the performers going on in no particular order and creating the lovely variety of music that I have know become accustomed to hear.
The accoustics are really good and it doean't matter where you sit, you can always hear the performers really well.
Yes that was a nice keyboard of Helen's. It was nice to see Helen and Ian have their baptism :-) They did very well.
Yes I think this bring your own kitchen (oops) sink idea is rather nice, and when people get into it - the candles :-)
Roll on the next one.

Yes I wonder whether a few checked (obviously red In colour!) cloths might just bring a little added extra... well poss/not I'm just always trying for uniformity!!I noticed a nice kitchen area - had you thought about a little complimentary mug of cocoa say around 11ish to encourage us to stay on to the end... not that we needed that you understand!! Ern's all fired up (But then when isn't he!... we've to find a few livelier numbers people can join in with...everybodies problem I think! ) Talk to you soon!!TT

Thought I would post this. A couple who came to the club on Friday for the first time sent me this e-mail.

Hi there tried posting message on message board but was a long time opening so here's is a line to say that we travelled over from Grimsby for the session on 29/07/05 and really had a great time .
Our congratulations for providing such a great evening of music for us to enjoy.
Unfortunately had to go early due to work commitments but fully intend visiting again.
we are mates of Helen and Ian who played that night but found the other artistes to be most excellent and much to our taste.
The quiet listening atmosphere is very strange to our ears as we are usually in a much noisier pub environment for our music, could soon get used to it though.
Will be on holliday for a couple of weeks but will be checking up on the web site for next event as soon a we get home
Thanks very much
Tim & Jen
Grimsby

That says an awful lot and hopefully another couple getting the "Folk" bug.

Don't know if I can post on here but stumbled onto this by mistake....(Helen of Helian Keys and the Casio Previa keyboard!) I hardly dared read what people said when i saw our names mentioned cos I know Ian and i didn't do traditional folk particularly and wasn't sure if people would like our style. My nerves trembling, I was relieved to hear that no one said anything nasty, phew! We had a good time thanks, and are looking forward to coming along again. Thanks for asking us for Sep 9th. We enjoyed listening to the other performers although had to disappear before the end because of Ian's work demands. Glad to see Tim sent you an email because they said they had a good time and feedback is great, particularly if it is positive!

GuestH - You and Ian can also come to Gainsborough Folk Club any time. It's on this Friday, 5th Auugust, at 8.30 pm, and fortnightly after that. It's at the Drovers' Call pub, on the road in from Lincoln (Lea Road). I can guarantee you a warm welcome and, like Market Rasen, we listen to and enjoy pretty much anything. You might have a bit of a squeeze getting the keyboard in, but we could all shuffle up a bit for you! :-)

In case you're wondering, I'm the little fat bald beardy guy who sang about the Elephant Man (amongst other things)! :-)

And sorry for hijacking your thread Les! :-)

(Alias, Helen )Excuse the silly msn nickname! (Too old to be a rock chick! The pf stands for 'pianoforte'!)
Thanks very much for the invite to Gainsborough Folk Club. We would really love to come to the club one night, thank you. We have to fit round Ian's work and demands of both our families so it is sometimes difficult to play as often as we would like! Ian and I also play with a guitarist called Denny, under the name Shoot the Crow and I play in an four-strong all-female group called the Wild Wolds Women, (we are playing at Faldingworth in November.) There are just too few days in the week!
There seem to be so many good places to go to, for live music, around here. It is good to enjoy good live music and pleasant company. We really enjoyed the night at Faldingworth, (well done Les, for all your hard work there,) but my favourite, was hearing you sing Rosemary's Sister. I love the song and you really did it justice.

I will continue to peruse your most excellent web site on a regular basis.
We are away for the next 2 weeks camping in darkest yorkshire, not very far from Helmsley.Would any of you know of a folk venue in that general vicinity?
We have asked around but most of the pubs in that area dont have louges and rooms at the back they have eateries and carveries and other none musical things, it could be a long 2 weeks.

Good advice re searching for local folk clubs because it does work. We are lucky in this area because there seems to be a growing acoustic music scene. For example, the Tap and Spile in Grimsby has acoustic nights and open mics regularly and the crowd there are very welcoming. (Don't worry...the events are on different nights to Market Rasen and Gainsborough Folk Clubs!) There are also sessions that take place at Barrow on Tuesdays and Goxhill (Cara often go there) on Wednesdays.
Tim the Twangler...are you going to mention GMFG?
It would be good to have a central diary somewhere which was updated each week for people to see what is on locally. Folktalk and Fizgig are useful, I think.

Hi guys I joined,I think, thank you for the invitation Les, BTW Miss Highwater (hellen Highwater, you see?suit yourself then)
is most kind and generous about my guitar strangling and shouting only because she needs someone to put the new strings on her Guitar.
Cheers Tim

OK, Tim... guess that is why people all sing along in t' pub with your songs when you play them....AND why some have asked you if they can have words and chords so they can play them,too...cos they are such dire songs????? eeeh ...stop pretending to be modest!
BTW ...how do I mark threads so that I can follow just certain ones instead of having to look right through the list of different ones?
Bet it is really obvious to those more technically minded out there....!
