It will be in his posthumous songbook, Picking Sooty Blackberries, which is available from Cockersdale.

A cracker:

ST AUBIN SUR MER
Been Around For Years – Cockersdale Tape
Keith Marsden

Oh, we had to make the beaches from a lousy LCI,
And the landing ramps were swaying like a Portsmouth dockyard drunk.
She pitched us and she heaved us till we had to land or die,
And by the time we made it, half the tank support had sunk.
So a seasick, sodden rabble, we ran blindly everywhere
While the Germans thinned our numbers out at St Aubin Sur Mer.
Aye, the Germans thinned our numbers out at St Aubin Sur Mer.

We had practised, aye, we'd practised at the great invasion plan,
Storming undefended beaches on a friendly Dorset shore,
But when the tanks were grinding through the wounded in the sand,
We knew we weren't on Blighty exercises anymore,
And we grew up very quickly, moving out through street and square,
Shooting first and asking after in St Aubin Sur Mer,
Shooting first and asking after in St Aubin Sur Mer.

We had patriotic heroes. We had make-believe old sweats,
But none had come with nineteen-fourteen innocence for fun.
If we paid the bill again for them, this time they'd not forget,
And there'd be a golden future when the present job was done.
But heroes, sweat or dreamer, the Old Reaper didn't care,
As the Germans swung their scythe through us at St Aubin Sur Mer,
As the Germans swung their scythe through us at St Aubin Sur Mer.

And now I see the glories of the brave new world we've made,
From the slaughter and the sacrifice, the maiming and the pain,
And I see the lying leaders as they posture and parade,
And trample on the dead men's dreams and ride to war again,
So don't tell me I was lucky I came back from over there.
The lucky ones died with their dreams in St Aubin Sur Mer.
The lucky ones died with their dreams in St Aubin Sur Mer.

Thanks. Not sure whether this is a live board, but I'll send my thanks into the ether anyway.

Just been looking at pics of veterans at the 65th anniversary. I could remember the first two verses but not the second, and felt like singing the song.

My village in England is twinned with St. Aubin...

If you can't get a copy of the book - you can buy Cockersdale CD's or individual tracks as MP3's on Amazon

The website may have been taken down as Cockersdale are apparently finishing this year. I seem to remember that the book was unavailable last time I visited the site, a great pity that, I wouldn't be without my copy.

AbeBooks currently list 2 copies, but they are pricey.

P J Music advertises a copy for £9.95 I think the book cost more that that originally, then someone elso wants over £100 for their copy. I'm afraid I wouldn't ever part with mine.

£7.50 was, I believe, the original price. The WH Smith one says '4 weeks delivery' - I bet they'd come back to you saying that it isn't available.

WH Smith, after waiting several months, now admits it is out of stock and they will not be obtaining further copies.
This actually was not a surprise.
I for one will continue to try to obtain a copy.
Cockersdale are appearing at the Beehive Folk Club, Harthill, South Yorkshire on the 5th November 2010, I will be there and hope this great song will be performed.

WH Smith is a pain to order from. I ordered a CD from them and got the "It should be in on Thursday" Thursday came and went and I made enquiries and was told it "wasn't in and we'll reorder it for you". Weeks of this conversation went on and I eventually cancelled the order, went to the local independent record shop, ordered it from there and I had it two days later. I gather that anything ordered from WH Smith goes round their branches to see if it's in stock anywhere. If none of the branches have it then you won't get it because they won't order it especially for you.

Ah, found the link again. Since my last thanks for whoever posted the words (I wasn't the OP) I've lived abroad for the traditional 7 years and now back in that village twinned with St Aubin.

I think the song needs another outing on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, particularly the last verse..

I'm learning this song. But I like to try to fully understand a song before I perform it.
Can anyone help me understand the 3rd verse; I've worked out that an old sweat is a former soldier. What does 'If we paid the bill again for them this time they'd not forget' mean? Presumably 'paid the bill' means die? But who's 'they'? The government?
Thanks.

The way I understand "they'd" is not just the government or the well off, but every body else that was not there, maybe this this is what Keith intended. Val, John or Graham may be able to help.
