If it were my choice, I would tend towards going. Egypt is a wonderful country to visit.

But then I'm a veteran of living in and travelling to various dangerous places and tend to be rather defiant against terrorist threats.

Having said that, I will probably not go on my planned extended teaching trip in India planned for later this year as my wife, who was going to join me this time, "does not feel right about it" and I respect her views.

You're right PG the decision was a combination of his feelings on the matter and our feelings for him.

We didn't tell him we lost 3000 pounds, mostly 'cause I wouldn't have been able to say it without "effen" preceding every other word. :-)

They're NOT going, as of 1:39 two days ago. Briggs just forgot to add his name to "GUEST." So we can quit encouraging them to throw caution to the winds.

I would certainly hope that, even if they don't get a full refund, the tour company or travel agency or whatever can offer them some kind of trade-out, like a discounted trip to an alternate destination.

Reading between the lines, I would guess that this was the 13-year-old's decision, or at least a joint decision in which the kid participated. If so, I'm sure it's the right thing to do ~ why embark on a trip during which you'll be constantly uncomfortable?

I just came back from a vacation in Poland, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. I was a bit apprehensive about traveling through De Gaulle Airport in Paris, but everything worked just fine. Don't think I'd want to go to Egypt just now, though. The security would probably ensure that everything would be OK, but it's likely to be a horrible hassle.

Well I would be worrying about a trip along the Niile. Food poisening or tummy bugs! As for teerorists - I would brave it out just to stick two fingers up to them. A very small gamble, but the pay-out is a bit drastic. But call me mad.

The decision came about mostly when we came to the conclusion that the very best we would get, assuming there were no big problems, is a holiday we wouldn't be able to enjoy.

Oh well, maybe Canada again!

Most German travel agencies offer similar but safer alternatives with no additional costs when you switch.

Yes I have been considering this, going without him is not an option as one of the manin reasons for going was to allow him to see Cairo, the museums and especially the pyramids.

I think, as Little Hawk has said, you have to go by your own gut feelings about this (and not on anyone else's gut feelings). I was faced with a very similar dilemma. I was due to go to New York in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 with a group of people to learn first-hand from an organisation who do street theatre/social work for the kids in the rough areas of New York, with a view to setting up something similar in the UK. The gut feeling of most of our party was to go, and they did, and came back telling of all their good experiences. My gut feeling was not to go - I was concerned about going into an (at that time) unknown quantity, and especially about the possibility of return flights being cancelled, being stranded in New York, leaving my young daughter back in the UK being cared for longer than planned, and all the anxiety that would have entailed for her. I lost my ticket money, but what the heck.

The point I am making is that the gut feelings of the people who went were right for them, and they had no regrets. My gut feeling not to go was right for me, and likewise I have never had any regrets about it. I know I would not have been able to take in all the experiences of the trip. We *did* set up the project over here in the UK, and I was just as much a part of it as those who went over to New York.

In making my decision, these three sayings were prominent in my mind:
"Know thyself."   "To thine own self be true." "If in doubt, don't."
The decision, then, was the "right" one.

Turkey is a beautiful and fascinating country. I would go but not use the dolmuses to travel. It is easy enough to drive around and the best sights are in very unbuilt up areas.

A friend of mine is cogitating that same kind of thing. He's booked to visit Turkey in September. He's excited about it but also apprehensive. As he said, reading the State Department's views on what to do and what not to do, where to go and where to stay away from is a sure paranoia stirrer.
