I anxiously await the Altman/Keillor film. Two great talents---bimbos and extraneous characters notwithstanding.

Does anyone recall Gosward Park---brilliant piece of cinema. As was Nashville and most all the rest with the exception (in my humble opinion) of Ready To Wear

Is Peter Ostrouska in it? He should be.
Those were great shows where Peter was jamming with Jethro and Chet.
Garrison introduced Chet and Jethro as a fellow from Nashville and his brother-in-law, which was true, of course.

Moon Unit!!!   Thank you Guest!

Okay, I apologize - I guess there are some people who have managed to avoid the news and pop culture. Just like there are people who could not name the Vice-President, there are people who have never heard of Lindsay Lohan or other entertainment figures.

I'm sure she is a bit of a prima donna, there are very few actors who do not have a touch of it. I have not heard about her "late night hijinks", I've just heard the story of how her car was hit by a paparazzi trying to get a picture, her father's issues, and her attempt to move into "adult" roles.   While I am not a fan, I give her credit for trying to avoid being typecast and move into new challenges.    I trust Robert Altman and Garrison Keillor and I'm sure they see something that others are missing.

I am really looking forward to this picture!   From what I've heard, and pictures I have seen from the set, it won't be your typical PHC program.   Altman has cast the show in a different light, making the characters real and setting the show in a mythological radio station. It won't be "backstage" at PHC, but a fictional creation the expands on the shows aura.

I have never heard of Lohan, either and I am not out of touch, as far as I know. Judging by her might-as-well-be-topless picture, linked in the article, it seems a stetch to include her in something described as full of "decency." I also loath Maya what's her name from SNL. Will probably still see the film because of PHC, Garrison and the other well-known actors.

Wonder why they didn't offer the Valley girl part to Mudcat's own Ditzee Lee?!

The only time I watched Prairie Home Companion was when I went to a live taping (in Baton Rouge, many years ago). I was not disillusioned at all, but I suspect that the excitement of seeing the show live helped; if I had watched on television instead, I might well have felt like several others here, that I would have preferred never to have seen the program, in order to leave my imagination unhindered.

Lindsey Lohan has been filming on location here in Louisiana recently, and got a lot of press covereage for her late-night hijinks. Rumors were abounding that she had been an intolerable prima donna on the set, when not too hung over to show up at all.

I'm sure it's difficult to have to grow up in public. I'm glad I wasn't being followed around by cameras when I was a teenager.

Ron Olesko admonished me:

Comeon Uncle Dave. Unless you have not watched TV, listened to radio, or picked up a newspaper or magazine in the last few years, it is hard to imagine that you NEVER heard of Lindsay Lohan.

Scout's Honor, Ron, I never heard that name (or saw the face that I googled under the name) in my life before seeing it in connection with this movie.

And I'm in Indianapolis, not in furrin parts.

But, as you came close to guessing, I don't watch TV. Not "seldom watch", but "don't watch". I don't read the newspapers or "popular culture" magazines. I have a TV in my home, and the only one who watches TV on it is my retarded son, Hans. Which seems appropriate, somehow. I do watch DVD and VCR movies on the piece of equipment, but never a movie in which an actress (if that's what she is) by that name appeared.

She is playing a character called Annie Angels in the film. I have to admit, I do not listen every week and do not know the Valley Girl character. I am a bit surprised Keillor would keep that stereotype up. The Valley Girl was a pop-culture phenomenon around 20 years ago. Frank Zappa's daughter had a hit song about it. I'm drawing a blank on her name.

You do make a point McGrath, except she has worked for Disney and most of her films have been released internationally.   She isn't exactly a household word here either, but she has been talked about in the tabloids and the family problems have made headlines as well.

I guess I am more familiar with her since my children are of the age where they have seen her films.

"No one is that far out of the loop."

I suspect most people outside the States are... I think, if you ran a poll over here asking "Who is Lindsay Lohan?" most people would be likely to guess "Doesn't he play tennis or something?"

Keillor has a Valley Girl character on the show now and again.   Accent and all---and I, seriously, think that is a part they could play---as could some really talented people as well.

Bill, Valley Girl went out of fashion about 20 years ago.    It isn't fair to compare Spears and Lohan either.   Just because they are young women they have different careers and talents.

McGrath---so true. I had such trouble with that sentence. Kept looking at it---OK---I love the show, the guy, and Altman--except for one picture. His one on the Fashion Industry.

          That should clear it up.

Ron: perhaps we might tout Britney Spears. Both could be good for Valle Girl parts---now Lady MacBeth---I can see it now:

Damned spot--I paid the damned cleaner and he never got it out---damned spot. And you--Macbeth--yeah you ---what the hell is this Lay on MacDuff business--I am worried about you.

" Keillor and Streep and Jones and Altman"

Think about it. How does Keillor belong in that group?

Look, she may not win any Oscars, but just because she is young and has done some "teen" projects does not mean she has NO talent.   Aside from some strange family problems, I actually think she could develop into a REAL actress that people would not make fun of. Give her a break, she is 19 years old and is not about to be cast as Lady MacBeth or snatch any roles from Meryl Streep.   This is her first role in a REAL motion picture, let's see what she can do with it.

"Keillor never fails not to disappoint"

Thta's about as hard to untangle as Bilbo Baggins with his "I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve".

I think it means Bill likes him...

I'd rather imagine it might be more Radio Romance than Lake Wobegon. Which would be fine with me.

I can't get my head rouind the idea of someone who hates Garrison Keillor. Still, as they say "Only in America"...

David O: Good point---well she can always be the Valley Girl character that Keillor has created---or one of the people who fall in love with the graduate of The School of English Majors..

I once saw a TV airing of PHC and was dissapointed in having my imagination closet opened---happens with all radio programs viewed.

But this film is one I will surely not want to miss---great cast, great idea, and Keillor never fails not to disappoint---nor does Altman---well, one time anyway.

I read that article, and I said, "I recognize and respect almost all these names, but who the hell is Lindsay Lohan? They list here as if she belonged in the company of Keillor and Streep and Jones and Altman, so that people would recognize her name. Never heard of her."

I googled her; got a picture. Can't say as I'm impressed with her looks, but of course I don't know what she may do. Is she a singer? An actress? Or just someone famouse for being famous, like Paris Hilton?

Sounds to me like too much of a good thing. Prairie Home Companion is great on the radio, partly because so much is left to the imagination. But I'll probably go see it, if only out of curiosity. And anything with Lily Tomlin in it can't be all bad.

Yeah, you should see the schmucks in St.Paul acting like slackjawed hillbillies whenever they see Lindsay Lohan. Embarrassing.

I almost want to see it, just because it's pretty rare to see local landmarks in a film, but... I still hate Keillor. Damn, I'm torn.

From today's New York Times on-line--- Garrison Keillor has written and will be in a movie about a radio show like Praire Home Companion. Directed by Robert Altman, the movie is being filmed in St Paul and should be out next year. Here is the link: Lake Wobegon Goes Hollywood (or Is It Vice Versa?), With a Pretty Good Cast. -Linda
