Subject: RE: Lyr Req: King Pharaoh Was Our Lodger From: cnd Date: 17 Aug 16 - 05:03 PM It's not the song Jim Dixon supplied above. I found an online copy of that and it goes like this: MY EGYPTIAN MUMMY (Otto Motzan) Not so many years ago, In a quaint old freakish show, Dwelt two mummies whom I know. They were much in love, Very much in love, Both fresh from the river Nile, They came here in dummy style; From the moment that he saw her Then he said with a smile. CHORUS: My Egyptian mummy from the land of Pyramids, We were sweethearts years and years ago—that's why I know. Though you were turned to stone, I almost hear you moan, I'm in love with you, I'm in love with you, It's plain to see, You're for me, I'm for thee. My Egyptian mummy from the land of Pyramids, Not so many moons from now I hope we'll wed; You're my Turkish Trophy, You're my Turkish Trophy From the Pyramid, From the Pyramid Land. Many many years have passed, Since my dear, I saw you last, But no other has outclassed You're my mummy maid Don't be afraid, It must be ten thousand years, Since I shared your joy and tears; Come let's hurry Free from worry, to the river Nile. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: King Pharoah Was Our Lodger? From: GUEST,Noel Burn Date: 29 Nov 11 - 01:35 PM My Pappy's version was: My Egyptian Mum-Mum-Mum-Mum-Mum Mummy Used to rub my little tum-tum-tum-tum-tummy Underneath the sheltering palms. Oh I loved to fall asleep and wake up in my Mummy's arms Way down there where the camels get the hump You get get your eyes and ears blocked up with sand. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: King Pharoah Was Our Lodger? From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Oct 11 - 01:17 PM The British Library has sheet music described thus: MY EGYPTIAN MUMMY. Words and music by Otto Motzan New York ... London: Jos. W. Stern & Co., ©1913. Unfortunately, the sheet music is not viewable online, and the catalogue entry does not provide any quotes from the lyrics, so I can't confirm it's the right song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: King Pharoah Was Our Lodger? From: GUEST,Richard Date: 29 Sep 11 - 02:46 AM My Aunt Anne taught this to us at family parties in the 1950's. I know a second verse, but have always considered it a touch obscene. Here goes Oh, Oh Oh, Oh my Egyptian Mummy How she used to love to rub my tummy With two saveloys and a yard of tripe I'll be up your way tonight Way down East upon the Nile. Our family came from Mitcham, Surrey and I always thought it was only known in that area. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: King Pharoah Was Our Lodger? From: CapriUni Date: 31 Jul 05 - 02:02 AM My father and uncle also had songs like that: famous within the family, completely unknown to anyone else. When my dad sang one of the songs to someone knowledgable about folk music, this person told my dad that it sounded like it came from a university/fraternity review -- a satirical song written by college students for a theater night... or something. Maybe that's what this song is, too... Just a thought. Sounds like a great song! |

Subject: Lyr Req: King Pharoah Was Our Lodger? From: GUEST,Reckless Date: 24 Jul 05 - 10:02 AM Hello out there, please can anyone help? The family were reminising about family parties of years ago and a song "King Pharoah" that was always sung by my Grandfather and an Uncle. We can remember some of the lyrics but whether they were the right ones who knows they had always had a few drinks by then. King Pharoah was our lodger, He lived in our back yard, Way down east upon the Nile. He used to do our washing, Got the sack for eating soap, Way down East upon the Nile We would love to know all the right lyrics and maybe even trace a recording. With many thanks, Reckless. |
