Can anyone recommend a good festival for us to attend. Our wish list is:

Instrument sessions (particuarly for beginners)
Traditional concerts (instruments & singing)
Easy to get to from Cheshire

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions, this is my first post to mudcat.

I've just posted one - Saltburn Festival - have a look there's a full programme - should suit you down to the ground - have a quick look .
Is the Poynton Festival still running in Cheshire

As far as we know the Poynton festival ran this year at Woodford.

Saltburn looks interesting.

Fylde is only up the road from you - Fleetwood, beginning of september. Concerts and Workshops, sessions and singarounds. PM me if you would like a draft programme.

Hi Mo You missed Chester Festival in May, The Middlewich folk and Boat in june, The Four Fools a few weeks back. However still to come is Ingleton in October and Maghull in Nov.

Visit the folk orbit site for lots of "whats on" festivals and other stuff.

Welcom Mo.
Of course there is Whitby Folk Week.20th-26th Aug. Lots of sessions both official & fringe, lots of concerts, workshops, 600 events in total! The main fest in the north. George Garside runs 2 slow & steady sessions during the week. It's easy to get to (but not close) from Cheshire, as in straight down the M62- A64 Dual carriageway all the way until Malton. Then Pickering & Whitby, a straight run.
Fylde is still to come, that's not far, just Fleetwood.
If you are looking for a session not to far we have one in Southport at the 'Guest House', Union St, on the 3rd Monday eve. See the website Whitby to check details. The Maghull Day of Folk in Nov is a great day out. No instrumental sessions though. (adv tickets essential)

Welcome to Mudcat.
If you can get to Whitby, it has an excellent range of instrument workshops for beginners.
They include whistle, giutar, melodeon, banjo, accordion, scots fiddle. There are also group/harmony singing workshops.

I live in Chester.

Most fests r easy to get to from there.

We're off to Hardraw Gathering in N.Yorks this w/end.

Considering Gainsborough, Lincs in Oct.

Maybe go Bridgnorth inon Aug Bank Hols.

My daughter has just got me connected to the internet ('cos when I'm too old to drive to the shops I'd be too old to learn how to use it).She warned me about sites offering sex & drugs. And already I'm invited to a "sinaround"! Sounds fun.

How about 'Baggeridge Country Park Folk Festival' held on 2nd,3rd & 4th of September. Its a free festival but you might have to pay for parking & camping. There are a variety of performers including those of the traditional kind. Very friendly with chances of getting involved in music / singing session. I go every year and I and performing this year.

Baggeridge by the way is in the Black Country. There is a festival web site, whose address escapes me for the moment but a search on the web will get you there.

Sinarounds aren't as much fun as you'd think. There's far too much making graven images and coveting of asses.

If you don't mind a long M5 bash Sidmouth folk festival runs all next week and has loads of singarounds, sessions and concerts. It's near Exeter in Devon.

Thanks Manitas. I couldn't have gone anyway 'cos on Wed I too busy cuddling my neighbour's husband at Addlington Folk Dance Club. (We do wife swapping as well.

The M5 was what we were hoping to avoid. It took us ages to get home from Bedworth last year. Still it is a good festival, must fill in my form NOW before the special offer runs out.
