Interesting that this should pop up now.

About 20 of us have been meeting to explore activism on various levels, and the consensus at this point is that we'll start with our own community. Juneau, our home, has a number of issues that have not been resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

At the next meeting our premise is that each of us will put on the table, so to speak, our passion. One person's passion, for instance, is AIDS, someone else's is bicycling to reduce parking congestion and to address our petroleum-based lifestyle, another's is to elect someone to the City Assembly who shares our concerns... Our idea is to pick up a few 'do-able' projects to get aboard.

We will be brainstorming ideas. I've gotten to wondering if a blog might be a way to reach more people on a wider level.

I had to set one up account-wise to respond to a friend's post when she started one. I thought that was a bit pushy (I think it was Blogspot). I never posted anything to the one I set up. I spend enough time writing things in other venues, I am not interested in starting up what might be the writing of otherwise great ruminations, only to have them disappear into a black hole.

Blogs are written by people who can't get their voice heard in the 'real world' There is, generally, a good reason for that.

Quite why anyone would wish to read the diatribe of people who have nothing interesting to say, is beyond me

ahem -- I have a livejournal. I don't use it as a soapbox (much) but as a way to share thoughts and happenings with a group of friends -- more like a shared diary/newsletter. I don't expect it to be read by all and sundry, but it's a nice and easy way to stay connected to people I care about.

But I suppose LiveJournals are not "blogs" in the strictest sense of the word. ...

But I enjoy reading several "real" blogs, too. Not all bloggers "have nothing to say" (and how do you know until you try reading some of them?).

For what it's worth, my LiveJournal is here: CapriUni.

Many years ago, an author was asked how to write well, get published..etc...
He answed (paraphrased) "First you need to decide whether you have something you NEED to say, or whether you just want to have written a book."

I haven't decided yet whether I NEED to have a web log. (I do know that I don't like 'newspeak' much, and 'blog' sounds a lot like people who say 'shrooms' for mushrooms.)

You're probably right. It may just be that I'm biased, but it just strikes me that LiveJournals (or LJ's) have a diffeent general vibe about them than Blogspot blogs... more... laid back, conversational, and less soapboxy. But that could be a self-selection thing: The people who find LiveJournal's layout and organization attractive tend to be laid back, more conversational folks.

I know I got my own journal so that it would be easier to carry on online conversations with good friends who had journals, not because I wanted to be a famous online personality, or anything (though I have made new friends from people who read what I've written and like it, which is nice. And I probably wouldn't have met them otherwise).

(Oh, and I'm coming up on my three-year LiveJournal anniversary).

blogs...

...the symptom of a generation of solipsitic fools who like to hear themselves talk -- read their own musings -- SO much that they can't imagine a world that doesn't give a damn what they think.

...the symptom of a generation of "information age" fools who have confused the ability to surf the web with the ability to research a subject. They then add to the cycle by themselves (and their blogs) becoming the "source" for a multitude of other blogger/"researchers" to cite as proof of their ability to be informed on a subject.

"I think that, from now on, before I let any of you record, I am going to ask for a blog of the time you've spent rehearsing your parts. THAT is my new plan!"

"Wow. We gotta get some blogs."

"No, we gotta get a new producer."

"Are you a blogger?"

John--

Solipsistic is a fine word, but you might want to proofread before you hit "enter", since misspelling it undercuts the impression you are seeking to leave.

Ron,

I appreciate good spelling. I appreciate good grammar as well. And when I am reading posts on a forum, I have a great appreciation for those who obviously proof-read their text before submitting. It shows admirable care, fine education, good breeding....you know, all those good things we should all strive for (except the good breeding thing -- not much we can do about that'n).

But, just as I can appreciate those whose posts are carefully drafted, I can't tell you how lame I think it that ANYONE would point out another's typo -- especially as a put-down, a one-upsman dig, a gauge of that person's character. It is the mark of an incredibly small mind, a pathetically petty jerk to do so.

I can't tell you how that breaks my heart. But regarding blogs, you really should learn to live and let live. Some like them, some don't. But of course we wouldn' ever want to put you in the "jerk" category for your intolerance.

Wrong again, John Hardly!!! If you would look at some blogs by going to Google Blog (beta) and typing in a search term related to your interests, you would find a wealth of creative and fascinating personal web sites. Like mine, for instance. I noted it as a GUEST back up at the beginning of this thread.

It is a good way to keep one's friends and family apprised of your doings. ( For such a good looking guy, you sure have a narrow outlook....)

Just a thought for those of you who think you have nothing interesting enough in your life to post to a blog:

It's not the vastness or importance of your life that makes for good reading -- it's how well and how honestly you convey it. I mean, look at Robert Frost. What did he write about? This:

"Was out all day mending a wall with my neighbor,"

and:

"Went for a walk in the woods today -- started wondering about that weedy little trail..."

and:

"Ever notice how some birch trees get bent over in winter ice storms, and stay stuck that way?"

What a solipsist he was! Why should we be interested in how he did his chores?

And Emily Dickenson! Talk about a person who had no life! What business did she have, writing all those poems?

Okay, the sarcasm is now officially over from me. Yes, there are some pretty boring, banal blogs out there... but there are also a few gems. And if a having a blog inspires some people to write about their daily lives on a daily basis, I bet you, dollars to donuts, their writing and storytelling will improve.

Isn't that worthwhile, in and of itself?

The thing about blogs is that there is so much variety (perhaps it reflects the endless variety of humanity itself). Most of them are rather personal and often, but not always, introspective. Of this type I'm afraid I really only read the people I know. But there are a host of real news/journalistic type of team blogs that do provide an alternative to the mainstream media of all political hues (e.g. Adam Smith Institute, Crooked Timber Harry's Place, Lenin's Tomb). There are also serious commentators on a whole manner of subjects such as philosophy, science, art, environment etc., (you can find some of these via Technorati ). There are some that are complete rubbish, but there are also some dedicated to, and succeeding in, showing that the mainstream news comes out with complete rubbish too.

Someone said that blogging is the thinking person's television, I am inclined to agree. But it is not like the television, it is the product of individuals, decentralised, by and large produced not for sale but for the joy of it. Rather like the Mudcat, it is a level playing field for opinions, subject matters and campaigns - a democratisation of the means of media production.

I run a LiveJournal, which is great as a venting tool. I also use it as a kind of semi-private discussion forum for my friends and I.
And honestly, some blogs are worth reading even if you don't know the person. For example:
Bark like a Fish, Damnit!
Other blogs, not so much, though.

Cheers, Seiri.

For those who scoff at blogs, know there is now an annual award for them. The young woman who won the first Blooker also garnered a publishing contract and has already sold over 100,000 books: click here.

I just helped my brother, a classical composer, start one, yesterday: Daily Process.

As a writer, I am thinking of starting one about my already published book, as a marketing tool.

Capri-Uni, good for you!

Yes, hesperis, I do have a blog. http://pineyflatwoodsgirl.blogspot.com

which is where I spend the majority of my internet time...in the blogosphere. There are so many interesting blogs to read, gardening, kayaking, political, crazy ranting, feminist. My blog is mainly a way to chronicle my days for my family to keep in touch. I don't think very many people would want to read it. But I am concentrating on photography anyway, nothing controversial because it is public. I'm going to start a private rant about the topics I am most passionate about, soon. but it won't be easy to identify me, I hope. when I I'm sorry I didn't respond to your question earlier...thanks for asking.
I'm trying to put mp3's on it but my dial up connection makes it too slow to do. guess I'll have to spend some money...

Here.

For those inclined towards just pictures and wanting to skip political commentary, there's these:

here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and
here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and "here

Cheers,

Rapaire, if you had sat still long enough when you were in Juneau we might have been able to connect! It's hard to hit a moving target. Anyway it was nice to talk with you nnd get some information about what you and your group were doing. Sounded like you were having fun.

Next time spend more time here- Sitka is all welll and good- but it ain't Juneau. :)

Blogspot.

I've already abandoned accounts on Diaryland and LiveJournal when I got too many morose weirdos commenting on things, or when people got too cliquish.

I know blogs tend to be a love-or-hate kind of thing. I'm not an obsessive blogger--there just isn't that much going on in my life--and I don't expect people to read (or, if they read, be awestruck by) anything I put up there.

It's not that different from post here, really. It's just another way to find people with common interests.

I also have a blog set up as a sort of mini link library for our church (I don't know enough html to write a real website, and the blog template is much easier for me to manage).

I have not read the whole thread, so maybe I'm out of line-- but in skimming I note that some people seem to make a distinction between a blog (blogosphere) and a discussion board. But in other settings I've seen people treat them as the same medium.

I think they are NOT the same, at all-- but it does seem like some people sort of use Mudcat as their blog.

What do people think about that? Is Mudcat (should it be used as) a blogosphere?

I don't consider this a blog at all. I think of them as quite different.

I do agree that a discussion can be used as a blog of sorts but . . . I still wouldn't say Mudcat is a blog. I can't control what anyone else does with it, though.

I don't think of Mudcat as a Blogosphere, WYSIWIG.
I followed a link to Capri Uni's Blog from this thread & this led to a Whovian site that had somehow slipped under my RADAR.
Completely engrossing as this was I don't think the 'Cat would have the space to accomodate it.
Which is in some ways a pity.
Would you like a jelly baby?

My banjo-playing friend does not blog herself but says that she sometimes likes "being invited to go through people's psychic glove compartments".

blogspot tends to be more political opinion and rants and soapboxes, very journalismistic. (Yes, I just invented that word.)

livejournal seems to be more just keeping in touch with groups of friends by posting about daily life. It's in between forums and blogs, really, but more personal. I like it because I don't have to email 15 people individually when I have news, and they can respond to each other's replies as well which causes a group synergy on some topics like what a good discussion forum will have.

myspace is either people connecting to music or people trying to get popular and get laid.
