From: Jim Dixon

A LITTLE OF BOTH
As recorded by Guy Clark on "Keepers" (1997) and "Americana Master Series: Best of the Sugar Hill Years" (2007)

I like drinkin' whiskey; I like bein' straight.
I like a voodoo spinner, man; I like live bait.
I like a hundred miles an hour; I like Sunday drivin' too.
I like bein' alone with me, an' I like bein' alone with you.

Oh, gimme a bowl o' chili; gimme milk an' toast.
Long as you're dishin' it out, Lord, I'd take a little o' both.

I could do with someone, but I could do without.
Sometimes I feel like dancin'; sometime like sittin' it out.
I like stayin' at home, but I can't he'p goin' to town.
As long as I've got a choice, you know, I can't turn nothin' down.

Ah, gimme that bowl o' chili; gimme milk an' toast.
Long as you're dishin' it out, Lord, I'd take a little o' both.

(Put a little gravy on ev'rything for me.)

Sometimes I like to fly; sometimes I have to crawl.
Sometime I'm cool as ice; sometime I'm climbin' the wall.
Sometimes it's just the money; sometime it's just a game.
Six of one and half a dozen of another is all the same.

Ah, gimme a bowl o' chili; gimme milk an' toast.
As long as you're dishin' it out, Lord, I'd take a little o' both.
Gimme that bowl of chili; gimme milk an' toast.
As long as you're dishin' it out, Lord, I'd take a little o' both.

Break Up to Make Up, Stylistics, 1972

Break up to make up, that's all we do
First you love me then you hate me, that's a game for fools

(Used to perform this song in open G with capo on the 3rd fret. Waltz time. Kinda works as a stripped down solo guitar/vocal thing.)

Art can't now followup his own suggestion, but "Oor Hamlet" (to the tune of The Mason's Apron) is by the Glasgow singer Adam McNaughtan.

very shortly after the "Brexit" referendum in the UK, I rewrote Pat Sky's Separation Blues. His verses stand the test of time better than mine, some of which are already history - but I havent decided if and how to rewrite the EU SEPARATION BLUES
(tune and verses in brackets adapted from original song by Patrick Sky, Separation Blues)

Will we stay or will we go
to buy and sell via the WTO?
Maybe we can join the EFTA,
stay in the single market but without much say
You know we've got, got the indecision blues.

Farage says "We're British, we do as we please;
You never ever worked", he told the MEPs
That made the Europeans hiss and boo
"You don't like us; hell, we sure don't like you
You can go and get, get the separation blues."

~"It's time," Farage says, "to put Britain first,
Get out from under Europe's thumb.
It's better to leave
than be besieged by the migrant scum"

(they say) "Leave the union, better leave it quick
Leave the Eunion, better leave it quick,
Leave the European Union, leave it quick
If you voted for Brex-it.
It's time to get, get the separation blues."

[See that fly, crawling up the wall (3x)
He don't speak to Mrs Spider at all
Cos you know they've got, got the separation blues]

"We're better off out," said Johnson to Gove
But when Leave won the vote, Mike gave Boris the shove.
We thought they were the best of friends
But Boris hesitated and that was the end
And now they've got, got the separation blues.

~ Which only goes to show, since it all began
The referendum was a power game
Win or lose, whatever you chose
Politicians act the same.

Gove says "Leave the competition, leave it quick
Leave the party race, better leave it quick,
You can leave the party, leave it quick
If you're lukewarm about Brex-it.
It's time to go and the separation blues."

[The last words that poor John the Baptist said (2x)
Last words John the Baptist said, before he went and lost the head was
This gives me. gives me the separation blues]

~In case you need reminding the decision isnt binding
but it's clear its time for change
We need negotiation not recrimination
whether we leave or remain

Labour and Tory are in a terrible fix
Since the vote in favour of Brexit
Jostling for position, every woman and man
They need to get together and sort out a plan
Cos everybody's got, got the separation blues

Should we stay, or should we go?
Don't ask me, cos I really don't know
Got to get our heads together, or before you know
The UKIP will be running the show – and that gives me,
Gives me the EU separation blues.

Thanks for the entertaining site. I found it while looking for the correct lyrics to "Undecided" (by Sid Robin + Charlie Shavers [1938]), which come to mind whenever I hear "The Donald" Trump speak...
Your site is a much nicer diversion. Takes me back to happier times, I think.
Or does it? Is my aged memory fooling me?
Nah...

There are many versions of "Blow Away the Morning Dew", including variants of the last line. IMO, however, the best of the lot is
"If you will not while you may, you shall not when you will".
The nice contrast between "will" & "shall", combined with that between "while" & "when", is a triumph of good old-fashioned Modern English.

Subject: Lyr Add: EMILY + AMELIA (The Tiger)
From: GUEST,Tony
Date: 22 Aug 12 - 02:23 PM

Two calypsos by The Tiger, with the woman being the indecisive one:

Emily (1935)

Listen, attentively, about myself and Emily.
Listen, attentively, about myself and Emily.
I met that sweet child in Port-of-Spain. She took my address. I did the same.
We lived for three years in luxury, and then join in matrimony.

The first night that I met with her, friends, I were going to theater.
They were showing Eddie Dowling in Blaze of Glory, so we began romantically.
I courted romance with all my might, when I saw her pretty carpet and electric light;
Mosquito nets right around her bed, pillows marked "good night" to rest my head.

For the wedding celebration I made invitation, and to her friends distributed.
Johnny Go-Go, Miss Tosh-Tosh Mama, Buddha-Kid and Madame Cleo.
They all accepted it eagerly, and promised to attend it most faithfully,
And then they congratulated me, upon the move I made to matrimony.

I bought two cask of rum, split peas and rice, and said the guest must be treated nice.
Five cattle, three sheep, two goat, a bag of flour for accra and float.
The father said, "Friends, we are gathered all here. If anyone object, let them now draw near."
Then he said, "I pronounce you man and wife, to live in love and peace for the rest of your life."

But that very night they began to fight, and broke the chairs and wares, left and right.
I then whispered and said to Emily "This is highly indecency."
She said, "The guest they all are my friend, and if you interfere, this will be the end."
And then she threw back the ring at me, and she said we finish with matrimony.

Amelia (1938)

Amelia, dou-dou, to be honest and true, me life and confidence placed in you. I say,
Amelia, dou-dou, to be honest and true, me life and confidence placed in you.
Me father was a man belong to high rank. He die and leave money in the royal bank.
He leave a cow, a goat, and a male donkey, and that is why I want to join in matrimony.

I mean to tell you the truth, how I met with Amelia is when I landed from America.
I told her "Darling, I love you, honest and true, and anything for you I would do."
She said to meet her that night in the square, by th'electric clock. I'd meet her anywhere.
So we agreed to meet quite positively, you could believe me, by La Peyrouse cemet'ry.

Well, I took Battoo bus at seven thirty, on my way to the cemetery. And then
I told her my aim it was matrimony, and mine heart does rule me body.
She look at me and laugh and said, "You too small, and furthermore singin' ain't no work at all."
She wanted a doctor or a barrister, a chief engineer, or an overseer.

So I told her from the cow you can get nice milk, with the money buy satin and silk.
It is a decent size for anyone to lead, and plant provision on which we can feed;
build a nice home in the month of June, and on the island we'll spend our nice honeymoon.
We won't have to pay not a cent for rent. We'll be just as the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

But I really believe she made a terrible mistake. She thought I had cotton estate.
She began demanding ten bolt of silk, and to supply Port-of-Spain with milk.
But the cow died on her suddenly. I mean, the donkey was no good entirely.
And not until later did she realize one of the goat leg was paralyze.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT IF LOVE CAME TOO SOON
From: GUEST,Tony

Alastair Moock's WHAT IF LOVE CAME TOO SOON
Lyrics & Music by A. Moock ©1997 Moockshake Music, ASCAP
(audio sample at bottom of http://www.nimbitmusic.com/alastairmoock)

What if love came too soon
It just walked right in the room
And it wasn't even noon
What if love came too soon

What if love came too soon
Made you faint and start to swoon
Left you howling at the moon
What if love came too soon

What if you just weren't ready
And marriage thoughts just made you sweaty
Left you clinging to your teddy
What if you just weren't ready

What if you just weren't sure
So you headed for the door
But life without her just her more
Than life together hurt before

What if love came too soon
It could happen to you
But you wouldn't want it to
'Cuz the pain would destroy you

What if love came too soon
It just walked right in the room
Made you float like a balloon
What if love came too soon

What if love came too soon
Drained the soul out of your tune
Left you singing like Pat Boone
What if love came too soon

It could happen to you
Like it happened to me
And you'd wish you never knew
Just how painful life could be

It's better to have love
Than to have loved and lost
'Cuz it isn't worth the pain
And it isn't worth the cost

But if love comes to you
And you don't know what to do
'Cuz it feels like it's too soon
Man, I know that feeling too

Oor Hamlet - see Art Thieme's entry of 2005! - was written by Adam McNaughtan.

Hamlet, Hamlet loved his mammy
Hamlet, Hamlet, actin' barmy
Hamlet, Hamlet, hesitatin'
Wonders if the ghost's a cheat
An' that is why he's waitin'

I learnt this at a song sharing workshop with my choir - it was written by Joanne Hammill. It's a round which works best with four parts

Should I, should I not?
The moment of decision is upon me
I just don't know
I can't decide
Maybe I should
on the other hand
I could be making
A terrible mistake
But if I don't act it could be worse
Cause thats like making a choice without choosing
Which is really dumb, so should I?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE WEAKNESS IN ME (Joan Armatrading)
From: Crowhugger
Date: 24 Jan 11 - 03:15 PM

Here's a more sad and serious love song of indecision:
Joan Armatrading's "THE WEAKNESS IN ME"

I'm not the sort of person who falls in and quickly out of love
But to you, I give my affection, right from the start.
I have a lover who loves me - how could I break such a heart?
Yet still you get my attention.

Why do you come here, when you know I've got troubles enough?
Why do you call me, when you know I can't answer the phone?
And make me lie when I don't want to,
And make someone else some kind of an unknowing fool?
Make me stay when I should not?
If you're so strong then resolve the weakness in me.
Why do you come here, and pretend to be just passing by?
I need to see you - I need to hold you - tightly.

Feeling guilty,
And I'm worried, and I'm waking from a tormented sleep
'Cause this old love, you know it has me bound,
But this new love cuts so deep.
If I choose now, I'm bound to lose out;
One of you is gonna have to fall...
I need you, baby.

From: Bert

Cliff Richard sang this way back in the Sixtieas I think.

You tell me that you love me baby, then you say you don't
You tell me that you'll come on over, then you say you won't
You love me like a hurricane, then you start to freeze
I'll give it to you straight right now, please don't tease

You come right out and tell me, you're out with someone new
You play it oh so doggon cool, I don't know what to do
You never seem to answer me, you just don't here my pleas
I'll give it to you one more time, please don't tease

Oh please don't tease me, you know it hurts so much
Come on and squeeze me, you know I need your tender touch

But you tell me that you love me baby, then you say you don't
You tell me that you'll come on over, then you say you won't
You love me like a hurricane, then you start to freeze
I'll give it to you straight right now, please don't tease

The ultimate indecision treatice is very possibly "OUR HAMLET" ---a wonderful retelling of Hamlet. Hamlet is the major procrastinator in all of English lit.

I know several people have recorded it, but right now I can't recall specifically who that was.

From the tradition (and the DT):

William and Nancy

I courted lovely Nancy till her favours I won,
Straight after some other away I did run.
It was the height of my practice and the greatest of woe.
I lost lovely Nancy by courting too slow.

From a large family of "courting too slow" songs on both sides of the pond.

The sentence structure in my last post is a demonstration of my confusion.

When I wrote "there's so many songs that were posted that I didn't know about before which are awfully good" I didn't mean that it was awfully good that I didn't know many of the songs that were posted [in this thread].

I meant that many of the songs are awfully good...

At least that's what I think I meant.

It beats the heck out of me how something can be both awful and good.

Isn't that an oxymoron [which is probably the wrong way to spell that word. Or is it? Who knows? I'm not gonna waste energy on it, cause I have other things to waste my energy on-if I could only decide which comes first the chicken or the egg.

[That remark is suppose to convey some heavy duty esoteric meaning. I'm not sure about what-but I thought it sounded good so what the heck!]

Leadfingers,

"First you say you do and then you don't.
Then you say you will and then you won't
You're undecided now, so what are you gonna do?"

-snip-

That song has my vote as the best song about being undecided.
But then again, there's so many songs that were posted that I didn't know about before which are awfully good-if "good" can be "awfully". You know what I mean. Don't you?

On second thought, I can't decide which song I like the best.

Maybe I do
And maybe I don't
Maybe I will
And maybe I won't
Never the less
I'm in love with you.

Subject: Lyr Add: DID YOU EVER HAVE THE FEELING
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 28 Jul 05 - 04:09 PM

DID YOU EVER HAVE THE FEELING
Jimmy Durante (re-used in the film "My Stepmother Is An Alien")

Did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay?
Start to go
Change your mind
Start to go again but change your mind again...

Oh, did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go,
But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay?
Do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do!
I go!
I stay!
Hot diggidy dog, yeah!

Subject: Lyr Add: HELLO I MUST BE GOING (from Groucho Marx)
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 28 Jul 05 - 03:56 PM

HELLO I MUST BE GOING
Grouch Marx (in "Animal Crackers")

(Voice 1, Groucho)
Hello, I must be going.
I cannot stay, I came to say
I must be going.
I'm glad I came, but just the same,
I must be going.

(Voice 2, Margaret Dumont)
For my sake you must stay.
For if you go away,
You'll spoil this party
I am throwing.

(Voice 1)
I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
But I am telling you,
I must be going.

Nigel

"I thought it was about indecision, but now I'm not so sure"

JennyO, I don't know if you wrote this line on purpose with a witty intention, but it certainly fits into the spirit of a thread on indecisiveness!

I love it!!

Or I think I do.

Yes.

No.

Maybe so.

Definitely.

For sure with no if, ands, buts, or doubts.

LOL!!

Subject: Lyr Add: HELLO GOODBYE (from The Beatles)
From: JennyO
Date: 28 Jul 05 - 10:01 AM

I thought of a song to post here hours ago, but the Cat was down. I thought it was about indecision, but now I'm not so sure - especially when I found a bit of extra information about it on this site http://www.iamthebeatles.com/article1165.html Not sure how accurate the information is - I didn't think their version of the lyrics was very accurate so I got them from another site. Anyway, the song certainly is full of contradictions. I'm speaking of the Beatles song, "Hello Goodbye", written by Paul McCartney. I'll post the information first, then the song. See what you think.

Paul's friend, Alistair Taylor who was visiting McCartney, asked Paul one day how he wrote his many songs, and how he came up with his ideas. Paul took him into his dining room to give him a demonstration of his hand-carved harmonium. As an experiment, Paul asked Taylor to shout out the opposite of whatever he sang, such as black and white, yes and no, hello and goodbye, etc. From this, the song was born. Lennon hated the song, and viewed it as an inconsequential song of McCartney's, saying it was "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions." What further infuriated Lennon was that his "I Am The Walrus," was issued as the B-side to McCartney's A-side "Hello Goodbye".

Hello Goodbye
Writer, lead vocal: Paul McCartney

You say yes, I say no.
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello.

I say high, you say low.
You say why and I say I don't know, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
(Hello goodbye hello goodbye) hello hello
(Hello goodbye) I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
(Hello goodbye hello goodbye) hello hello
(Hello goodbye) I don't know why you say goodbye
(Hello goodbye) I say goodbye.

Why why why why why why do you say goodbye goodbye, oh no?

You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello.

You say yes (I say yes) I say no (But I may mean no).
You say stop (I can stay) and I say go go go (Till it's time to go oh), oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say goodbye
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello hello.

Hela heba helloa (Cha cha), hela...
