Okay, historical fiction author here doing some research. How many of those many 'bridge' songs you listed date from the early 1800s? Definintely before 1880, preferably before 1850. I'm specifically looking for a song, not necessarily with 'bridge' in the title but having to do with a bridge, and it would be great if it was in French or of French origin. New Orleans origin/Cajun French would do too. Any suggestions?

Is there something called Mabou Bridge? Cape Breton has a French population in part. mg

The first time I went to Cape Breton, I made a point of going and seeing Marion Bridge - I love the song so much. Turns it's just an ordinary concrete bridge. Nobody offered me homebrew either.

But the people are indeed kind, I'll give them that.

Dan

Hartlake Bridge: about a real incident in which 34(?) traveller hop-pickers were drowned in Kent, UK, when a bridge was swept away. It comes from the singing of travellers and is sung a lot by Will Duke and Dan Quinn.

Anything from Newcastle with 'High Level' in the title refers to the High Level Bridge.

Just came across this thread...will have to seek out that Paxton one mentioned way upthread ("I'm the Man That Built the Bridges"). This sounds like a song I should learn!

James Brown always took it to the bridge.
JB 'Shall I take it to the bridge?'
Band 'Yeah -- take it to the bridge!'
JB again 'Shall I take it to the bridge?'
Band again 'Take it to the bridge!'
Eventually: duh, duh, duh, duuuh - #'Get on up' etc

hey, mud cat, are you a writer, by any chance? I have a true story line I am developing, and the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" figures into it, but I am leery of using this due to permission, costs, etc. Not sure what to do here. Thx!
