Ah, but think of the loss to literature and the now fashionable Pirate look if we had only "Short John Silver" as a role model. Imagine a peg-leg midget striking terror into the hearts of his crew!
Mind you, Napoleon was short, Adolf Hitler was short............

Ah but I am working on the basis you may have a beard? I don't give jobs to people with beards. After all, I'd never employ myself.........

I'll take you on regarding the under privilege stakes. We can cut the early stages out by getting as far as eating cold gravel if you like and go from there.

When I were a lad. We couldn't afford things people today take for granted. Laxatives? Pure luxury. Many's the night my Dad used to sit me on the bucket and tell me ghost stories.

Musket! You could have just given to me instead. I am shorter, rounder, balder, more under-privileged and can lay it on thick in either Lancy, Manc or Tyke :-)

Dunno about stateside, but my youngest is 6'7" and although 28 years old, hasn't really started earning yet...   Granted, he has dived head first into academia, but his PhD stipend is less than you could make stacking the inevitable shelves.

The idea that tall people earn more is a bit of a fallacy. Same as fat people earning less, or your background goes against you. I was on the appointing panel recently for a chief executive of a large public sector organisation with over half a billion pounds to be responsible for. He is rather short, rather round, bald and has a northern accent. His background is about as privileged as mine. Funnily enough, he got it on merit, same as most senior posts.

All excuses really. Getting on, whatever that means, is a combination of wanting to, luck and maximising your personal attributes. The luck is a big factor. There is an industry based on psychoanalysis in the career game, and it is all balls. Carl Jung? Busted flush. I see as much in psychometric reports as some see in horoscopes. They perpetuate the myth that the dice are loaded against you, not reality.

Has anyone noticed, tall blokes seem to prefer tiny girls? Or is it just that short blokes prefer tall girls? Makes you want to spit. At 5'91/2" tall, I always seemed to snag the 5'5 fellas, but my 5'3 mate would be whisked off by a six-footer. The man I eventually married (bless'im) is 5'10 .. And I always wanted someone to look up to. So no high heels for me. Our daughter is a gorgeous 5'8 who wears high heels so towers over both of us!
Yes tall people do pay a premium on everything. Have to have bigger horses, which cost more to feed..

A man was arrested for murder fairly recently who is 7ft 3ins. And believe it or not, his name is Gary Stretch! I should imagine the police had little difficulty spotting him on the street. Imagine the identity parade! Did they stand the other people in the line-up on boxes or what??

Aye, back when you could stand at matches, children were lifted down to the front to stand behind the net at the kop end at Hillsborough. I used to stand behind either of the Springett brothers who graced the net.

I have the best of both worlds. Being 6' 3" and still craning my neck to look up to my two sons......

My husband was 5ft 7ins when he arrived from Africa, aged 40. He had bandy legs and was emaciated from inadequate food all his life. But during the first 2 yrs here in UK he actually grew 3 inches in height. I used to look him practically straight in the eye; now years later I have to bend my neck back to look up at him. My sis (the doc) says normally people don't grow any more after the age of about 20, but in his case, his bones have absorbed lots of calcium and his muscles have improved. So his vertebrae hold his back upright at last and his long bones have actually become longer.
Regarding spectators not seeing around tall people. I used to watch the rugby at Murrayfield. Many of the spectators used to bring cans and cans of McEwans (no ban in those days!) Very handy, as after drinking the contents, they could wee in them and hurl them at the opposing fans. But also, they used to put two empty ones down and stand on them like mini-stilts. This gave them a much better view of the game.

It isn't the fault of the people, it is the organizers of the event that are at fault, they should let the children sit in the front.

I hear ya, Fibula. I thought I was tall at 5'9 until I met the man whom I eventually married. He is 6'9. Hanging around with his family (all tall) was a real paradigm shift for me!

Now our daughters are both over 6' tall, and thankfully they love it, carrying themselves like queens, enjoying heels, etc.

Actually, Tall people are charged a premium on everything.

Discount clothing don't fit. Need tailored trousers and shirts.

Mini car, economy cars, compact cars - can't get into them, Need large cars. And larger cars cost more to rent and use more fuel.

Need more food just to survive.

Can't get clothing anywhere, need to travel a lot to find not just fitting clothing but also stylish clothing.

To fit the bigger bed, need a larger room. To fit the larger clothes, need larger wardrobes, and a larger room.

Economy class in airplanes is extremely unhealthy, with people trying to crush my kneecaps when they throw themselves into their backrest.
Seats with acceptable (not even comfortable yet) legroom cost more.

Furniture is only designed for smaller people. On ordinary tables legs don't fit under, ordinary chairs are too short and too low.
Result: joint problems, back problems, medical problems, sick leave.

Theatres and concert halls have very cramped seating. Extremely uncomfortable.

Standing up in trains and buses always bends the neck.
Sitting down not possible as seat distance too short. Short people then insisting to sit beside me and then complaining that my leg is in the way.

You have problems with tall people? GROW UP!

Extra tall guys are a pain, eh? They think they are better just because they are taller, and they think they are built larger too. Know what I'm sayin'? Well, it ain't true. Some tall guys are really tiney, eh? Ask the girls at the Iron Horse and they will tell you this is true.

Tall girls are much better cos they have really long legs, and that is good in my book.

hey I still feel kinda sorry for tall people. All those disgusting dust bunnies that hide out on top of the frig and the cupboards etc that we short(er) people are blissfully unaware of? Well there they are, right before their eyes, all the time.   Must be a real bummer. (Especially for tall women).

Tall people can be real infuriating though. One afternoon last summer, a friend who's about my height (5'6") helped me build a privacy fence out back. We were so proud of our work, looked just great, blocked the view from the pool next door just perfectly we thought - till a buddy of mine who's about 6'5" walked in the yard, that is. He just stood there laughing at it. We couldn't figure out why, till he walked over and hung his long bearded chin over the top rail.

AAARRRRGGHHHHHHHHHH

ANd I must say, at 5'6" I don't feel very tall - till I'm standing in a crowd of Japanese (or other Asian) folk, that is. Then I feel kinda like a giraffe or something ....

I dunno garg... my fella's tall and skinny, and the amount of fabric in his clothes is probably the same as someone shorter and fatter, although it's easier modifying clothes for shorter people. I haven't tried tacking an extra 8 inches of fabric on to a trouser leg yet though, so don't quote me on it.

TAll people (6'2") should be charged a premeum on all items:

I propose the all people over 6 foot be granted a yearly Neatherlands\'s premium of 1,000. They are the true handicapped.

Their autos are bigger and burn more fuel

The bodies are bigger and they require more clothes

The legs are longer and they require bigger cars.

All tables, chairs, portions, and wash-loads are bigger

Therefore all be it resolved at all men or 6'2 and all women 5'11'' or about should be cranted an auto rescend tax credit to allow them to purchase autos within their means.

Perhaps, auto-camp-combos older than 20 years could came FREE?

Sincerely, Gargoyle

In the song Kelly the Boy from Killane, the lines "Seven feet was his height/ with some inches to spare" are accurate. John Kelly, the son of a prosperous farmer, was well over seven feet tall, and apparently a fine-looking man.

When the Rising in which he'd taken part failed, and its members were being pursued and hanged from the nearest trees by the English yeomanry, Kelly was too tall to hang from a tree, so they hanged him from a bridge instead, then played football with his head around the main square of... was it Enniscorthy? Wherever it was, his sister lived on a house abutting the square, and she looked out the curtains to see this grisly game of football with her brother's head.

As far as I remember, the story is somewhere in Jonah Barrington, but you'd have to go through it chapter by chapter to find it.

I've always found a good old ullulation will normally remove those that wish to block my view at gigs (I can be a literal pain in the ear.....). Until they started getting civilised in cinemas (and put the screens higher up) I just used to sit on the seat without folding it down.

I must say that I've only really had a couple of instances where the tall person has been deliberately rude or unhelpful. On the whole they've been willing to swaps seats with their shorter companions, swap seats with me or even just slide down in the seat till I can see. Tall people are generally very helpfull toward me in supermarkets where they stock everything I want on the top shelf and I have returned the favour by finding stuff they can see on the bottom shelves.

gahhh....!!! Sounds like yet another move by the Pygmy nation to segregate tall people to the back of the bus. These imps won't be satisfied til they have all the good seats, and tall people, who are notoriously hard of hearing, will be relegated to the rear of every festival, concert, church and town meeting, where they will be seen squinting to see and cocking their poor deaf ears from one side to the other in an effort to hear what's going on.

Meanwhile the pesky little leprechauns will be dancing their jigs and having a grand old time up front and close to the action blowing their penny whistles, getting stock market tips and all the good jobs....

but wait....it has just occurred to me that the best solution to this is to stop thinking "Front and Back" and start thinking "Side to Side"!!! Yaz, all future venues should divide the room in half with a Disney World type gate at the entrance sifting the Vertically Challenged ("Go to the left side of the room, Shortstuff mind yore step.") from the Vertically Accellerated ("Right side of the room, Slim, watch yore head.") My god, I am a genius am I not?? Further, there should be laws carefully crafted to ensure that all this is strictly regulated and the gauge gates checked for calibration every three months or so.

I should think that there ought to be something in the legislation to prevent intermarriage as well so that the added expense for a central, normal sized person section would be eliminated. Tall and Less-Tall Only drinking fountains, urinals etc. are already in place so hey, we're good to go.

Oi! Surgeon Offal. . . speaking as someone who has been swatted, fairly firmly, by some daft old dipstick behind me in an audience who enquired, "WHY ARE YOU SO BIG?" I can only paraphrase the same answer that I gave him . . . "There's not a lot that we can do about it".

If it's a sit down do take a cushion; if you are stood standing, take a small ladder or step stool like they use in shoe shops.

If you adopt the ladder approach then, for health amd safety reasons, you should wear a protective helmet and a harness linked to an overhead pulley with a gravity brake. If the gig is outdoors you should also wear a high visibility reflective jacket ( ironic how many eyes there are in "visibility").
