Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Fibula Mattock Date: 30 Jul 05 - 11:56 AM My boyfriend is 6'6", and the only time it annoys me is when he feels the need to sleep diagonally across the bed because otherwise his shins, ankles and feet would be hanging off the bottom (of the bed, rather than off his bottom - his legs already hang off his bottom). I'm a mere 5'9". I used to feel tall. |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Firecat Date: 29 Jul 05 - 02:33 PM I have to agree it can be annoying if really tall people are in front of you. I'm 5ft 0.5in and I get really edgy. If you are tall, please let the petite people to the front! |

Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: *daylia* Date: 29 Jul 05 - 01:17 PM Well what really amazed me at the time, Little Hawk, was that no matter how many times my parents contacted the school to report those bullies, "boys will be boys" seemed to be the attitude. And no-one ever did anything about it - except me, finally. And as I recall, they never bothered my little bro again. ANd hey, come to think of it, I got mine back again about 7 years later, when I was 18. I ran into the ringleader and a couple of his cronies playing pool in the local sports bar. They didn't recognize me, but believe me I recognized them! (Maybe I'd filled out rather nicely but they hadn't hee hee??) So I stayed and played and stayed and played and stayed and played .... till I'd whipped ALL their hymie little butts and taken ALLLLL their $$$$$, fair and square, right behind the eight-ball! oooooo vengeance can be so sweet, even when it's a long time comin..... (Sorry bout the drift folks. Nostalgia always makes me drifty) |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Sarah the flute Date: 29 Jul 05 - 01:01 PM Being a bit vertically challenged I have a tough time calling for ceilidhs if we don't get a stage (a frequent occurance at weddings) and all I get to see is loads of peoples backs and they all wonder where the noise is coming from. SO to solve this little dilemma I invested a fiver in one of those step up stools this raises me to a height of 6ft 2in and I can now see over most people's heads!!!!! It also raises a few laughs!...and a few rood jokes about stools Sarah |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jul 05 - 12:37 PM Daylia, your youthful adventures never cease to amaze me! |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: GUEST,daylia Date: 29 Jul 05 - 12:33 PM My brother, one year younger than me, was nearly 6 feet tall by the time he was 10 years old. He weighed only about 90 lbs soaking wet. That made him the preferred target of all the shorter, heavier, dumber teenage bullies in the schoolyard. "Manly" as boys that age are just dying to appear, they "swarmed" and beat him up on a regular basis. We'd be walking home from school together, and there they'd be - 6 of them against one of him, and me standing there so angry and frustrated and helpless ... ...till one day, I could take it no more. As the ringleader pummelled my brother to the ground once again, something must have possessed me. I jumped up onto his back and clung on like a cat, pulling out mittfuls of hair, pounding on his face, trying to rip off his ears - man, that's the only time in my life I think I finally got my pound of flesh!! Well ... his little gang of accomplices were so shocked at the sight they all took off like bats out of hell. And when I let him up, so did he. I was pretty shocked ... and impressed! But my brother wasn't, unfortunately. :-( Who wants to be saved by a girl, your sister no less, who's at least a foot shorter than you? But I did get mine a few weeks later. Walking home alone from a piano lesson a few weeks later, that same gang of boys jumped me in the park. Beat me up, tore my clothes, shoved snow down my throat till I passed out. I remember coming to when it was nearly dark, walking home with a splitting headache, nauseous ... and vowing I'd leave the manly hero stuff to the manly heroic men from now on. So there you go, SIr jOhn. Tall people DO get theirs too! So have some sympathy ... |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: MMario Date: 29 Jul 05 - 10:54 AM as they ducked through the door? One of my sisters is 6' 1.5" - she grew 2 inches during her college years. |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Bill D Date: 29 Jul 05 - 10:51 AM I knew a lady once who was 5'11"...she had a daughter who got to 6'1"....as high school graduation approached, the girl was dating a basketball player who was 6'7" or so.......so for the prom, she wore high heels, had her hair done up in a tall bouffant, and they made quite an entrance at the prom! |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Jul 05 - 10:29 AM An acquaintance from a few years back (who married a schoolmate of mine) was tall, and played basketball in college. When he finished college he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. They gave him an "early discharge" when they found that they couldn't keep him in uniforms. He experienced a "growth spurt" after he enlisted, and when I ran into him at a class reunion a few years later he was describing his height as "only 6'17"." He didn't sit down. He folded up. Fortunately he was fairly slim, so you could lean and look around him in most cases. John |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: MMario Date: 29 Jul 05 - 09:36 AM I get accused of being "tall" - though I think people are fooled by my girth. I'm under six foot; and have 5 siblings as tall or taller then I - including two sisters. So I've always felt "short" |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Rapparee Date: 29 Jul 05 - 09:24 AM There was this stable, in Bethlehem, and three wise men came with gifts. The babe was in the manger, Joe and Mary was kneeling by each side. The first wise man walked in and said, "I bring a gift of gold." The second walked in and said, "I bring a gift of frankincense." The third, the tallest, walked in and slammed his head against the top of the door frame. He was dropped to his knees by the impact and exclaimed, "JEEESUS CHRIST!!!" Mary jumped to her feet and yelled at Joseph, "Write that down! It's a better name than Iriving!" So you see, we tall folks have had an impact upon history and religion far greater than might be expected. |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: open mike Date: 29 Jul 05 - 06:06 AM i know a guy who hit his head on the door jam in Thailand...he is over 6 feet tall and the doors there are quite a bit shorter than that. he got a concussion or aneurismn or some such emergency-like situation. not to mention a headache. he should have ducked!! |

Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: GUEST,Blind Boy Grunt Date: 28 Jul 05 - 05:08 PM You're right, Mudguard, as regards proper written English, but not in English folk music. In English folk music a double negation IS a negation, same as in Spanish. "We don't need no tallll people" in a song means "We don't need any tallll people". That's folk music. |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Jul 05 - 05:03 PM I have to secretly agree..... I always get the tall person in front of me.... I've ended up tapping them on the shoulder (if I can reach that far) and asking them to swap places.... at 5'2", I'm more than a foot shorter than Mudguard.. my head is level with his elbow. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: MudGuard Date: 28 Jul 05 - 04:12 PM We don't want no talllll people. I am not sure about the English language, but in German, a double negation is no negation ... ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jul 05 - 04:07 PM "We don't want no talllll people...." Bob Dylan is short. Buffy Sainte-Marie is short. Joan Baez is short. John Kerry is tall. Note the difference. |

Subject: RE: BS: tall people From: Kaleea Date: 27 Jul 05 - 08:37 PM When a gal is 4 feet 11 3/4 inches--that's only 59 3/4 inches in all--at times it is a bit difficult to be sitting behind a tall person &/or people wearing hats. In my mucho younger days, some fellers thought it would be funny to put my chair up on a table so I could see better. I sat in it, & yes, I could see the stage better! But elevator shoes? They'd have to take me up at least one flight. I recall being told once that if I were 1/2 an inch shorter I could be a member of dwarfs international. I don't even know what the organization is about. I'm not green, but I have been told that I'm one of the "wee folk." |
