A friend of mine has gone missing. His name is Thomas. He was travelling NYC to Portland, ME for a visit. No answer on his cell or home phone. I have started contacting people in NY. Hopefully, he is OK. Meantime, prayers and any "information" the more psychic among you can offer will be appreciated. I am more than a little worried. It is not like him not to call.

Sinsull,   your request is not at all strange! The Mudcat is many things, and that includes a place for friends to get support from each other--be it prayer or guffahs.
    Keep your inner eyes and ears open at this time, and your thoughts in a positive belief that the greater good for Thomas prevails. We experience many things is this path on earth as a human, and all of these things teach us the lessons which we need--including Thomas. He could very well be "Thommudcattin' around" and too caught up in the fun to worry about his buds or charging his cell phone. When I'm jammin' too funly & raucously to hear my cell, my friends are convinced something is up--au contraire. Meanwhile, keep yourself busy and your mind as occupied as possible. Good thoughts from here too. I remember waiting in a very inadaquate tent, in the rain, for my boyfriend of the time, and thinking, either he's been in an accident and he's dead, or he's spending the night at a motel, and he's going to die. He was fine. I just missed him when he pulled in. We found each other the next morning.

I haven't heard from him or his friend who went to check on him. But the phone did ring last night with what seemed a collect call (now blocked - a whole other story). I will call agin this morning. Funny, but I too feel as if he is alright.

I contacted the police in NY this morning. Legally they can't go into his apartment unless there is an emergency. I asked if they were going to wait until he smelled bad and annoyed the neighbors. SIGH! Then I called a relative who serves on the State Police force. Now all I can do is wait. I hate waiting.

If he was to be travelling by automobile, the Highway Patrol - State Police - Turnpike Patrol etc. who patrol the freeways may be willing to take a "watch for and check welfare" if you have some description of the vehicle, particularly if you can tell them something "distinctive" about it. A tag number is helpful, but not always necessary. (His lawyer might be able to get one for you?) An expected route would help.

The "highway guys" are generally separate agencies, and local police won't normally pass anything on to them, so you'd have to call them yourself. My past experience has been that they're a lot more helpful - if they can be - than the locals.

OK. I am now very worried.

SINSULL - I still have a few relatives on the NYPD and I'm not afraid to call them. One Cousin is a Detective in brooklyn (no big help, but he can pehaps explain what buzzwords need to be spoken.)

From memory, I'd suggest that a NYC resident who has not seen him in at least 48 hours, go to the Precint that governs the missing guy's area and demand to file a missing person's report. Technically, the person filing has to be the one who hasn't seen or heard from the person and who has reason to suspect something is not right. This person can state that although the fellow had plans to board a bus - no evidence exists to suggest he ever made it out of NYC. If evidence does exist he got on the bus - then it's not NYPD's problem anymore and you have to then contact BCI Office with the State Troopers.

Sinsull - if you want.. I can have my Dad call you - he's a former NYS Trooper and has pals on other State Police Forces where any bus from NYC to your house would have to go through. Maybe he can help.

It would help if you knew somebody who knew your friends Social Security Number since that could help detectives track his bank records and see if anybody has made any ATM withdrawals on his account.

Also, if this fellow has ANY health concerns that might possibly cause him to fall ill in his APT.. say so. It takes very little to get a Landlord or super to let somebody in, but before it can be done, a Missing Persons Report must be filed.

Also.. My Dad is a HAM radio operator and if he has the dude's address, he can send out a Helath & Wlefare Check to NYC HAM oprators and somebody will go and knock on his doorand ring his Phone. ANY HAM Operator can do this for you.

Just spoke with the editor of a local paper who contacted ABC News. Maybe they can get something in motion. The lawyer is not Thomas' lawyer but a friend. It is not unusal for city dwellers not to leave a key with a neighbor. Our co-op had to break down doors several times to check on elderly tenants with no relatives. No one has a key but Thomas and the building manager. The police wouldn't accept a Missing Person Report from me - out of state.
I have contacted a relative in the NYPD and another on the State Police force.
I hope he has not been lying on his apartment floor since Wednesday. DAMN!

Sinsull, I am so sorry. A very dear friend of mine died from a massive heart attack very suddenly when he was all alone and I didn't find out about it for wo weeks. luckily, he was a Brother in a religious community and was found in the AM by his colleagues. The only cosolation might be that due to the nature of his death, he very likely didn't suffer.

I am so sorry for your loss and that he's gone. Sometimes when we pray for somebody to be found , we don't realize the anser to our prayer might be that they are indeed found, but not alive.

Still, he can now be cared for and put to rest.

I must say, a person would be blessed to have a friend such as yourself.

I'll keep him and you in my prayers still.

One thing that occurs to me is that any one of us could suddenly "leave"...in a variety of possible ways...and people who knew us would be wondering why they couldn't reach us. It's a wrenching shock when one finds out that a friend has died suddenly. I hope you are managing okay, Mary.

His last thoughts were probably happy thoughts of visiting you in Maine -- and I so wish he had been able to so we could have met him.

Thomas died suddenly and very quickly. He was on his way to the bus station to visit me in Maine and I know he was happy and excited about the lobster boil. The doctors were unable to revive him. His organs have gone to those who need them.
It looks as if I will be arranging his burial and may have a service for him in NYC. The best send off would be a church full of people singing. My family has promised to attend. I hope some of you can join us.

Okay, it was crude and crass but so am I and I had to say something to lighten the mood a bit. Thomas sounded like a person I would have enjoyed and he obviously had passion for life. I'm sure he is already missed and will be for many a day. I used to believe that time would heal some things like this but nothing really seems to do it as time makes no difference and the pain doesn't care. All we can do is to fill to overflowing the hole left open in our heart with the memories of great times now past. Maybe that is all our hearts are made up of........wonderful memories of precious friends

Anyway, if he didn't get the tatoo finished you might ask for a refund.

Sins, I don't know you or your history with Thomas, but I'm moved that you cared so much about him. All will be well. The fact that these sort of griefs are never really cured is not a bad thing. Pain you carry in your heart because you did the right thing and cared for a person despite the risk is what makes you who you are in the long run.
