Mazel Tov!

Mary (Stuart), Queen of Scots

weds

Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley

on 7/29/1565.

In one of the more complex soap operas even for Scottish history, Darnley seems to have killed David Riccio, Mary's secretary, for no more reason than Riccio's having an affair with Mary. Darnley, in turn, was offed by Bothwell Feb. 1567 (but not by Mary even though she'd been in something of a huff about Riccio as well as Darnley's bad manners.)   The habit now well established, Mary married Bothwell 5/15/1567 (qv) and got into even worse trouble.

        2. The Queene of France [ie, Mary, Q.S. 1559–60] a letter wrote,
And sealed itt with hart and ringe,
And bade him come Scottland within,
And shee wold marry him and crowne him king.

                "Earl Bothwell," (Child #174, A)
