A clip of the "Electric Folk" TV shows appeared on "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" a couple of years ago, so presumably the tv recordings still exist.

The reason was that it was the only one of the first 3 not to be repeated when the second series was shown in 1975. Most audio recordings come from the 1975 broadcasts.

Guest Chris...The programme is only adistant memory. Interesting to hear that the warwick castle programme is no more. Probably because of my distant memory. May someone from warwick castle recorded it....or not as the case may be!!

I remember them at Bridgnorth Festival, and I would rather forget.

I have specific details about the series that I can dig out if anyone is interested. Audio tapes do exist. Does Compton know more details of the Warwick Castle programme which seems to be the only one not to have survived on audio?

The promoter's quite right, they're still excellent live. I saw them at York's Opera House a few months ago, and was saddened to see it only half full. I mentioned it to a few people afterwards, and the response was the same "If I'd known they were playing I'd have gone"

Any more specific memories of that TV series? Do you think there's a chance the footage will have survived the BBC's scandalous tape-wiping phase?

How quick we forget!? They were quite popular in folk scene circles only a couple of years back---or so it seems to me ----- from here in the future ----------------- where I am now...

Oh God, do I remember this series! The first shows were in the spring of 1974. I remember being round my then-girlfriends house and making her sit through the first one. I thought it was brilliant. She binned me a couple of weeks later. Now, if I'd been into Marvin Gaye....

Yes, I'm "extremely old" and can vertainly remember the series...especially the nonsense that was at Warwick Castle, where I recall Maddy Prior sang flat!!. OK I blame it on monitors, I know she doesn't do it usually.
It was, I recall after the Beeb had dispensed with the Spinners services.

Maybe their lack of a website is linked to their lack of a decent booking agent and record label. Park Records and Park Promotions are dreadful to deal with - not in the nasty sense but simply in the disorganised sense.

Several quality venues and festivals I know of have tried to book Steeleye Span in the last couple of years but John Dagnell and Park never return phone calls or emails or messages.

A great shame because Steeleye are still well worth seeing live.

"Nobody I spoke to seems to remember them"

Why oh why don't Steeleye have a website? I'm sure if their (considerable) fanbase had a place on the web to congregate information like this would be commonplace

I recall taping the serioes by putting the microphone of a very old Grundig reel to reel tape recorder on a stool in front of the telly loudspeaker.
The recorder finally broke beyond repair and the tapes were lost.
Quack!
GtD.

Chris,

My memory ain't that good. However, I located it again. It is from

Bootleg List - Beezle Bug, Switzerland

Google that. When it open, go about 3/4 way down the page Located between Ringo Starr and Steely Dan is that reference. Beyond that, I don't know. I think I posted that because I thought it might help RolyH. However, yer talkin' to a guy who can't recall what he had for breakfast, or if he ate breakfast, so five weeks ago is pretty much ancient history for me.

I first saw Steeleye Span at Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire in the seventies....partaking of a medieval feast at the same time and the sleeve photo for 'Below the salt' was taken at that feast.
I have been to see Steeleye Span many times since and seen the changing face of the group. Their 'presence' is not what it used to be but...still worth seeing of course.
Best wishes, Mike.

Just back from seeing Steeleye Span play a good outdoor set at Kentwell Hall in Suffolk, and it brought back memories of a series of programs on BBC2 in the early seventies which featured them playing at a different stately home each week.

Nobody I spoke to seems to remember them. Does anybody else? or is it a figment of my ageing memory.
